History/Movie-TV questions for Cole Younger

This forum is for talking about non-music-related stuff that the DBT fanbase might be interested in. This is not the place for inside jokes and BS. Take that crap to some other board.

History/Movie-TV questions for Cole Younger

Post by Swamp »

since I got no go's.....
1. Why not Jim or Bob? (obviously not John)
2. Who played your favorite set of brothers in the movies and/or tv?
3. In a slightly related question to #2, if you were stranded on a desert island,
who from Gilligans Island would you want with you?
and the rest as they say is uh er uh, well somebodies history somewhere?

If Cole Younger's goal is to get off the island (as opposed to having endless island/beach sex with Mary Ann), the professor is really his only choice. No, he was never able to get the group off of Gilligan's Island, but that wasn't his fault. His efforts were constantly foiled by Gilligan's stupidity and the gang's hijinks. Without Gilligan, the Skipper, Mr. and Mrs Howell and Ginger to fuck things up, I bet the professor would be able to get Cole off that island and back to Georgia within 30 days.

Btw- Swamp, you have really taken Swamp's Questions of the Week (SQOTW) to a whole new level today. Bravo.

Mary Ann for the weed PLUS the other perks but after all that hot beach sex Clams so eloquently described you would need to shower and somehow the Professor managed to build a hot water heater with monkeys and coconuts so his skills would be useful.

I'm a little embarrassed by how flattered I am to be included in this.

1. Before I answer this question I should probably first admit to the randomness with which my screen name was chosen. When I created my account I had no idea what I was going to call myself. At the time I was really active on another message board which is centered around all things outdoors in Georgia and really didn't know if I had time for two of these. As it turns out I ended up spending g a lot more time here than there but I digress. I was mulling over possible screen names and considered Ronnie Van Zant's ghost as a name but it was too long. I was sitting in front of the TV and was watching The Great Northfield Minnesota Raid. Bam! I became Cole Younger here on TDD. But i guess it really is t that random when I think about it. I love westerns. I love history. I love reading about Outlaws and the guerrillas of the Confederacy have always fascinated me. Particularly the James's and Younger.

So, to answer your question, it really boiled down knowing more about Cole than Jim or Bob. And David Carradine's portrayal of Cole had more than just a little to do with that choice as well. Which is a nice segue into question number two.

2. The Long Riders is my favorite movie about the James's and the Youngers and it really ain't even close. I prefer Robert Duval's Jesse James but otherwise I like The Long Riders a good bit better than Raid although I do like that movie. As I said, Carradine's Cole Younger is as real as it gets and you also get good performances from Keith Carradine as Jim, Stacy Keach as Frank James and a fairly convincing Randy Quaid as Clel Miller. All of that along with some killer scenery (I've never checked to see where it was filmed but my buddy KC spent some time up in the Missouri boot heel and says it looks just like what you see in the movie) and the inclusion of I'm a Good Ol Rebel in the movie's sound track. Y'all know I'm glad the South lost for all of the obvious reasons. But my Southern Scots Irish blood loves the defiance in that song even if I don't agree with the sentiments expressed.

Now to our most interesting question.

3. I hate to get into fine print type of stuff but man I'm obligated to with something this important. It depends. Am I married in this scenario? Or is COMPLETELY fantasy? If Im a man with no wife at home it's Mary Ann and I say that with no hesitation. Ginger is alluring but Mary Ann is every bit as sexy and she is more my type so familiarity and all that. But there's more at play there. Mary Ann may not be from the South but she is a farm girl. I feel confident she would be a big help in engineering some sort of way off the island whether it be building a boat or something else. Also, she would be adept at helping gather/hunt and prepare wild game or fish as food. I can't see Ginger being g much help in either capacity and there is the added burden of having to listen to her complain. And I doubt she's as tough as Mary Ann and I don't give her great odds in a survival situation if it's just the two of us.

If my wife is back in Georgia waiting for me then it's the professor all the way. Minus the sexual attraction he's got all Mary Ann's other plusses and exceeds her in that regard with his scientific knowledge. I feel confident between his intellect and my walking around sense/adeptness at hunting fishing and surviving in tough condition we would be fine.

The Skipper would be a drag on resources as he probably eats too much and would hunt/fish too little. And I've always hated being g called things like "little buddy".

The Howells simply bring the least to the table. They've got Ginger's same draw backs with the added issue of their ages and no familiarity with having do do anything hard or unpleasant.

Gilligan is just too weak of a link and he talks too much. Plus I feel like he's the kind of guy who might somehow manage to get you and him killed in a survival situation.

Whew! Around the world in a few minutes! Smoke em if you got em folks.

Agreed, but Ginger's a 10 on the high maintenance scale whereas Mary Ann is probably a 2. Plus, there's this:

Absolutely. There is a version starring Kris Kristofferson as Jesse James and also stars Johnny Cash and features David Alan Coe in a fairly prominent role. It's actually a lot better than it sounds. Kristofferson of course carries his part well even if part of it is just the fact that hes Kris Kristofferson. Cash is far from great but this is actually the closest I've ever seen him come to real acting even if he is miscast. And DAC actually does ok.

There are some others that are just awful. There is one with Rob Lowe as Jesse James. :? And I believe the recently dearly departed Bill Paxon as Frank. There's even another one with Brad Pitt as Jesse and another one that is so bad it will hurt your feelings which features Colin Farrell as Jesse and Scott freaking Kahn as Cole Younger.

The Great Northfield Minnesota Raid has one of my favorite lines from any of these. The gang is separated and some of them have decided to hole up in a house. Bob Younger is shot up and not doing well. One of them tells Cole Younger Jesse thought they needed to light out and leave Bob there. Cole responds, "Bob ain't dead, Jesse aint here, and we ain't goin."

In other words, not very versatile, whereas Mary Ann is a farm girl.

That, too. Even more important in favor of Mary Ann. And if you had to go back in time to an all-day outdoor concert in the mid-seventies, you could carry Mary Ann piggy back a lot longer than Ginger.

In the Gilligan's Island universe, if you don't prepare for it, it will happen. The S.S. Minnow's sister ship, the S.S. Guppie, is equipped with every safety, rescue, and navigational device known to mankind and has been in continuous operation for over sixty-five years without a day of unplanned downtime. And you've never heard of it, have you? So it just goes to show.

I may have a slight bias for farm girls, but I've never understood how Mary Ann vs. Ginger was even a debate.
