Apparently Bowie wrote the liner notes for the above.

Most interesting as always, dime. I don't know about 1/2 assed, but I'd say pretty original and at least 1/2 right. Both were anti the trends of their time and since their time overlapped, they were both most obviously anti the long form guitar based jam and psychedelia that was so prevalent in the late 60's and both were masters of song form/craft. Both had great musical talent - I'd say "proficient" sells both bands short, particularly the Band but as you have made abundantly clear, no band w/ Dave Davies on guitar is short on virtuosity. Both gave their audience something to hold on to in turbulent times because both wrote about their roots and what they perceived to be the true heart of their respective cultures at a time when finding that heart and the common ground it provided was incredibly difficult for so many people. Both incorporated their vast musical influences into something unique and original but I'd say that's where they diverge - while there's some common ground on those influences there's also a whole lot of difference. Which is why the Kinks are so quintessentially English and the Band is so quintessentially something not English (I'm tempted to say American w/out being Americans but that diminishes their achievement so I'll just leave the labels off).dime in the gutter wrote:1/2 assed theory of the night:

And FWIW, the Kinks were around for a lot longer and explored a lot more musical and thematic territory than the Band so I agree w/ your [non] one trick pony statement though I might not have said it that way

I also believe the addition of keyboardist John Gosling (far left) in 1970 brought similar layers to The Kinks' sound that Garth Hudson did for The Band. Additionally, both bands incorporated a good amount of Dixieland horns into their music.

don't read the reviews, don't pay attention to the negative hype about the production. jump in and rock balls to one of the great rock and roll bands of all time ripping it up and laying it down.
