This forum is for talking about non-music-related stuff that the DBT fanbase might be interested in. This is not the place for inside jokes and BS. Take that crap to some other board.

Turns out Michelle Shocked is quite the homophobe.
San Francisco may not be the best place to announce that fact.

Not that it pertains to the story in any way, shape or form but her brother is Max Johnston of the Gourds and Uncle Tupelo. If I've got my facts straight he was asked to join Uncle Tupelo after they guested on Michelle's Arkansas Traveler record (which Max played fiddle on).

This is one of the most upsetting stories I've read in a while. I'm trying to figure out how to react and what to feel.

UPDATE A FEW SECONDS LATER: Posting that reminded me of this man, who remains one of my great heroes. By the end, he had a totally fucked life full of embarrassments, but he also did much more good than I ever will, and in a very short period of time. In a small way, this reminds me of that.

I was unaware until yesterday of it but Shocked has been prattling this garbage for some time and nobody paid attention. In San Francisco they do pay attention to such things. Honestly this just smacks of total self loathing. She's a lesbian, she went to church and God says it's bad, now she lashes out with inappropriate behavior. It's sad more than anything else especially since I really dug her music at one time.

As did I, even though I only have one of her records (Arkansas Traveler) and a 45 of "Anchorage" in my collection. She played in Durham not long ago but I didn't attend. In a case like this I think there's no argument when it comes to separating the singer from the song. In other words, I'm not so sure that I can go on liking her music because of her outright hatred for homosexuals. I'm sure she has her defenders. In fact, I've already read one such article which tried to make the case that she was being ironic and that was misunderstood by the audience. I tried to dig it up but to no avail. It was on Yahoo News. This article is all I could find, which appears to be a re-written version of the original. Still worth a read, I think.

**Edited to add, here's the article from Yahoo that I was referring to:

Not that it does anything to clarify the situation but Michelle Shocked has released a statement that you can read here.

The full version is here.

I listened to it last night. Seventeen minutes in, she says, "So where am I supposed to say this shit?" and someone replies "Arkansas". Damn.

This is really sad. I honestly don't think she's a bigot, and I think I get what she was trying to do. I've tried to express human concern for people who have wrong ideas before, and for the weight those wrong ideas put on them. I don't think I've ever successfully pulled that off--it's hard--and it's got to be harder when you share some of those people's ideas and when you're working in the moment, both of which apply to Michelle in this case. But she so totally failed to explain herself well--I've never succeeded, but I've also never failed at this as hard as she did--that it's just a disaster. And at this point she sounds a little paranoid, and though she's maybe got reason for it now, I don't think it's the healthy sort.

This was posted on the Son of No Depression page on Facebook earlier today:

"For better or worse, I’m the guy from the UK who brought MShocked to wider attention through a recording I made at Kerrville Folk Festival in 86 – the meeting came about around the dying embers of a campfire shortly after encountering her for the first time, after walking up and asking if I could make a recording as part of my travelogue tape as I wended my way open-eyed around the States for the first time. A very intimate performance followed for an audience of one, one of the most magical moments in my life.

"That session subsequently became known as the infamous ‘Texas Campfire Tapes’ which was then released on the small indie label I had just started, Cooking Vinyl.

"I knew from the first moment that there was a dark side to her, but still made the decision to move forward and contact her again as the recording was very special and deserved to be heard. She gave her unqualified support to the project (though later re-writing history by claiming it was a bootleg!) She soon moved to the UK, determined to give the singer / songwriter thing her best shot, touring it here, there and everywhere around Europe. Her stage performances were quite extraordinary in their intensity and warm charm.

"I quickly learned that many regarded Michelle as very calculating and it was clear that she was uncompromising, to the extent that she seemed to fall out with pretty much everyone she ever worked with, including her first manager, with whom she was locked in a five year legal battle over non-payment of management commission, which included the work he did in securing her deals with Polygram and Polygram Music and much more. I believe that she then went on to sue her major record company by citing the Thirteenth Amendment, which abolished slavery.

"There are many things I could say, from first hand experience especially about her re-writing the history around her Cooking Vinyl years, that supposed ‘bootleg’ we were meant to have released “without her knowledge” – an untruth that permeated across Wikipedia, Amazon and beyond to this day which is about as much of a distortion of the truth as I could ever imagine, given the lengths we all went to to work the album in the press, on TV and radio and her touring it live all over Europe whilst living in the UK.

"And years later, her ‘bootlegging’ (if I dare to use the word again!) a third generation copy of my campfire cassette recording I sent her for reference purposes, only to find she then mastered and released it on her label as ‘The Texas Campfire Takes’ with not even a mention of my involvement, let alone an attempt to negotiate any sort of deal with me for the release, although she was happy enough to use my photo on the cover without credit. Put simply, it was more convenient to airbrush me out of history.

"Enough for now. Much as it pains me to revisit this stuff once more, maybe some good with ultimately come out of the chaos that seems to follow Michelle around, which so often seems to lead to grief for those around her. The fact that some of my friends have contacted me saying they have destroyed their copies of Texas Campfire Tapes is something I will slowly take on board, much as I feel pity for this lost soul too. I wish her well and I hope that through whatever means, she eventually finds a peace that is not hateful and hurtful to others."

