The Neverending Thread for Political Shit

This forum is for talking about non-music-related stuff that the DBT fanbase might be interested in. This is not the place for inside jokes and BS. Take that crap to some other board.

I've heard Pearlbeer's audio. And let me tell you - it isn't terrible!

Queso is a good dude. I hope the shut down ends soon, for his sake.

It's memory. I'm not that clever. I simulate being clever by having a good memory and a smart mouth.

I recently listened to a podcast in which a segment had the title "Where have you gone, Barbara Jordan? Our nation turns its lonely eyes to you."

There isn't much in this speech that isn't applicable in the current moment. I just hope we find someone to rise to the occasion that has a tenth of the integrity that Barbara Jordan had.

Like many of you, I'm sure, I have become increasingly concerned that President Trump is a Russian Agent, or at the very least, compromised and acting on behalf of a foreign rival. Thankfully, my fears were completely alleviated this morning. How silly I feel now! All good.

Lol. It's crazy. People are so bored and have it so easy that they have to constantly search for things to be outraged over. Its funny but it's also annoying.

I'm torn between two reactions.

1) If a president I liked did this, I'd think it was pretty cool.
2) If he's a fascist, I'd think there are bigger fish to fry.

Right now, I'm waiting for the dispatch logs for the police department of the city where my best friend lives to come back on line. My other best friend called me today to let me know our mutual friend was in jail. I know the charges, but I'd really like to see the dispatch logs and get the details and whether anyone got hurt. And who is was that did or did not get hurt. And where it happened, and what happened where it happened, and generally just what the fuck! This fast food is silly stuff.

I was pissed when I first heard about this and still wish it hadn't happened. But for those wanting to frame this as "mean white kids disrespect old native man who was just minding his own business" that's not exactly what happened.

Nobody will care about that though and it wont matter as the story has been cemented and it's only a story because of those hats.

Up here the national news reports he was a Vietnam vet who once a year pays homage to fallen brethren. I think this is a news story on so many levels...the red hats do act as an exclamation point though

I think it probably would have been a story without the hats, but that's quibbling. Here's what a writer I like from Canada had to say about it:
Liz James wrote:On the topic of those kids who encircled Omaha Elder Nathan Phillips in their “Make America Great Again” outfits and taunted him with chants of “Build that wall”…

I have a story.

When I was a kid, we would go up to Lac La Ronge in the summer for canoe club events. There was this relay race where you had to carry a raw egg and toss it from person to person. I remember seeing this girl watching on the sidelines, and thinking about how funny it would be if my egg hit her by accident.

Accidents are funny, as any child who watches TV knows.

I threw my egg at her face. It hit, and cracked open. Which means I must have thrown it hard. Hard enough to hurt—a lot. Hard enough to be clearly intentional.

She yelled in shock. Then in pain. Then, as egg oozed down her face and everyone turned to stare at her, in humiliation.

I leapt from my canoe and ran blindly into the woods.

As I ran, the camera angle in my mind shifted. This girl was no longer a piece in my story of an attempted funny broken egg accident. Instead, I was a piece in her story. A story about a white girl from the city who spoke a different language and dressed differently… and who waltzed onto this girl’s land for a week with a bunch of friends. A white girl who saw her, singled her out, and hurt and humiliated her. Just for the joke of it.

It sounds stupid to say, but it hadn’t occurred to me that I might hurt her. Or that I wouldn’t. She was a non-entity to me.

Now, I will remember her face for the rest of my life.

It wasn’t until later that I would learn that this didn’t make me a broken human being. History is filled with people who treated each other with tremendous cruelty because they hadn’t learned to see each other as people yet. We’re a product of the stories we’re told.

These boys, who were so cruel and so dehumanizing to Nathan Phillips… It’s tempting to react to them with righteous indignation. I see a lot of people post about how they would never do such a thing. And every time, I think “I would. I would do something like that. I know what it’s like to do something like that”.

Maybe that’s part of why it feels like a comfortable lie, to me, to talk about what terrible people those boys must be. What they did was awful, and they should be held accountable, but I keep thinking how people are products of the stories they’re exposed to. I keep wondering if we need to ask ourselves how a whole herd of kids were able to see the world this way. And whether we’re making it better, or worse, to heap shame on them.

It feels somehow like we’re making a bulls-eye out of something that ought to be a mirror.

There was some outrageous outrage over re first lady's shoes some time back. They were too expensive or something. There have been like thirty such silly outrages since that one but the fast food at the white house has been the silliest since that one to me.

Precisely.

You disappoint me, Zip. After all these years you still think that I am a cheerleader for one of the two teams in this stupid game. I'm not. I'm definitely way more conservative than liberal but I am not going to be a part of the political team sports. And that's all it is anymore. Like I said somewhere back there, right now the left in this country is acting exactly like the right did during the Obama years. And they look and sound just as crazy.

The champion! Like Ric Flair. I know you don't buy it. A lot of people need somebody to despise and blame for everything. That's definitely a lot simpler and easier and it makes a person feel good to think they are aligned with the good guys. But the truth is usually somewhere in the middle.

Or, some people like looking at the issues in good faith and make decisions based on facts and ethics. And yes, Cole, sometimes there are people who ARE to blame for many, many things, and sometimes those things are worthy of being despised. But your constant need to deride anyone who doesn't view both sides as equally bad is a broken record

I talk about both side being equally bad? Never. Do I call out the GOP when they bitch about the same shit they're doing themselves? Sure. That's two different things.

And though I'm one of the most liberal people on the board, I've called out the Democrats repeatedly for being an incompetent organization.

I'm just tired of all the false equivalency bullshit. Someone can't say "Trump is bad" without someone immediately going "Yeah, b-b-but Pelosi! Hilary! OBUMMER!!!!" I get it, every major political leader has a full resume of faults, but one doesn't excuse the other

Sorry, Zip, my point was not clear enough. Of course you don't view both sides as equally bad. I was talking about constantly deriding opinions that differ from your very liberal stance.
And now I will go back to reading, but not joining the political discussion. I often wonder why Cole keeps trying.
