If it's another Southeastern 3.0/NPR fare, it won't end up with much play for me.
Love Southeastern. The last one wasn't my favorite but still average to good most of the time. I would like to see him get back to the roots a bit and put out a rock record.

I don't know why people think that Jason's "roots" are in rock.
And I knew when I woke up Rock N Roll would be here forever

I love Stopping By. I tweeted at him a few months ago about it and he said he'd forgotten about it.
Re: Jason hitting the studio
On WTF he flat out says that 70's arena rock was one of his biggest influences and what made him want to be in a band. He also learned how to play bluegrass from his Grandpa.Zip City wrote:I don't know why people think that Jason's "roots" are in rock.
His roots aren't solely in rock music, but to say he doesn't have "roots" in rock is arguing in the face of a stated fact to the point that Trump supporters would commend the bullheadedness of it.

I thought it had been decided that rock didn't even exist. That it was in fact "rock".

Re: Jason hitting the studio
It was an influence, sure, but his first writing job was more country stuff, and I think being in DBT pushed the arrangements of his songs more towards rock. He even thanks the band for the coda on the end of Decoration Day (which I read as "I wouldn't have had that big rock ending without them").Iowan wrote:On WTF he flat out says that 70's arena rock was one of his biggest influences and what made him want to be in a band. The solo on the Austin City Limits performance of Danko/Manuel is incredible.Cole Younger wrote:Hard to imagine that he's just going to sit on those guitar playing skills for the rest of his career.
I'm with Iowan on all of this. I think he has written several rock songs. Decoration Day, The Day John Henry Died, Easy On Yourself arent rock songs? What are they?
I'll even go so far as to say Danko/Manuel, GDLL, and Daylight are all rock songs. They aren't country songs. I liked and still like Something More Than Free but I admit I would love a rock record or even just something that isn't a record of mostly just quieter songs.

Re: Jason hitting the studio
I don't think the bulk of his solo material is any more country than it is rock; he's more singer-songwriterish John Prine-flavored folk than what I'd call country. That really stands out when he's placed beside Stapleton and Sturgill as the "saviors of country music".
BTW, the original debate wasn't whether he had rock songs but rather "rockers", which is not necessarily the same thing. For example, Danko/Manuel is a rock song but not a "rocker". IME, the best rocker he's had since DBT is " Go It Alone", unless you count songs off Sirens (Try, Crystal Clear).

+1. That whole album and seeing that incarnation of his band was very important to me during that time span.Duke Silver wrote:I'm a "Good" defender. That song was very important to me in 2008-2009.

I don't get the feeling Jason is trying g to be a singer/song writer type as far as trying g to fit into that category. It's kind of where he landed after Southeastern because he was writing about leaving his old life behind after rehab and starting something new and the introspective nature of his writing g at that time manifested that quieter sound. With SMTF I do t know if he was just kind of stuck in that gear or capitalizing on an opportunity since he had this new and bigger audience that wanted that. I don't blame him no matter which one it was. I think we are all kind of trying to place him in a box and he's probably going to prove us all wrong.

I've never minded either of those songs. Perhaps I'm partial to "Daylight" from having seen him perform it during the second Tres Tangled Truckers show well before A Blessing And A Curse was released.Smitty wrote:I must be the only fan of Daylight and Easy on Yourself.

Daylight was the very first DBT song I heard, back in 2007. I think I had one emusic download left and just randomly picked that song for some reason. I love it, and don't hear the out of tune chorus thing that people refer to all the time.

Re: Jason hitting the studio
I like both the verse and the chorus, but I can't think of another song where the verse and chorus are so abruptly different. It's like a chorus from one song was mashed with the verse from another.jr29 wrote:Palmetto Rose is my second favorite tune on that album. Anyone else have the JI poster he was selling on tour last year, a drawing of him sitting on a dock playing guitar with lights on in a house behind him? Took me over a year but I just realized the sky/stars glow in the dark.
