"He May Be Zuckerberg...But You are the Mark"

This forum is for talking about non-music-related stuff that the DBT fanbase might be interested in. This is not the place for inside jokes and BS. Take that crap to some other board.

"He May Be Zuckerberg...But You are the Mark"

This could go in the politics thread but I think it's worthy of its own spotlight.

T-Bone Burnett (!) speaking at SxSW, nailing our technological moment and its inherent risks in terms I have not seen/heard anywhere else. Well worth your time.

I will cross post in the music forum because T Bone Burnett and SxSW but this is far bigger than either of those worthies.

The artists are our only hope.
The sciences have failed us.
The churches have failed us.
The politicians have failed us.

Good stuff, except it accompanies a call for increased regulation.
Meaning more government control. By the politicians.
Don't hurt people, and don't take their stuff.

OK, fair enough. But if by "good stuff" you mean the identification of big tech as a threat to freedom how do you propose to address the threat w/out government regulation (I'm assuming that you include old fashioned break ups under antitrust law as "regulation")? If you want to say "let the free market take care of it" please outline a realistic scenario in which that might happen.

Nobody is forced to join Facebook. It is possible to avoid Google.
People choose to give away their personal information.
Asking big brother to protect you from your own choices is a bad idea.
Don't hurt people, and don't take their stuff.

This is not perfectly in synch with the conversation you guys are having, but it seems a better place for this than anywhere else. This is from the $250 million lawsuit Devin Nunes has initiated against Twitter:

https://splinternews.com/devin-nunes-is ... 1833390914

“Access to Twitter is essential for meaningful participation in modern-day American Democracy,” Nunes’ complaint states. “A candidate without Twitter is a losing candidate. The ability to use Twitter is a vital part of modern citizenship. A presence on Twitter is essential for an individual to run for office or engage in any level of political organizing in modern America. That is because Twitter is not merely a website: it is the modern town square."

I don't do Twitter or Facebook or any form of social media, so I'd be interested to hear other takes on his statement. I think he's vastly overstating the role for Twitter in politics, but I'm a Luddite and may very well be coming from a "the way things should be, not the way they are" POV
Son, this ain't a dream no more, it's the real thing

You can. However, you'd be a fool to not utilize the platform if you were running for public office.
