Although Silver Jews are still a ways away from recreation, David has written songs and is contemplating the next step. I'd expect a recording session is more likely than live performance. Basically, as is the case with modern day Antarctica, the ice has been broken.
Great news! I am under the impression they were/are primarily a studio band, so Nastanovich's update isn't too out of left field. Good to see Bright Flight is clicking more w/ you, tinnitus. GREAT record.

yeah they didn't do much (if any) live playing when Malkmus was collaborating... the guys from New Radiant Storm King basically became the touring band, at least a couple of them. happy to have caught them twice.
American Water Turns Twenty David Berman’s masterpiece was somewhat out of place when it came out in October of 1998. These days it just sounds like perfection.

Indeed.
I'm intrigued by this record. It sounds great and it's obviously well conceived and executed, both musically and lyrically. My issue is that I've got enough grief and bad shit to deal with in my own life right now and I'm not sure I want to spend 45 minutes listening to all the bad shit going on in David Berman's life too. It might be more than I want to subject myself to.

I hear ya, Clams. Never took you for someone who shied away from the blues and gravitated more to zippety doo-dah. However, how many songwriters can reconstitute misery and spin a verse like this?
When I try to drown my thoughts in gin
I find my worst ideas know how to swim
Fucking brilliant record.

I had all my whole music discography on shuffle on the way home tonight and the last song that played before I came home was "There is a Place", then I come inside to this news. Fuck fuck fuck.
The dead know what they're doing when they leave this world behind
When the here and the hereafter momentarily align
See the need to speed into the lead suddenly declined
The dead know what they’re doing when they leave this world behind
And as much as we might like to seize the reel and hit rewind
Or quicken our pursuit of what we're guaranteed to find
When the dying's finally done and the suffering subsides
All the suffering gets done by the ones we leave behind
All the suffering gets done by the ones we leave behind
Nights that won’t happen
Time we won't spend
Time we won't spend
With each other again
With each other again
Ghosts are just old houses dreaming people in the night
Have no doubt about it, hon, the dead will do alright
Go contemplate the evidence and I guarantee you'll find
The dead know what they're doing when they leave this world behind
Nights that won't happen
Time we won't spend
Nights that won't happen
Never ever again
Nights that won’t happen
Never reaching the end
Nights that won’t happen
Never even begin
Never even begin
This world is like a roadside inn and we're the guests inside
And death is a black camel that kneels down so we can ride
And when the dying’s finally done and the suffering subsides
All the suffering gets done by the ones we leave behind
All the suffering gets done by the ones we leave behind
On nights that won't happen
Time we won't spend
Time we won't spend
With each other again
Nights that won’t happen
Never reaching the end
Nights that won't happen
We can't even begin
We can't even begin

And a setback can be a setup
For a comeback if you don't let up
But this kind of hurtin' won’t heal
And the end of all wanting
Is all I've been wanting
The end of all wanting
Is all I've been wanting
The end of all wanting
Is all I've been wanting
And that's just the way that I feel
between the lyrics, the pure masochism of the "Darkness & Cold" video and the tribute-ish nature of "All my Happiness is Gone"... I hope not
Purple Mountains is to David Berman what Blackstar was to David Bowie. The circumstances of their deaths are obviously very different, but they both knew this was going to be their last record, and both are incredible final statements. I really love this PM record and was so excited that David Berman was back. And then * poof * he was gone. So, so sad.
