Re: What's Everyone Listening to?
I like The National and I love The Hold Steady, nearly on par with my love for DBT. Both bands best work was earlier in their careers, IMO. I can see why people lost interest in THS after Heaven Is Whenever and Teeth Dreams (although I love about 40% of both records).
I think The Hold Steady has gained a ton of steam in the last two years with Franz Nicolai (pianist) back in the mix. The songs and structures seem to be really informed by Craig Finn's really good solo work that occurred in the THS dead zone. Heaven Is Whenever was a really brittle record, and Teeth Dreams was kind of a tired swing at recreating their best stuff. The last two albums have seem really inspired, and most importantly, fucking fun to me.
They don't top their Holy Trinity (first 3 albums), but I think they can hang with Stay Positive (4th album).
I feel that THS is following a similar (if less profilic) path to DBT. These last two records are their American Band/Unraveling with Heaven Is Whenever and Teeth Dreams being TBTD/GGB.

This is a real good one. Love this band.

A big difference for me is I don't think that DBT have a Brooklyn hipster bone in their collective bodies whereas the other two, well.....Iowan wrote: ↑Tue Feb 23, 2021 5:53 pmI like The National and I love The Hold Steady, nearly on par with my love for DBT. Re: What's Everyone Listening to?
The Hold Steady are very askew of the Brooklyn hipster scene. The core of the band (the 4 members on the first 2 albums) are relocated Midwesterners from Minnesota, Wisconsin, and the Dakotas. Their sensibility is still much more Midwestern than Brooklyn.chuckrh wrote: ↑Wed Feb 24, 2021 7:15 amA big difference for me is I don't think that DBT have a Brooklyn hipster bone in their collective bodies whereas the other two, well.....Iowan wrote: ↑Tue Feb 23, 2021 5:53 pmI like The National and I love The Hold Steady, nearly on par with my love for DBT. Honestly, at this point, I think Patterson has a heavier hipster vibe than Craig Finn. That's not a derogatory comment, but he seems to have become a full Portlander and eschewed his former home. Finn still comes off like an aw shucks Minnesotan that happens to live in Brooklyn.

Re: What's Everyone Listening to?
THS is a band that I like alright if they're on, but I don't seek out when deciding what to listen to.
Also, lyrically, I kinda don't give a fuck about anything Finn is singing about (which is why the comparison to DBT is so weird to me; they are completely different bands in terms of story and lyrics.
I guess you could say, though, that "Girls Who Smoke" is DBT's hat tip to THS on a lyrical level

And I knew when I woke up Rock N Roll would be here forever
Re: What's Everyone Listening to?
Both DBT and THS developed a rep as "story" bands that described a host of miscreant characters trying to figure the world out. Lots of story songs with a ton of pathos for characters that would be seen as pathetic by society in general. DBT has moved away from story telling in favor of statement lyrics, but there was a time when there was a lot in common lyrically between the two. One just had a more Southern sensibility and the other a Midwestern one.
THS has never done anything like the story arc of Southern Rock Opera, but prior to American Band, I think they had a lot of lyrical common ground - which is a big part of why I think the two bands share a lot of fans.
