That's a good list but you forgot Boston, Meat Loaf and Blue Oyster Cult.

Boston for sure. Maybe even Queen. I only recall a couple of songs from Mr. Loaf.
BOC is a personal fave of mine, and they have no business being lumped in w/ that crew (which has a precipitously steep drop after the Doobies).

No Frampton, Jethro Tull, Supertramp, ELO, Santana, Emerson, Lake & Palmer, Steve Miller Band, or Chicago?

Not sure about the term 2nd tier, but I do know Steely Dan belongs nowhere near the rest of those guys.
add BTO to it though.

Re: 2nd tier FM radio dinosaurs from the '70s
I'd add 38 Special but I guess they weren't really getting radio play until the early 80s.

Steely Dan is pretty much in the first tier of any list I'm making of bands from the 70s.

The Dan suffered from incidental Michael McDonald contact.
Skunk was cool, though.

WTF? Steely Dan a second tier band? You've got to be kidding.
Santana was a lot of bands some of which might belong on this list but some (many? most?) of which don't. Ye gods tinnitus. When I'm standing at the pearly gates I hope that's not you w/ a clipboard in your hand.

Re: 2nd tier FM radio dinosaurs from the '70s
.....and how about the softer stuff: Bread, America, Jim Croce, etc. I guess that stuff's more "AM" than FM, yes?
(oh, and agree that Steely Dan doesn't belong on the 2nd tier list - others are right on target....although you could argue Seger and Santana)

We also got these two a lot around here (Raleigh), maybe more though these are by Manfred Mann not Manfred Mann's Earth Band.

I never did have any sense:
Steely Dan
Santana
Jethro Tull
Heart
Steve Miller Band
Emerson, Lake & Palmer
All that other stuff
The Duppie Brothers
I do question the top three being on any sort of shit list. Some days I'd put Tull on top. Other days I'd stir ELP into the other stuff. It just depends. And no doubt I might've been too cool back in the day to judge some of the others fairly.

Re: 2nd tier FM radio dinosaurs from the '70s
Agree with all those who feel the Dan is definitely first tier. Relisten to "Katy Lied" or "Aja" and argue otherwise.
Now it's dark.

To paraphrase Jeff Tweedy, regarding Bad Company:

Re: 2nd tier FM radio dinosaurs from the '70s
Arent they all awful?
Thats what 18-25 year old me would have said. 50 year old me agrees with 25 year old me, mostly.
The best band of the 1970's you say? The Sex Pistols. Followed by The Clash. Followed by Talking Heads, The Ramones and a host of others.
I have come to appreciate, in later years, (much much later years) some Eagles, and I own a Bob Seger album (there I said it).. as for the rest ot them? Not my thing.

I've never taken a pissbreak during a DBT show but if I had it would have been during Dancing Ricky.

Re: 2nd tier FM radio dinosaurs from the '70s
I hated Steely Dan for 35 years. Actually that's too soft a word, despised is better. Somehow when I turned 50 I started to dig them and now I listen regularly. Early Doobie Brothers was great stuff, ditto early Chicago, I can't understand how Bad Company makes such a list and a pretty large portion of Steve Miller's work is pretty great. I also don't mind Seger. The rest? Pretty sucky. I don't think there's a word to describe just how awful Styx and Kansas were.

Re: 2nd tier FM radio dinosaurs from the '70s
i think there's been some misunderstanding of this thread, based on some of the replies.
I love Steely Dan; the list wasn't meant to just cherry pick bands that i don't like...the meaning of '2nd tier' was to differentiate them from the huge rock stars of that era (ie, Stones, Springsteen, Who, Zep, Floyd, etc) that were also on the radio all the time.
and the FM radio dinosaurs from the 70s would obviously disqualify The Pistols, Clash, et al. Unless your local FM station was a lot different from mine.

This seemed pretty clear, IMO.
