Kirk Herbstreit is advocating that 2 loss Georgia, who didn’t win their conference, be ranked third ahead of undefeated Notre Dame and 1 loss OU and tOSU (who are both conference champs).

But I’m a crazy person and ESPN doesn’t have a shockingly open SEC bias....

Memphis played a highly entertaining first half of football. Unfortunately for them the game is 60 minutes long.

If you wrote a script of the Jalen Hurts story Hollywood would reject it as being too unbelievable. You gotta love sports.

4sooner's season long scouting rept was right on the money: If OK's defense was merely average that might well be an historic quality team.

Once again, and shocking absolutely nobody, an 8 team playoff would include everyone who should be in w/ only minimal noise from #9. To be clear my 8 would be AL, Clemson, ND, OK, OSU, UCF, GA, who cares but probably MI. Iowan, you had to know the GA noise was coming but man it will be a shame if it carries the day.

While I don’t think Georgia deserves to be in the playoff, I do think they’re one of the 4 best teams. I agree that a 2 loss non-conference champion shouldn’t be in, but I also think that Notre Dame has the weakest resume of a playoff team since Florida State the 2nd time they made it. I also wish the committee would punish Notre Dame for not playing in a conference championship, but unfortunately there aren’t enough teams this year with much of an argument ahead of them.

If it was up to me, I would say 1. Alabama 2. Clemson 3. Oklahoma 4. Notre Dame (so we can see Notre Dame quickly and entertainingly dispatched), but I’m afraid ND gets the 3 spot.
Turn it up to 10 and rip off the knob

If that happened, interest in the regular season would go way down because its importance would go down.
See: What has happened to the college hoops regular season since the tournament has expanded to 64 (and now 68) teams.

I disagree. It's still only a 12 game season, and an 8 game playoff would mean that winning the conference would all but guarantee you a playoff spot.

Has your interest in baseball diminished because of the wildcards?

No but that's a different sport that plays far more games per season.

Would they still have conference title games if they changed to an 8-team playoff? If so, teams who play in those games and in the national championship game would be playing 16 games per season.

Before long, fans of the number 9 team would be howling with outrage that the playoff needs to expand to 16 teams. It would absolutely happen.

The only reason that you think college hoops has gone downhill is because you watch women’s basketball

Really went out on a limb there, didn’t you. 12 of the 20 teams picked for the playoffs so far have been Alabama, Clemson & Oklahoma. 8 teams might at least offer some variety

March Madness makes no objective tie in to the regular season. If you placed automatic bids with conference regular season champs you instead of tournament champs, it would have a different feel.

If you have 8 teams comprised of the P5 champs and 3 pageant winners, the regular season is still massive.

I think Bama is a more complete team than OU, but OU’s offense is good enough to go the distance with them. I give OU about a 45% chance to win.

I see Clemson routing Notre Dame. ND deserves the nod by virtue of their undefeated season, but their SOS is weak, and I think Ohio State and Georgia are probably better on their best days. But that’s irrelevant because they both lost important games they could and should have won.

The 9 team is like the 65th in basketball. They can argue they were better than 8, but that’s about it.

8 with 5 conference champs gives an objective accomplishment that can’t be disputed. Objectivity is what is so desperately lacking right now.

Agreed. The regular season in NCAA Basketball is rendered meaningless by the conference tourneys, not the NCAA Tourney.

According to this article, an expansion to 8 teams is not currently being considered.

First time we've played in a New Year's Day bowl since PSU beat us in the Outback Bowl in 1998. I'd love to make the trip for this one, but we just took the kids to Disney a little over a month ago, so it's just feasible to make that trip again so soon. Should be a good one, hope our defense shows up like it has all year. If not, might be a long day for the Cats.

It's not March Madness, it's the "One & Done" bullshit. I used to be a huge college hoops fan - going to an ACC school in the early 80s would do that to anyone - but now the players leave so damn quickly it's difficult to establish a team identity. And much less enjoyable, I would add.
Now it's dark.

FWIW, "one and done" is an NBA policy, not a college basketball policy

UK's Josh Allen won the Bronko Nagurski Award, given to the nation's top defensive player. It was the first time in school history someone has won the award. Very happy for the kid, was originally a Monmouth commit, instead came to UK as a 2-star prospect and is now projected as a top 5 to 10 pick.

I am floored that his agent even allows him to open his mouth at this point, because it seems to get worse and worse every time he makes a weak attempt at defending himself.
I foresee another heart attack scare, leading him to “spend more time with his family” (nudge nudge wink wink) until the Notre Dame job is available
Called it, though I fully expected it to happen in season