Tennessee lawmakers upset by mop sink that could be for Muslim foot washing

Republican lawmakers in Tennessee sprung to action and demanded answers after confusing a mop sink recently installed in the state Capitol for a Muslim foot-washing sink.

Members of the state House and Senate contacted state Senate Clerk Russell Humphrey to ask if the floor-level sink had been installed outside the House chamber men’s restroom to accommodate Muslims’ ritual of washing their feet before prayer, according to The Associated Press.

“There was concern about why it had been modified,” Humphrey said.

Republican state Sen. Bill Ketron confirmed that he had taken this issue up with Humphrey after state Rep. Judd Matheny (R) became troubled that the sink could be for Muslims.

“I just asked the question about what was the intent of that,” Ketron explained.

Legislative Administration Director Connie Ridley assured the lawmakers in an email that “the facility administrator for the State Capitol Complex that the floor-level sink installed in the men’s restroom outside the House Chamber is for housekeeping use.”

“It is, in layman’s terms, a mop sink,” Ridley said.

Neighborhood oil giveaway! Over 12 thousand gallons to the first person who gets them. It's just laying around poisoning our families and homes and soil and soaking into our water table.

Based on Exxon's past history in leaving oil from spills to contaminate other areas for generations, there should plenty to go around even when they're done "cleaning" it.

First come first serve. We will bear no responsibility for the toxicity of the oil and the harm it may do to you and/or your loved ones, like someone else we all know. ;)

apparently I am just panty challenged!!! WTF seriously I am almost 48 years old and can't get my panties together.

So today's episode of As the Panty Drops, begins with wearing a black top (which under florescent lights became very sheer at work, which of course showed off my black and WHITE checked bra  )

So this causeD me to walk around in my Go Go Gadget raincoat  which whilst (still love that word) I am in the potty I go to pull my self back up and the belt from said raincoat gets caught!!! So I tug on it, it apparently got caught on my thong and when I pulled it, I gave my colon a Fn' wedgie!!!! MF-POS, that is it NO MORE PANTIES!!!!

While of course ending up getting smacked by the buckle of raincoat right in the puss!!! I am just a little too young to be having all these potty issues, seriously my lady bits had a very very bad Thursday!!!!

and to add to this foolishness, on my way to work today (I am driving Lou's truck an F350 utility) this WOMAN!!! broadsides me and then says "I didn't see you" are you serious!!???? the drivers section is as tall as Lou and he is 6'5", the truck is 20+ feet long and almost 6' wide ??? really??? didn't see me??? how about you didn't stop at any of the 4 stop signs you rolled through !!! UGH

but no one was hurt, which is always a good thing. My truck does have a scratch on the drivers door and she cracked her passanger headlight cover. She is probably over 65, maybe 5' tall and was stuffed into this giant parker coat which made her look like an elderly version of "wack a mole"

http://www.kcrg.com/news/local/Reward-Offered-in-Bacon-Burglary-204457981.html

DES MOINES, Iowa (AP) - The Iowa Bacon Board has offered a reward to whoever provides the information that leads police to the burglar who took bacon and other items from a Des Moines home.

Someone broke into the home Monday and stole jewelry and electronics, bacon, pork chops, sausage, chicken and four pounds of hamburger.

The Des Moines Register says the Bacon Board is providing VIP passes to Des Moines' Blue Ribbon Bacon Festival as the reward. And the board and Eden Farms will be providing the burglary victim with 15 pounds of bacon and two tickets to the festival.

No arrests have been reported.

Here in Iowa, we don't care about electronics or jewelry, but if you steal bacon, there will be a bounty on your ass.

This may not surprise fans of HBO's The Wire:

"A cabal of corrupt corrections officers and members of the Black Guerrilla Family gang enjoyed nearly free rein inside the Baltimore City Detention Center, federal authorities allege, smuggling drugs and cellphones into the jail and having sexual relationships that left four guards pregnant. An indictment unsealed Tuesday names 25 people — including 13 women working as corrections officers — who face racketeering and drug charges. Twenty of the accused also face money-laundering charges." (The Baltimore Sun)

CBS Baltimore says "the ringleader of it all, according to the indictment, is Tavon White, a four-year inmate charged with attempted murder. He reportedly made $16,000 in one month off the smuggled contraband. Four corrections officers–Jennifer Owens, Katera Stevenson, Chania Brooks and Tiffany Linder, who are also facing charges — allegedly became impregnated by White since he's been in jail. Charging documents reveal Owens had 'Tavon' tattooed on her neck and Stevenson had 'Tavon' tattooed on her wrist."

The Sun says the court documents accuse White of running a lucrative operation: Authorities report that "White said in a recorded conversation that he made as much as $15,800 in a single month selling contraband in jail, and gang members once boasted they could turn $1,000 in profit on an ounce of marijuana."

According to the Sun, "no attorney is listed in court records for White or other defendants. ... As officials were laying out the allegations at a news conference, some of the defendants were appearing in federal court across the street. Most were released on their own recognizance and were escorted by law enforcement out of the courtroom. Their lawyers declined to comment. One of the women appeared before a magistrate judge still wearing her corrections uniform."

Not even gonna make the papers (small town politics), but last month a seriously meth-addicted woman down here drugged a 17 year old girl and let her 11 year old son rape her; the girl woke up during the attack and the woman tried beating her with some kinda rod but the girl got away. The woman who did the attacking is the granddaughter of the president of the garden club, so that's why I can't post a link.
