Saturn- Birmingham, AL 11/6, 7 & 8

Post by Tequila Cowboy »

Election day and beyond with the boys. Saturn is a great new-ish venue complete with coffee bar and a great selection of craft beers. Looks like we're going to do Tuesday and Wednesday. Who's in?

I'm for sure in for Tuesday & Thursday. Wednesday is iffy.

Good background info - from a few years ago - about Saturn:

So, I was just thinkin'....

When was the last time we had 3 nights in one city outside Athens?

Last time I can think of before this were the 9:30 NYE runs...

(Upon further review... they did 3 nights at the Lyric in B'Ham in 2016)

I’ve seen Cooley at the Saturn. I think Bryan may be coming, but I don’t think I can swing this with work.

You'll be missed, Beaverdam. Kinda hard to swing Tuesday, Wednesday, Thursday shows from out of state though. RedCelt and wife from NC had the same problem--you could work Monday, but would need the rest of the week off. I live here and I'm wondering how I'm gonna fare for three nights followed by work the next day---it'll be work, Rock Show, sleep a little & repeat.

The Nick has shows lined up after all 3 shows, with some pretty exciting lineups, including Rob Alridge and the Propoents on Wednesday (Featuring one Rob Malone - yes THAT Rob Malone), several bands that have worked with Matt's Dial Back studio, and a Jay G set on Thursday. Sounds like it's gonna be a good time.

Scheduled start time each night is 10:45 which I assume really means like when DBT finishes + 15 minutes or so.

That Thursday lineup at The Nick looks fantastic.

I'm skirting the edge of having to go out of town for a work conference that week. I think (hope) I'm safe for now on that.

Good for The Nick!

One of the two Tuesday bands is from Portland. I wonder if Patterson is familiar.

Venue is sick there's a big mural inside with a bunch of great AL musicians.
And maybe a big painting of Sun Ra? I may have made that up.
Either way, great intimate place to see DBT, would love to be there.
Saw's Soul Kitchen across the street is great too.
Look closely on the street signs on that block and you may or may not see a WarHen sticker or two.

In for all three. Hitting the polls as soon as they open, then on the road to B’ham.

I have to wake up in six hours, but I'm too keyed up to sleep, so a few random observations:

When a show starts with Women Without Whiskey, you know you're in for a good night. By the time Devil Don't Stay started, I was wondering if this was just a dream and/or if my face might melt off.

This was my first time to hear any of the new songs. Liked them all, particularly the guitars on Babies in Cages. Cooley and Hood both kicked ass on that one.

Met a couple of guys who DROVE to Birmingham from Massachusetts. We also had Kentucky, DC, North Carolina, Mississippi, Tennessee and Worldwide Bill representing Connecticut.

Tyler was modest and gave it only a brief mention, but toward the end of Grand Canyon, Patterson handed his guitar down to Tyler and he went crazy on it. It was fun to watch.

---
Hoping for some rarities from SRO this week since it was recorded here (Plastic Flowers, Road Cases)

Not sure. I generally ask folks, but didn't ask them---really nice guys though. If I run into them tonight, I'll mention 3DD.

It was definitely later -- maybe 8:20 or 8:30 (?)

Wish I could. Was it similar to the time with the Dexateens?

I don't know about Tyler's experience, but the time Elliott handed me his guitar, I was too gobsmacked to play any of the three chords and five notes I know.
