Let's not get carried away now. Though I will give you the first couple & Hotel California.
The Eagles might not be cool, but they are a pretty significant mile post on the classic rock highway. All I've got is the two Greatest Hits records and every song is good. Classic rock might have overplayed them and Don Henley might be a douchebag, but those guys made some pretty good country/rock songs back in the day. (Credit to Smitty for the mile post reference).
I like some of the early Eagles stuff but compared to what the Flying Burrito Brothers, the Byrds, the New Riders of the Purple Sage, Poco and others were doing, I prefer them to the Eagles any day of the week. I don't rule out their latter day work completely either but I much prefer Walsh's work with the James Gang to anything he ever did with the Eagles. Unfortunately the James Gang are considered a footnote. As for "Hotel California", I didn't mind hearing it the first 100 times or so but now, I'd be content with never having to hear it again at all. Yep, not the Eagles' fault, we have "Classic Rock" radio to blame for that.
