R.I.P - Charlie Daniels

Post by Howlinwolf »

Sad news out of Hermitage Tennessee this morning that beloved musician Charlie Daniels passed.

83 years old and still rockin. He suffered a stroke (second one this year). He will be missed but his music will live on forever.

R.I.P Mr Daniels, thank you for your music and being a fine human being. A TRUE American

We are devastated. CDB was my first show and the main reason I saw Skynyrd in '75 as they were one of the opening acts. Most likly why I saw Clapton also. One of my favorite shows was CDB, J Geils and Yes. RIP Mr Daniels.
and the rest as they say is uh er uh, well somebodies history somewhere?

When I saw this yesterday I was sad, and still am, it wasn’t surprised. I had been thinking recently that it probably wouldn’t be much longer.

I saw Charlie three times over the years and he out on a great show every time. Two years ago we saw him in Columbus with The Marshall Tucker Band and Travis Tritt. The Marshall Tucker Band was actually much better than I expected despite their advanced age and although I’m not much of a Travis Tritt fan he was pretty good in a live setting. But Charlie, at eighth something years old stole the show by a wide margin. I’m much more a fan of his early material and while he didn’t play a lot of that beyond playing Trudy the second song of the night, it was a real good show.

He was a good man and spoke his mind regardless of whether or not people were going to like what he had to say. I respected him for that.

It’s weird how these things happen but Saturday we were on the way to my brother in law’s for our Fourth of July celebration and my wife played Trudy from her playlist. The kids loved it and I remember thinking we probably wouldn’t have Charlie much longer. Two days later he was gone.

RIP

RIP. For me one of those guys I have to separate the music from the message. I'm guilty of not doing a good job of that in these times. For instance, I have a friend of 30 years that I can't currently talk to without getting angry. Some very warped interpretations of what America means nowadays. It's like the last throes of the British empire. Going to be a long road getting back if it can be done at all.

Currently I’m listening to Te John, Greese, and Wolfman.

I think that the first CD’s that I bought, when CDs were a new fangled thing, were REM (Out of Time) and CDB’s Greatest hits. According to memory, I received my first stereo in eighth grade, complete with two tape decks, an am/fm radio, a RECORD player, and a one disc CD player.

I think that I heard Uneasy Rider a few times on the radio, and eventually taped it from the radio then bought the cd. Charlie Daniels is so much more that the Devil Went Down to Georgia, but y’all know that! Musical literacy is never something which is lacking among this board’s members.

I bet the fiddle sounds good in heaven this morning...

that would be in an incorrect position to assume. let's go to the extreme.

hitler had some decent things to say. put that in context of your quote.

Right on! Upon further reflection, I take back what I said in earlier post. It's been my nature to be diplomatic but fuck that. We're in a war against ignorance & it's time to take a stand. The middle ground is gone. Appeasement has been a huge factor in getting us where we are now.

Fair enough. I enjoyed Charlie in the 70's, and stupid political rants as an old codger doesn't change that.

What did Charlie ever do that was that racist ? I honestly don't know.

He fucking ruled for 12-15 years. His work in the late 1960's through the 1970's is some of my favorite shit ever.
If I can give Chuck Berry and Jerry Lee a pass for their behavior then I can probably do the same for Charlie.

That's how I feel about Ted Nugent's early career. I can still crank the shit out of Stranglehold and rock out without guilt.

Try the jam out part on U2 "Bullet the Blue Sky" instead. They totally lifted it from Turd Nugent. You want to see something really funny, tell a hardcore U2 fan that. Their faces change into non human colours.

That is pretty weak evidence IMO.
My grandmother and her family were sharecroppers in southeast Missouri when she was a kid. She picked cotton and she still talks about it. Should I tell her she is out of touch ?

It was just an example. For me, being a Trump supporter is enough. He & his ilk/supporters have made this country a pariah. No reflection on you or anyone else who likes his music, I just can't support it. Add to that, I live just about as far away from the south as you can get in the country outside of Alaska. So it wasn't really part of my musical past. Heard some stuff on radio back in the day & was always "meh" about it. The evidence was from a quick google search. I didn't waste a lot of time on it.

Charlie played with Leonard Cohen quite a bit too in the late 1960's and early 1970's too.
I'm not sure if that makes Cohen complicit or ignorant or maybe both.

Never in a million years did I think somebody would stop and take the time to pick apart my saying I respected Charlie Daniels for speaking his mind regardless of who it offended. I do t know why you can’t even have a thread paying respect to someone who passed on anymore without people acting like pricks.

Every time Patterson Hood opens his pie hole and starts committing out political opinions a lot of people act like he’s doing something brave or like he even really knows what he’s talking about. Why? He’s on the right side.

And accusing Charlie Daniels of being a racist is about the stupidest damn thing I’ve ever heard. People who are obsessed with racism are usually racists.
