Worst "hire" in the history of College Football
Not even close. In 1983 we turned down Bill Snyder and hired Jim Criner.

Likewise.
It's actually family values hypocrites and big time college sports for me, not just the SEC.

For worst non-hire, I'll nominate Bama turning down Bobby Bowden to hire Bill Curry.

Wasn't there someone they wanted ahead of Saban as well?

Rich Rodriguez had accepted the job at Bammer and then reneged and they hired Saban. Oh how history could have been different. Saban is the worst thing to happen to the SEC.

As for worst screw ups on hire and no hire. Steve Spurrier wanted to the job at UGA when Vince Dooley retired. We hired Ray Goff. Spurrier would later Nick name him Ray Goof and spent his entire career path g us back for not hiring him instead.

Curry played for The Bear. There was a period where they didn't want anyone who wasn't connected to Bryant somehow.

I somehow had no idea about the Spurrier/UGA thing. For opposing team coaches, I always liked Spurrier in spite of/because of his press conference comments, not to mention his visor-throwing and backing up his talk with touchdowns. Gene Stallings is the only Bama coach ever that I couldn't help but kinda like. After I got over Les Mile's crazy wins despite bad play calls/clock mismanagement, I liked him too. I hated to see Miles fired, but I think "the new" Orgeron could be a good fit personality-wise at LSU.

If Spurrier wasn't talking about your team or your coach, he was hilarious. But he HATED us. Not just because we were too dumb to hire him and went with a likeable but feckless first time head coach whose only reason for getting the job was being a member of the good old boy network. But also for what happened to him as a player his senior year. Spurrier's senior year at FU (yes I typed it that way on purpose) he was in the the thick of his Heisman campaign and quarterbacking an undefeated team rolling into the UGA game.

We had a tough as nails defense that year lead by tough old boy from Cairo (pronounced Cay-row) Georgia named Bill Stanfill. Stanfill was a defensive end and having grown up down on the Georgia/Florida border, he hated FU. Everything about them.

During that game Spurrier was sacked multiple times and Stanfill got him three times himself. Recalling the game Stanfill said, "Every time we would hit Spurrier he would scream to the officials 'Late hit! late hit! Late hit!'. I told him, 'I didnt mean to step on the hem of your dress Stevie' Spurrier's whining reminded me of helping my daddy castrate pigs on the farm." Lol.

That was the loan blemish on an otherwise perfect senior year for Spurrier and he never forgot it.

But I always loved it when he directed his little zingers at other teams. Talking about Tennessee when Fulmer was there, "Well you can't spell Citrus Bowl without the UT." Lol.

I'm with you on Les Miles. Couldn't stand him for a long time. He would make the most idiotic decisions and somehow, some way, fall backwards into success. But the nutty, no sensical things he would say along with etc eventually made me like him in spite of myself. He was hilarious and I'm not sure if he was just really weird or a comic genius. I like Orgeron too. He seems like a good guy and he's funny. Man I'm ready for some football!

Definitely both.

Me too, but cautiously. The "experts" keep talking about Stidham, but we've suffered enough to know better with KIehl Frazier and Jeremy Johnson as well as a Sean White who is great healthy, but often playing hurt.

At this point considering the last 10 years in the AU/UGA series, it's pretty close for me on who I'd rather get a win over this year between Bama and UGA if I had to pick one.

Neither team deserved to win that one.

But there have been some very painful losses for both against each other over the years. I started to list a couple, but we both know them.

Yeah no doubt.

Also, I agree with you on Gene Stallings. Very good football coach and a class guy all the way. Truly shameful how his separation with Bammer went down.

You know, I find the mis-dial story believable, given the circumstances: A 313 area code misdialed while in an 813 area? That could happen. So it's possible they found something else in his phone records while investigating this. Oh, and Houston Nutt is a snake I'm glad Arkansaw is rid of.

Freeze may very well have misdialed. Like you said, that could happen. But there is no doubt he is as crooked as they come. I'm no class warrior and I'm all for people being able to make a lot of money. But this kind of thing became rampant when coach salaries got so big.

I had assumed it was more than just one call to that number (and I'm too lazy to look it up). If it was just one call, I wonder if they could see the duration of the call. A one-minute call dialed one time could be a wrong number. A 19 minute call is a different story.

I believe the story said the duration of the call was under a minute. I'm not saying he wasn't calling whores in every town and village. Just that the story says they found one suspicious call not sufficient for disciplinary action, then went looking through the records and found something. What that something was, they didn't say.

It was one call and the call was very brief, I believe less than 30 seconds. That's what was reported on Memphis sports talk radio on Friday.

I really don't watch it that much. I watch replays of games this time of year to ease my college football dt's. And once the season starts I watch if our game is being shown there or if there is a particularly interesting game being shown. A lot of the second and third tier games end up there usually and I might watch while I'm waiting on another game to start or to see a player I've been hearing about on a team that's not on TV lot (Vanderbilt, Kentucky).

I can not stand Paul Finebaum. I hate his idiotic show with his pro wrestling promo callers screaming at each other.

I truly believe that Paul Finebaum being made the face of the SEC Network is ESPN's middle finger to Southern football fans. They minimized wins by SEC teams over BigWeCantCount teams and west coast teams for years. But after an SEC team won the NC every year for seven straight they were in a corner for something like the SEC Network. But they didn't have to like it. So we got Paul Finebaum. "We have to give you rednecks your own college football network? Well we are going to put the most unhinged among you front and center with this Jerry Springer of college football being the face of the network and his show getting a prime slot.

ESPN couldn't shove Southern football's cock further down its throat. From what I gather on ESPN, college football doesn't exist outside the South.

I think they push Finebaum because people outside the south like to watch his show to confirm their negative biases. It's good for ratings, apparently.

I totally get why you hate it, but I think that's precisely why they do it.

This is a fascinating point of view. You, as a southern football fan, feel assailed by ESPN, while those of us up north feel like ESPN is kissing the SEC's ass at every turn.

I get the network and others like them as far as live sports go, whether it be watching "your team" (generic your and you throughout) when the game's not on a traditional national network, or a second level team that's of more interest to you than whatever else might be on, or nothing else might be on, or watching less popular sports because it's your sport or your school, etc etc. The part that is hard to understand FOR ME is watching replays of games in general and in particular games that were of no special import the first time, watching spring practice, etc.

I agree with you beantownbubba but it's no different to me than baseball fans who watch spring training games on TV and even make a vacation out of traveling to FL or AZ to watch their team play in spring training. I can think of at least one friend who goes to FL to watch the Yankees during spring training.

I get this as a fan/vacation experience, but sure watching the games as if they're real falls into the same category as above.

I'd say that at this point, ESPN's financial commitment to the SEC has lead to it's propping of the league. ESPN has a vested interest in SEC dominance, so they're going to drive that narrative as much as possible.
