Eyes Like Glue

Post by LilSpider »

Standard DBT tuning one full step down (DGCFAd)

This is adapted from this video
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=VZELRKT6uY4

I play it with a capo on the third fret; the chords below denote the shapes.

(C ought to be played as a barre chord on the third fret down from the capo rather than in the first position.
Dmaj7 is like a barre chord across strings 1-3 at the second fret down from the capo.
Bm/A is meant to mean a Bm chord with an open 5 string)

Fundamentally this seems to be a Travis picking pattern. At its most simple it can be played like this
(D Shape)
e---2-------2--------
B------3-------3-----
G---2-------2-----2--
D-0-------0----------
A--------------------
E--------------------

or this
e----2-------2--------
B--------3---------3-----
G---2-2-----2-2---2--
D-0--------0----------
A--------------------
E--------------------

Regarding chord shapes, C ought to be played as a barre chord on the third fret down from the capo rather than in the first position.
Dmaj7 is like a barre chord across strings 1-3 at the second fret down from the capo.
Bm/A is meant as a Bm chord with an open 5 string.
G-A-D is meant as quick changes of those chords

Intro: D Dmaj7 Bm C Bm Bm/A G-A-D

[D]I see you watching me, [Dmaj7]your eyes are just like glue
[Bm]Stuck like glue to every [C]foolish thing I say and do
[Bm]But there's a safer distance [A]still not out of touch
[Bm]If Daddy's quiet it probably [C]means he's thinking way too much

Bm Bm/A G-A-D

Same chord changes as verse 1
Someday you'll be a man, you'll have a big old brain
You won’t need it but you'll try to use it just the same
But it's like any house lonely people roam around
Wasted empty space a maze with only one way out

Bm Bm/A G-A-D

[Bm]Nobody ever told me [C]half the things I'm telling you
[Bm]Even if they had I'da [A] had the same look that you do
[Bm]Sometimes you think it and you [C]want to hear it said out loud
[Bm]If no one else does then it’s [C] up to you to shout it out

Bm Bm/A G-A-D

Same chord changes as verses 1 & 2
You'll want to do it all, and you'll believe you can
But when the best that you can do becomes all you can stand
You'll know you're just a man when you feel all the weight press down
Next time you're watching me remember that's all I am now

Bm Bm/A G-A-D

This is one of my favorite Cooley songs. Thanks to LilSpider for the original post of chords with capo.
I watched the video they recommended way too many times, and I think I figured out how Cooley plays it without a capo.
It is a bit of a workout with all the barres but pretty easy to move around once you get the hang of it.

Eyes Like Glue
By Drive-By Truckers
In DBT tuning (1 whole step down)
No capo version

Notes:
The Travis picking outlined previously works great
All chord shapes/positions are as outlined in intro and first verse.
Sorry for the roman numerals after the chords, but I couldn't figure out how to do subscripts for the post. I do think it helps with figuring out where to be on the neck to get the "Cooley vibe."
All chords are barre chords with fret postion noted after the chord, (e.g. GX is G barre at 10th fret, CV is barre at 5th fretetc)
Every chord is one measure, and denoted with a bracket, except this one combo, which is all one measure in one bracket.
[CVIII/BVII AV DV]
(The CVIII/BVII means keep the C shape, and just walk your pointer figure down one fret on the 6th string).

For a great version (and some of the chord shapes)
see Cooley and Co. do this almost unplugged here:

[EmVII ] Stuck like glue to every [FVIII] foolish thing I say and do
[CVIII ] But there's a safer distance [DV ] still not out of touch
[EmVII] If Daddy's quiet it probably [FVIII] means he's thinking way too much

[CVIII] [CVIII/BVII AV DV] [GX]

[G]Someday you'll be a man, [Gmaj7] you'll have a big old brain
[Em] You won’t need it but you'll [F] try to use it just the same
[C]But it's like any house [D] lonely people walk around
[Em] Wasted empty space a [F] maze with only one way out

[CVIII] [CVIII/BVII AV DV] [GX]

This is my attempt, beautiful song. First and last time I'm going to ever tab :D

Low to High E Bar chords like Cooley plays in the mentioned video,
remember this is standard tuning, so if DBT tune 1 whole step
down then tune your guitar 1 whole step down and move the barchords
up by two frets. Otherwise leave standard and play like this.
Travis picking above seems OK but for Barchords keep in mind Cooley keeps
his picking stuctured around the keys notes (A to B Strings)
almost muting out high and low e strings

Into/ Outro Pattern

D Minor 7th {10 12 10 10 10 10}
C6sus2sus4/D {10 12 10 10 13 10}
Dm/A {5 5 7 7 6 5}
D#/A# {6 6 8 8 8 6}
Dm/A {5 5 7 7 6 5}
Dm/A {5 5 7 7 6 5}
Gm {3 5 5 3 3 3}
C/G {3 3 5 5 5 3}

Verse Pattern

D Minor 7th {10 12 10 10 10 10}
C6sus2sus4/D {10 12 10 10 13 10}
Dm/A {5 5 7 7 6 5}

Dm/A {5 5 7 7 6 5}

Bridge (Middle eight) Pattern
