Rarities We'd Like to Hear: HC 2019 Edition

Post by brett27295 »

I guess it's about time for the rarely played back catalog songs we're hoping to get at HC (even if there's no chance) thread again. These are mine:

1. Nine Bullets
2. One of These Days
3. Zoloft
4. Do It Yourself
5. Daddy's Cup
6. Carl Perkins' Cadillac
7. The Buford Pusser Trilogy
8. A Blessing & A Curse
9. That Man I Shot (original arrangement)
10. The Fourth Night of my Drinking
11. Go-Go Boots
12. Hearing Jimmy Loud

I've heard "Goodbye" exactly once ten years ago. I'd love to hear that one come back.

I'm sure there are personal reasons for never playing this, but it's an all-time underrated Patterson song that is made for a slow burn rock show
And I knew when I woke up Rock N Roll would be here forever

I'll be disappointed if I get through another Homecoming without Cooley busting out One of These Days. I have somehow missed it at every show I've been to since 2010.

Also would be jazzed about hearing:
Hearing Jimmy Loud
George Jones Talkin' Cell Phone Blues
Grandpa Rock City
Perfect Timing
Bob
Careless
Greenville to Baton Rouge
The Night GG Allin Came to Town
Demonic Possession

Man I've been lucky. I've seen almost all of these.

Good call on Perfect Timing. Got it at my first rock show and haven't gotten it since.

Daddy's Cup.

Goodbye.

Here are mine, I left out songs that I think have no chance of getting played:

Carl Perkins (I can't believe this has fallen so far out of rotation)
Hearing Jimmy Loud
One of These Days
Get Downtown
Primer Coat
Love each other, Motherfuckers!

Agreed. That was the song that got me into DBT. I've seen DBT almost 50 times and I've only gotten it 4 times and not a single time since Homecoming 2014.

my theory why Cooley doesnt play Daddys Cup is because he is perhaps not really a fan of the characters he created for that song. he also not only dislikes car racing, but also potentially has a sore spot for race fans in general and doesnt want to make it seem like he himself is a bud light drinking flag waving church going child spanking MAGA sorta fella. DBT do not represent those things and ya know image is everything.
its just a rambling muse. I could be full of it as usual.

I am about as far from this description as you can get but I love Daddy's Cup and it is the one song I have been waiting to hear for years.

Also would love to hear Checkout Time in Vegas, Cottonseed, Careless, Bulldozers and Dirt, and several others.
Maybe everyday is Saturday morning...

My theory is: there are a whole lot of words in Daddy's Cup.

Then he should tape the lyrics down. As a recent example, Patterson had the lyrics to Charlie Drag the Lake taped down for Birmingham N3.

If Bob Weir can continually nail the words to Truckin’ for pert near 50 years, then Cooley should be able to handle Daddy’s Cup ;)

Hmmm. I doubt that is the reason. He still plays Cottonseed at his solo shows but he's not a Southern mob boss or somebody who thinks murder is cool.

Patterson isn't a murderous preacher. I'm sure he's not cool with what the State Line Mafia did to the Pusser family and he has never served in the military. Yet he has written and performs multiple songs from each of those points of view.

Driveby Truckers are right up front with what they believe in. But if they only performed songs that featured characters they liked and agreed with the wouldn't be nearly as interesting or nearly as good at what they do.

Only Cooley.knows why he never plays Daddy's Cup but not liking the characters doesn't square with anything else about this band and what makes them great.

Though Weir monumentally fucked up the lyrics to Truckin' many times throughout their long, strange trip :D
