Interesting. I think Only Children is brilliant (Patterson said it’s one of the best things Jason has written). Patterson also said the new album and Southeastern are by far his two favorite Isbell albums.Zip City wrote: ↑Sat Jun 17, 2023 8:12 amInteresting. Weathervanes may be my favorite record in a few years.
Re: What's Everyone Listening to?
I have listened about a half dozen times. I think it's very good but I really don't put it in the same league as Southeastern. I'd say at this point it's probably my favorite since Something More Than Free. At this point probably my favorite album of the year but I also don't think it's been a particularly great year for music.

Re: What's Everyone Listening to?
Re Weathervanes, I'm with Zip on this one. If you've been paying attention to his last few records, this one isn't much of a departure. It's really pretty similar as to tempo, guitar work, lyrical themes, etc. Love the addition of Mickey Raphael on harp.

Re: What's Everyone Listening to?
The couple listens I gave Reunions seemed to have a slicker guitar tone. Nothing as heavy as When We Were Close or as ragged and bluesy as This Ain’t It. This Ain’t It is the kind of performance I’ve wanted from the 400 Unit for awhile.
I think the biggest difference is the quality of the songs. Only Children was a pretty good song, and that’s where it ended for me.

Do we know who When We Were Close is about? John Prine? Someone else?
If it’s been said I missed it
Edit: Apparently its about JTE

I’m just curious how you read John Prine into that? I didn’t know it was about JTE on first listen, but it was pretty clearly a young guy whoZip City wrote:Do we know who When We Were Close is about? John Prine? Someone else?

This Cowgirl may be the legit peak of the artform for me. As in the artform of "recorded music."

I was wild guessing at people who Jason knew that died recently.

There ought to be a Grammy for best album title.

I wish the bass in DBT albums was this clear and pronounced.
Also, notice how the weathervane only has S and E on it? Nod to the label?

Yes, sir. Digging this. I think they did a great job with the tunes and Doug's voicemails are fantastic.
