There are times on here when it seems like we're not even listening to the same band.
Is this about “Daddy’s Cup,” “Never Gonna Change,” or both?

I do love Daddy's Cup and would love to hear it live.

My list would be:

Cooley:
Checkout Time in Vegas
Cottonseed
Sounds Better in the Song
Lisa's Birthday

Hood:
Bulldozers and Dirt
Tales Facing Up
Maybe everyday is Saturday morning...

In the interest of expanding my mind, I did some due diligence. This video that GuitarManUpstairs posted on the Track of the Week thread for "Daddy's Cup" is great. I would never take a piss break during this song if it rips like this. It is way, way more interesting to me than the album version (and a particularly good fit for Isbell's blues-inflected guitar style).

Here is my list. I'm omitting songs that I just don't expect to hear under the best of circumstances. (Daddy's Cup, Buford, etc.) Patterson seems to do a pretty good job of digging into the vault. We need a lot more deep Cooley tracks.

Carl Perkins (IMO should be a standard. I'd give up a night or two of Zip City for this to return to regular rotation)
Pauline Hawkins
Too Much Sex
Steve McQueen
Hearing Jimmy Loud
Perfect Timing
Life in the Factory
Heathens (don't think this was played last Homecoming?)
Self Destructive Zones
Checkout Time
This Fucking Job
Cartoon Gold
Primer Coat
Part of Him
Box of Spiders
One of These Days
Get Downtown

Idea: I wonder if we had an additional 3DD fund raiser for Nuci's Space if we could buy our way into Cooley performing Daddy's Cup. Hell, I would be happy to supply cue cards for him. ;)
Love each other, Motherfuckers!

This is actually one of mine too. I didn't even bother to list it because it seems so unpopular around these parts. But screw it. I second Hank's post. I really like this song and would love to hear it live...although we probably have a better shot at Daddy's Cup than hearing this.

Not a fan of Mercy Buckets. The sentiment in the song is great, but the song itself doesn't do much for me. I feel the same about much of Neil's recent topical material (hell, even going back to LWW): agree 100% usually with what he's saying, but the songs themselves typically blow. Mercy Buckets doesn't blow, not saying that

I think it blows. The only song, along with "Used to be a Cop," that I skip without hesitation on It's Great To Be Alive.

I definitely think it is a weak song, period. Glad to hear I'm not alone, got the impression that the song was generally beloved

Good Lord. Mercy Buckets and Used to Be a Cop are two of my top 5 PH songs along with Heathens, Ever South and of course Living Bubba at #1.

Haven't spent the time thinking about rankings like many here likely have, but I can't imagine there are many Patterson songs below Mercy Buckets on my ranking

Different strokes I suppose. I get no value, lyrically or musically, from either.

Putting those songs above R&N, Tornadoes, LTBR...well, really anything off the big three?

Ronnie & Neil and LTBR definitely make the top ten. I love Tornadoes of course but that one is probably not top ten. World of Hurt, Southern Thing and Righteous Path probably round it out. Like you say though to each their own. The key change in UTBAC is one of my favorite musical moments of the whole catalog and the bass line, both Shonna’s and Matt’s versions, is a highlight as well. Always reminded me of Bill Wyman’s bass line on Miss You.

I certainly didn’t mean to be judgemental about it, just took me by surprise. I’ve never heard too much negative talk about those two songs is all.

Maybe if I gave it more time. I certainly think the character and story is important, I just think it's altogether a weak song that is a bit to repetitive and goes on for too long. Mercy Buckets... I will say, at least the horns are great on the live cut.

Forgot about World of Hurt! Another top 5 candidate for sure.

Re the above discussion and to paraphrase Kris Kristofferson--if you don't like Mercy Buckets, honey, you can kiss my ass  Also, yes to Cottonseed but no to Daddy's Cup.

Yeah count me as another who doesn't love Mercy Buckets. I've always found it kind of boring. The lyrics are nice but the song has just never done all that much for me. That's true of a lot of the songs from that era though.

I know they got them already worked up, so I'd fucking love to hear "The Most Beautiful Girl in the World" or "That's how I got to Memphis"

Never would have guessed that either "Mercy Buckets" or "Daddy's Cup" would be "controversial" choices. While I'm a fan of "Used to be a Cop" I can sort of get someone not liking the album version. But the live versions? That's another thing altogether and puts the song in "classic DBT" territory for me.
