What's Everyone Listening to?

Know of a great band you think we'd like to hear about? Got some music news? Or just want to talk about music in general? Post it here.

Let's not get carried away now. Though I will give you the first couple & Hotel California.

The Eagles might not be cool, but they are a pretty significant mile post on the classic rock highway. All I've got is the two Greatest Hits records and every song is good. Classic rock might have overplayed them and Don Henley might be a douchebag, but those guys made some pretty good country/rock songs back in the day. (Credit to Smitty for the mile post reference).

I like some of the early Eagles stuff but compared to what the Flying Burrito Brothers, the Byrds, the New Riders of the Purple Sage, Poco and others were doing, I prefer them to the Eagles any day of the week. I don't rule out their latter day work completely either but I much prefer Walsh's work with the James Gang to anything he ever did with the Eagles. Unfortunately the James Gang are considered a footnote. As for "Hotel California", I didn't mind hearing it the first 100 times or so but now, I'd be content with never having to hear it again at all. Yep, not the Eagles' fault, we have "Classic Rock" radio to blame for that.

Yeah, no. Early on there were some good songs but Hotel California is the poster child for why the punk revolution happened and after that it really got bad. I have softened on a lot of my old musical prejudices (Fleetwood Mac, Bob Seger, Steve Miller, Jackson Browne, James Taylor and a few others) but this will be a lasting one I'm afraid.

I never had a prejudice against any of those other artists (lots of folks that hate the Steve Miller Band seem to be completely oblivious to his pre-Joker period) but I know plenty of people that did (and still do). When it came to the Eagles I was much more interested in the bands I previously mentioned when I was growing up, yet I did have a very casual interest in them. Meaning, I was never into them enough to buy any of their records other than the live one (same for Fleetwood Mac, I got them both in one of those Columbia House deals) and even then it never got many spins though I did like "Seven Bridges Road" (still do, in fact). By the time Hotel California and The Long Run came around, the bloated excess you mentioned that was the backdrop for punk was in full effect. Despite my disdain for the Eagles, I'm still interested in seeing the documentary on them that debuted on Showtime recently. As the tagline for Behind the Music on VH1 used to say, "we even make Tony Orlando seem interesting".

Buckingham/Nicks-ST

Inspired by TC's FMc post. This a really good record that I haven't spun since divorce back in '95. Ex wife was a Nicks/Fleetwood Mac freak and burned me out on em for about,oh, 20 years or so.

Edit to acknowledge that Stevie was also Smokin hot back then. We saw them live the first time in '75. Wow. She and Christine together were quite a force.
That is all
