even a bad outing that gave some indication they can squeeze one more start out of him before bringing ross back for good would have been enough. he probably even pitched himself out of a mop up role

Tonight against the Twins the White Sox started a totally Garcia outfield- Avisaíl in right, Leury in center, and Willy in left.

Reminds me of this all brother outfield, though they never started together.whatwouldcooleydo? wrote:Tonight against the Twins the White Sox started a totally Garcia outfield- Avisaíl in right, Leury in center, and Willy in left.

Fascinating. I have to give it a lot more study and thought to give an actual opinion.whatwouldcooleydo? wrote:The Save Ruined Relief Pitching. The Goose Egg Can Fix It.

Re: MLB 2017
Good stuff. I've been disappointed in some of Silver's recent writing (that I've read; don't keep up w/ all of it) but this is a return to form. No doubt he's diagnosed the problem correctly. I'm not the person most likely to figure out the strengths & flaws in his proposal but it does seem like he underweights the importance of stranding inherited runners - he gives it more weight than the current save stat which is good, but imho the balance of factors is not as good as it could be. In any case, it would be an improvement over the current situation and if widely adopted as meaningful I'm pretty sure it would improve bullpen usage in the big leagues.whatwouldcooleydo? wrote:The Save Ruined Relief Pitching. With Starling Marte suspended for 80 games I think Milwaukee is now the second best team in the NL Central (no I'm not worried about the Cubs' 7-7 start).

the Cards aren't what they've been in the past but do you really think they were/are the 4th or 5th best team in the central ?Tequila Cowboy wrote:With Starling Marte suspended for 80 games I think Milwaukee is now the second best team in the NL Central (no I'm not worried about the Cubs' 7-7 start).
they lost Holladay and gained Fowler...that's about all.

they've sucked on ice this year. They're unathletic. The bats have been cold but they aren't as bad as they've looked. Fowler had done NOTHING until today......I'm sure you were crazy about him last year.
I'm not trying to make a case for them being a top tier team in the NL or anything . They are way better than they've been playing though. We're also two weeks into the season...

Ruh roh. MadBum on the DL. You think these guys would stay off those damn bikes by now, wouldn't you?
Chris Sale is an early season monster for the Sox even though Craig Kimbrel robbed him of a win yesterday (and then got the win after the blown save in what of the stupider scoring rules out there).

at least Bumgarner didn't lie like Jeff Kent did when he injured himself on a dirt bike but claimed he hurt himself "washing his truck"

And Jon Lackey proves again what a fucking dick he is. I hope the Brewers put one between his numbers the next time he faces them.
Chris Bosio handled the situation well though.........not really.

Re: MLB 2017
From the description, the book is aiming at a very specific sweet spot and it sounds like the right one in the general marketplace. But my guess is that it will be too basic for the more regular contributors here and perhaps not basic enough for those who want to up the stathead side of the game. Writing about math, even applied baseball math, for the layman is no easy task. The excerpts make it sound like Law may be good at it, but it's hard to tell. OTOH, my measuring stick is Bill James who remains the master. Based only on that story, I'd put the book in the "I'll probably pick the book up eventually but I'm not gonna run out and buy it" category.whatwouldcooleydo? wrote:Smart Baseball Can Still Be Fun Baseball
