The Unraveling- New Record out 1/31

Post by Clams »

Saw some posts on FB this weekend indicating that the new DBT record (due in early 2020, I believe) is to be called The Unraveling. Not sure of the source of the rumors.

Patterson is the source. He said it from the stage in Louisville.

Amazon music just uploaded "Armageddon's Back in Town" as a single you can listen to now, complete with album artwork. I'm guessing the announcement is imminent?

Pre-order is up! Eeee!!!!! https://drivebytruckers.shop.musictoday ... 2BfxOzOzb4

Details
Drive-By Truckers are kicking off the new election year with The Unraveling, their first new album in 3 1/2 years (the longest space between new DBT albums ever). Those years were among the most tumultuous our country has ever seen and the duality between the generally positive state of affairs within the band and the turbulent world outside (or as Patterson Hood puts it: "watching so many things we care about be decimated and destroyed”) informed the writing of this album to the core. The Unraveling was recorded at the historic Sam Phillips Recording Service in Memphis, Tennessee over 85 hours, mostly live in the studio, aided by long-time producer David Barbe and famed engineer Matt Ross-Spang.

Tracklist:
1. Rosemary With A Bible And A Gun
2. Armageddon’s Back In Town
3. Slow Ride Argument
4. Thoughts And Prayers
5. 21st Century Usa
6. Heroin Again
7. Babies In Cages
8. Grievance Merchants
9. Awaiting Resurrection

Only 9 tracks?

Is one of the songs going to be a long form epic or is this going to be a fast and loose 30 minute album like the ramones used to make?

“Awaiting Resurrection” is pretty lengthy, but I don’t suppose it’s gonna be a very long album. Probably cut it to 9 to keep it to one LP.
All it takes is one wicked heart, a pile of money, and a chain of folks just doing their jobs

Apple Music says 42 minutes.

I’m only seeing two Cooley songs.

I saw this premeried at the Orange Peel in 2017. It was dropped from the set shortly after. I'm a little surprised this made the record. I assumed it was one of those songs that wouldn't be recorded or would end up on a solo album.

So. "Grievance Merchants" is the second Cooley song?

Has that been played live yet anywhere?

Just 2 Cooley songs after 3 1/2 years?

There's been some mention of both guys having some writer's block this time. I like an even split if we can get it, but they've got to work with what they have.

That would explain the long break between records.

But, didn't they also say something about keeping other songs aside for a follow up that they're going to keep working on? There may be more Cooley in that group of songs.

Just for about a half a dozen Heathens who were lucky to stumble in on soundcheck at Gruene Hall last Friday. :P

Only 9 songs is interesting. Sure glad Heroin Again made the cut, as it seems to have been around for quite a while - I like that one.

I had heard Patterson speak to this, but not Cooley...

It feels like the American Band and Unraveling album covers are the first two clues in some sort of long-form mystery
And I knew when I woke up Rock N Roll would be here forever

I like Armageddon’s back in town. Seems similar to the recent Patterson tunes. But that cover..ugh. Not feeling it at all. Looks like something we all could do on our phones in a couple of minutes. But I am excited for the new album and will be ordering the presale vinyl.

I miss Wes Freed too.

Something tells me that one of the kids in the picture is Patterson's son. Not sure where that inkling comes from and I could be wrong. I like the cover - I choose to interpret this as promise for the future - I think it symbolizes a Hood/Cooley type partnership of the next generation pondering the glorious dimmer twin brotherhood all glow in the twilight.

My first thought was that they're meant to be child versions of Cooley and Hood.

I like it.
