As a Longhorn, I'm happy with the (deserved) inclusion of Texas. I can't argue that the best four teams are in, but I do think the committee screwed up.

1) Not including FSU. Undefeated with a similar resume as the rest of the field. Come on. Have the stones to leave out the SEC. I get that they aren't the same team after an injury, but they did win. It's unfair and reeks of the real reason behind the decision - money. I feel bad for all those young men who did what they needed to do, only to get hosed in the end.

2) Why not rank UW #1? It would put them in the Rose Bowl to end the Pac-12, they have at least as good a resume as Michigan...and if the "eye test" matters so fucking much, maybe the "admitted cheater" test should too?

I'm not enough of a fan to be able to debate the relative merits of all the potential finalists, so my comments are more top level. And at that top level, 2 things stand out:

Worst from my perspective is that the Committee essentially blamed a 23 year old kid for a whole team/university not getting into the playoff which is fucking outrageous and beyond unfair and that's before considering that at bottom the kid is being blamed for getting hurt. Did I say fucking outrageous? I'm not sure that covers it. I thought that immediately but it was reconfirmed when I saw that Travis apologized for not breaking his leg sooner so the Committee could have had more "data" with which to evaluate his team. That is beyond fucked up. These are responsible adults? Ummm, no.

Second, whatever the merits of each team's claim for inclusion, it's obvious from the way it played out that the governing "theory" was all about power/money, not football prowess. Whether you want to blame ESPN, the aura of Alabama, the SEC, tv ratings or whatever, I'm pretty sure it's not about football and while that's inevitable given the state of sports, broadcasting, money and colleges, it's still pretty damn sad and a breach of the responsibility to the game that was supposedly this committee's raison d'etre.

I also note that an 8 team playoff would solve this problem very neatly (assuming Oregon is the clear #8 which I suppose is not a given) and that a 12 team playoff would add nothing*, which is no doubt why we're getting a 12 team playoff in the future (the NCAA being pretty much guaranteed to come up w/ the wrong answer to pretty much any question).

*Admittedly a 12 team playoff would include all the 2 loss teams meaning there would presumably be no controversies at all, but at the cost of significantly diluting the playoffs, but I know that dilution has been discredited as a reason not to do it across most major sports.

Other than the teams in the playoff, it seems a lot of these teams are missing some of their best players from their bowl game because the players want to protect their draft status. A coach will often leave before their team's bowl game if he is taking a new job. Call me cynical, but why even play bowl games and why would a fan support a team for a whole season if that's how much it matters to coaches and players ?
I totally understand why players do it, but I don't like it.

Without blaming anyone (though you can probably guess who I blame) there's clearly a problem that needs fixing. As a Republican governor in MA, Charlie Baker had a rep as a minor miracle worker; time for him to step up to the world of big-time miracles and fix college football.
