Re: English Oceans Discussion Thread
i was one of the ones who heard the high-pitched noise on "Natural Light" and "First Air Of Autumn." now i only hear it on "First Air Of Autumn" and it seems to not be as bad. which is funny, because i think i recall the record company saying there didn't seem to be an issue?
however, my deluxe edition seems to have a skip in the pressing at 0:33 on "'Til He's Dead Or Rises." i know it is in the pressing itself because i was able to do a perfect rip in EAC without any issues.
i don't hear a skip on "Grand Canyon" though (although i could have missed it). dangerbird (great username/song btw), at what point do you hear it? i will check my copy.
does anyone else hear this? if so, does anyone here have any contact information at the record company?

After looking mine was a obvious darker spot in the vinyl at about 1:20, and the needle was raising really high before the skip. I ordered Amazon so a replacement is on the way.
Re: English Oceans Discussion Thread
I see now that my expectations for the DVD were too high. The production values are low and it was recorded in 2.0. I'm not mad - I was just expecting too much.

Re: English Oceans Discussion Thread
just received my second copy of this from amazon has skip in the same spot. I had to increase the weight of the needle to get it to play without skipping. This sucks
Re: English Oceans Discussion Thread
I met my ex-wife yesterday for the first time in around 10 years. She now lives in New Zealand but was visiting the UK as her mother was terminally ill. We had a lunch date. I wore my 'Circle Ghosts' hoodie and as we sat down she said, "I have Jason Isbell's current CD" - she always had great taste in music, that's what brought us together She then said that she knew very little of DBT
When it came time to leave I gave her the copy of EO that I had in the car After I confessed to having three copies(!) she laughed; I never was known for my largesse Anyway, she ended up with a CD for the hire car while she finishes her tour of friends and family and hopefully she'll take it back to the land of the Kiwi bird and spread the word

Has anyone answered that? I just listened to the new Mountain Stage podcast, and I swear that something like that sound from the album was there (in the right speaker) in the same places toward the end of the song.Bearee wrote:And what's with the background mumbling on Grand Canyon?

Found this in my iPhoto library, taken at a friend's cabin on the lake. Looks like an English Oceans Clock to me...

Re: English Oceans Discussion Thread
I like EO so much because it represents a return to prolific songwriting for Mike Cooley. Over the years I've really grown to love "Natural Light and First Air of Autumn". I too think "Primer Coat" is the best song on the album. This album I really liked Hood's songs. "Pauline Hawkins, Part of Him and Grand Canyon" are my favorites. I think "When Walter Went Crazy and Hanging On" are underrated songs on it as well. With GGB, EO and AB I've liked everything the band has done musically. I as a fan have zero complaints and those are the three albums I reach for weekly for multiple spins out of their entire catalogue.

The nice thing about when your favorite band releases a new album is that it naturally makes you go back and listen to previous ones. I often find a deeper appreciation for the albums and find that some of the songs I discredited early on im now very fond of. It takes a band that continues to release quality albums for this to happen I think. The comparing and contrasting of albums by my favorite band is probably my favorite part of being a fan.

Not that I have seen every setlist recently, but I have noticed that there aren't any Patterson English Ocean tunes and only a couple Cooley (MuEO & Shit Shots Count). Anyone else find this peculiar?

Re: English Oceans Discussion Thread
not really. they're still promoting American Band and have a long catalog of must-plays they have to get to. the second-most recent record usually gets left out in this situation, at least for a while.211poundsofpork wrote:Not that I have seen every setlist recently, but I have noticed that there aren't any Patterson English Ocean tunes and only a couple Cooley (MuEO & Shit Shots Count). ...but no Pauline Hawkins? I figured that would be in rotation for a long while.

I wouldn’t call Hood’s contributions to English Oceans weak, but I think that particular album is definitely where Cooley refound his footing after having a rough time during TBTD and Go-Go Boots. No idea if that’s the explanation or not, just makes sense in my head.
Turn it up to 10 and rip off the knob

What is this "rough time" that you speak of?Sterling Bigmouth wrote:I wouldn’t call Hood’s contributions to English Oceans weak, but I think that particular album is definitely where Cooley refound his footing after having a rough time during TBTD and Go-Go Boots. Re: English Oceans Discussion Thread
Perhaps they mean Cooley's quantity of output at that time, because they can't be talking about Cartoon Gold, Pulaski, and Weakest Man being underwhelming. Each of those are stone cold classics. (Of course 2 of the 3 far pre-dated that album)Smitty wrote:What is this "rough time" that you speak of?Sterling Bigmouth wrote:I wouldn’t call Hood’s contributions to English Oceans weak, but I think that particular album is definitely where Cooley refound his footing after having a rough time during TBTD and Go-Go Boots. In regards to three tunes off of TBTD, I can see it. I like Eyes Like Glue the best. I know that its taboo for me to say here, but Birthday Boy has never been one of my favorite tricks that Cooley pulls from his catalog. And although Get Downtown has some hard driving nuts to it, I have hard time separating the fact that I felt it was over-saturated in the setlists for a while.
EO was oviously strong album for Cooley. Cooley's strong writing and tone in AB though are crucially, otherworldly.
