If that happened, interest in the regular season would go way down because its importance would go down.Iowan wrote:8 teams needs to happen.
I disagree. It's still only a 12 game season, and an 8 game playoff would mean that winning the conference would all but guarantee you a playoff spot.Bill in CT wrote:If that happened, interest in the regular season would go way down because its importance would go down.Iowan wrote:8 teams needs to happen.
See: What has happened to the college hoops regular season since the tournament has expanded to 64 (and now 68) teams.
No but that's a different sport that plays far more games per season.Zip City wrote:I disagree. Has your interest in baseball diminished because of the wildcards?
The only reason that you think college hoops has gone downhill is because you watch women’s basketballBill in CT wrote:If that happened, interest in the regular season would go way down because its importance would go down.Iowan wrote:8 teams needs to happen.

Really went out on a limb there, didn’t you. 12 of the 20 teams picked for the playoffs so far have been Alabama, Clemson & Oklahoma. 8 teams might at least offer some varietyBill in CT wrote:My playoff predictions:
Alabama beats Oklahoma
Clemson beats Notre Dame

March Madness makes no objective tie in to the regular season. If you placed automatic bids with conference regular season champs you instead of tournament champs, it would have a different feel.Bill in CT wrote:If that happened, interest in the regular season would go way down because its importance would go down.Iowan wrote:8 teams needs to happen.

The 9 team is like the 65th in basketball. They can argue they were better than 8, but that’s about it.Bill in CT wrote:No but that's a different sport that plays far more games per season.Zip City wrote:

Would they still have conference title games if they changed to an 8-team playoff? If so, teams who play in those games and in the national championship game would be playing 16 games per season.
Before long, fans of the number 9 team would be howling with outrage that the playoff needs to expand to 16 teams. It would absolutely happen.
Agreed. The regular season in NCAA Basketball is rendered meaningless by the conference tourneys, not the NCAA Tourney.Iowan wrote:March Madness makes no objective tie in to the regular season. If you have 8 teams comprised of the P5 champs and 3 pageant winners, the regular season is still massive.
It's probably 8-10 years away, but its going to happenBill in CT wrote:According to this article, an expansion to 8 teams is not currently being considered.

First time we've played in a New Year's Day bowl since PSU beat us in the Outback Bowl in 1998. I'd love to make the trip for this one, but we just took the kids to Disney a little over a month ago, so it's just feasible to make that trip again so soon. Should be a good one, hope our defense shows up like it has all year. If not, might be a long day for the Cats.Clams wrote:Penn State vs Kentucky in the citrus bowl. Where's rlipps?
It's not March Madness, it's the "One & Done" bullshit. I used to be a huge college hoops fan - going to an ACC school in the early 80s would do that to anyone - but now the players leave so damn quickly it's difficult to establish a team identity. And much less enjoyable, I would add.Bill in CT wrote:“Why March Madness is bad for college basketball”

FWIW, "one and done" is an NBA policy, not a college basketball policyFlea wrote:It's not March Madness, it's the "One & Done" bullshit. Dude is 100% garbage. I’d have more respect if he just came out and said what he believes: Urban Meyer doesn’t give a fuck what any of his coaches do to women if said coaches can help him win footbaww games. What’s a little collateral damage when it comes to footbaww?
