Re: Birmingham - Lyric Theatre - April 7-8-9, 2016
I'm curious about something: Is the Black Lives Matter sign that got a lot of people on the Facebook page all het up on stage there in Birmingham?
(I can't believe I'm missing shows this close to home, but things just didn't line up for it.)
ETA: By looking on the official DBT page, I see the sign was on the stage last night.

Re: Birmingham - Lyric Theatre - April 7-8-9, 2016
I am hoping that since I wasn't in Birmingham last night, that the performance of "Hanging On" and the cover of "State Trooper" were strictly for practice & warm up and will surely make another appearance on Friday or Saturday night. That's my fondest wish. If not, I'll cross fingers for Jackson, MS on 4/29.uncle rickey wrote:Birmingham

Great to meet you; I agree about the seated show weirdness! I sold my FRONT ROW tickets for tonight but I'm looking forward to tomorrow night.CooleyGirl wrote: ... It was fun hanging with Schlanky, Beaver dam, Bill & Lit dimly & nice meeting old Cloverdale....Seated shows are weird. !

If my car wasn't br--I mean, up in Fayetteville waiting to get worked on or crushed into a cube--I'd've ditched the last couple of hours of work and be on the other side of Memphis right now. You folks have a great time, okay?

Loving the set lists. Thanks for posting Uncle Ricky. I'm getting reports from my man on the insde: BeaverDam. He also sent me a picture standing in front of The Nick. Songs that jump out at me from a quick look at the setlists are My Sweet Annette (night #1) and One of these Days (night #2). Epic... Have fun folks on The 3rd Night of your Drinking!! Tim

I can't walk and chew gum at the same time, but last night I watched Jay Gonzalez play guitar, play keyboard, and drink simultaneously!

Jay was en fuego. Such a great show and some serious respect to Matt D. for having the sound spot on. I could hear every note from whatever instrument I chose to focus on and last night I spent a lot of time focusing on Jay and Matt Patton who were both incredible. A 30 song Rock Show in a beautiful historic theater with some great people on a crisp April night in Birmingam? Yes please. Can we do it again tonight?Beaverdam wrote:I can't walk and chew gum at the same time, but last night I watched Jay Gonzalez play guitar, play keyboard, and drink simultaneously!

That is a well-built set. I'd like to have heard The Opening Act electric. And Plastic Flowers--I love that song so much! But I'm a little surprised you all didn't get Surrender Under Protest/Compelled But Not Defeated (the popular title/the title I'd pick--we'll see what Mister Cooley decides) any of those three nights. It bodes well for me hearing it Wednesday.uncle rickey wrote:Lookout Mountain

And now, to top off my weekend, I'm going to go to bed after having puked up lunch, which means missing Brent Best and Kevn Kirby (did I spell that right?) at the White Water. Sigh. I'm just hoping Friday the Thirteenth don't come on a Wednesday next week.

It's 2:35 a.m. and I just got home from The Nick. With three nights of The Rock Show and hanging out with all the 3DDers, this was one amazing weekend.
I found someone's "Hell No I Ain't Happy" shirt in my car when I got home. I'm guessing it belongs to Bill or litdimly. Whichever of you it is, send me a private message with an address and I can put it in the mail early next week.

Re: Birmingham - Lyric Theatre - April 7-8-9, 2016
Smitty has it right. I was commenting last night that it was 10 years ago after a show in Chicago that I said that we had just watched a Rock band at the peak of its powers. As lit dimly correctly pointed out I was dead wrong. They are playing better, right now, two months out from their twentieth Anniversary as a band than I have ever seen them. The are locked in, firing on all cylinders, en fuego or whatever descriptive cliche you choose. So the last two nights we got to see some of our favorite people killing it on stage, spend time with some more of of our favorite people as we attempted to eat Birmingham, and enjoy one of the most beautiful restored theaters I've ever seen. Uh huh. It's fucking great to be alive.

Too Much Sex (Too Little Jesus) has now been played more times in the last 3 weeks than in the preceeding 4 years.
Re: Birmingham - Lyric Theatre - April 7-8-9, 2016
Sitting around the house today recuperating from the weekend, I've had some time for it to sink in just how wonderful this weekend was.
The shows were unbelievable. My show count is way lower than most folks here, but the Friday and Saturday shows were as good as the best shows I've ever seen from DBT. It still amazes me that a band can bring it that hard night after night.
I very much enjoyed seeing CooleyGirl, Uncle Rickey, Tequlia Cowboy, Lurleen McQueen, Smitty & Ladonna, litdimly, pa_heathen & Mr. Heathen, Beaverdam and father-in-law, Bill and Old Cloverdale. It was a treat hanging out with each of you.
Random highlights of the weekend:
Road Cases & Plastic Flowers
The new songs---the next album has a hell of a lot of promise.
The Nick. I hadn't set foot in there in at least a decade. On the drive home, I tried to remember the last band I saw there---pretty sure it was Dick Dale. It was the same old Nick. And both bands we saw were very good.
Sipping beer in the hotel room listening to the banter of people who are long-time friends and just soaking it all in.
Jay closing out Angels and Fuselage on keyboards.

The concerts were great. I'm pretty verbose, but I don't know if I can describe them as eloquently as many of you have on 3DD.
Outside of the concerts getting to meet some of the folks from this site with whom I've talked for years on-line was great, and hanging out and listening to a band at the Nick was among the coolest thing I've ever done.
Cooeygirl, you got some pictures of our group lunch, right? Would you be so kind as to post them on here? I remember my buddy, Tim (Lagoonfield on 3dd) wanted to see some pics, and I failed to take any.
I really enjoyed hanging out with the 3dd crew and felt like I'd known you my whole life, although I just met most of you. At one point, Bryan (my father-in-law) made a comment at the 3dd lunch wondering if some of the regulars from 3DD were going to teach us the secret handshake and said we would probably get initiated into the Drive By Trucker Mafia!!!!
A great, great weekend with some fabulous people!!!! Let's do it again soon!
