A “poop train” with millions of pounds of excrement carted in from New York has been stuck in a rural Alabama town for months now in regulatory purgatory, and no one knows when it will leave.

The town of Parrish, Alabama, population 982, has been taken over by the stench, which residents describe as more of a rotting carcass smell with a whiff of human waste, due to the way it was treated. (It’s technically called “biosolids.”) The train is stuck in a rail yard next to a softball field. People can’t sit outside, children can’t play outside, and the town is considering rescheduling little league games. The threat of the summer heat looms.

According to the AP, it’s common for Northern states to ship their waste to rural areas in the South, and landfills on inexpensive land can make good money from the practice. An Alabama attorney general once described one of Alabama’s landfills as “America’s biggest industrial pay toilet.”

Lowndes Co is indeed very poor. Part of the Black Belt.

Try visiting nearby Selma sometime. That will make you sad too. I was there for the first time in (then) 47 years to see Hood. Very historic visiting the marchers museum and driving over the Edmund Pettus bridge. Besides a few nice churches and buildings downtown near the venue, not much else.

One canceled gig was at Pablo’s Restaurante & Cantina (the irony never ends), in Birmingham’s Shops of Colonnade shopping center. The restaurant manager, Putu Primanta, told AL.com that he canceled McCain’s show, scheduled for Tuesday, in response to the backlash.

“I’m an immigrant myself. I’m from Indonesia and I work in the Mexican restaurant here, and I’m doing the booking for the restaurant,” Primanta said Tuesday afternoon. “Our clientele is from many different backgrounds, and I was afraid it was going to hurt our business. I’m just here trying to make a living and be friends with everybody.”

This restaurant is about five minutes from my house. The next time we're in there, I'm gonna thank them.

I used to work at BellSouth there--I guess it's all AT&T now, if it's still there--and we'd walk down to the restaurants down a long, long outdoors staircase. My memory is fuzzy sometimes: Is that the same part of Colonnade?

Officials Warn of Wasp ‘Super Nests’ in Alabama


When James Barron went into his smokehouse in southern Alabama to grab an ax, he was alarmed to see a giant wasp nest about seven feet wide extending along the wall. It had been two months since he had last stepped foot inside.

Charles Ray, an entomologist with the Alabama Cooperative Extension System, drove to Mr. Barron’s home and confirmed the colony was a “super nest” — one that survives into a second year. He told Mr. Barron there were probably 15,000 to 18,000 wasps in the smokehouse.

That super nest was one of four in Alabama that Mr. Ray has confirmed this year. There are usually only one or two super nests spotted each year, in June and July, Mr. Ray said. In 2006, however, he recorded 90. “I expect to approach that number this year,” Mr. Ray said.

They're gonna need to lure them into the Superdome, a la The Savage Bees!
