Only in Philadelphia

This forum is for talking about non-music-related stuff that the DBT fanbase might be interested in. This is not the place for inside jokes and BS. Take that crap to some other board.

Cortez died after the assault that happened around 2 a.m. Thursday at 1300 E. Passyunk Avenue.

Two other men, Cortez's 64-year-old father and his 28-year-old friend, suffered minor injuries and were treated at Thomas Jefferson University Hospital.

I don't think this could happen only in Philadelphia (it goes back at least to 1964 and the murder of Kitty Genovese in Queens), but still...

The Golden Corral fight, while a doozy, happened in Bensalem which is a Philly suburb and therefore does not belong in this thread! :geek:

Says the man known as "beantown" who lives in Newton! I was born and raised in the 19116, graduated from Philly public schools, worked in the city for 15 years... I'm bonafide!!

Nice. I actually didn't know (or remember) that you went to school in Philly.

Perhaps you will not be surprised that I think this is a complex issue that I have thought about a lot over time. I'll say more about this later because I like talking about the subject but for now I'll just say it's fairest to compare apples to apples: If you identify your "phillyness" as rooted in your early life then it's fair to distinguish the suburbs. If you think your kids are from philly, it seems to me it's a lot less fair to make that distinction when it's inconvenient.

As for me, for reasons I'll write about later, I think it's fair to refer to myself as "beantown" while living in the suburbs. However, on a more important level I consider myself to be a bubba "without a country" because I do feel uncomfortable saying I'm from Boston while at the same time it's harder and harder to meaningfully say I'm from Brooklyn.

So, as I was saying...

When I first moved to Boston (and yes I lived in Boston) I always stumbled trying to answer the rather basic question, "where are you from?" While I lived in Boston, I didn't feel like I was "from" there and while I felt like I was "from" Brooklyn, I no longer lived there. I settled on asking "do you mean where I live or where I'm from?" which sort of worked for a time but as Brooklyn continues to change so dramatically and quickly, even being "from" Brooklyn doesn't sound right even though it's true. That's why I feel such a sense of dislocation when I go back to Brooklyn - my roots are there and they are deep but it doesn't feel like home. Poseurs, hipsters and new arrivals of all sorts think that they are "the real Brooklyn" and since they actually live there, who am I to argue? OTOH, if you want to gain any actual or assumed insights into me/my character/my personality based on where I'm from, "Boston*" would be the more misleading, less helpful reply than "Brooklyn."

As to being "beantown" from Newton, look at the numbers. The population of the Boston MSA is right around 5 million people. The population of Boston is less than 700,000 people. Or put another way, not a lot of people from Boston actually live in Boston. This is a very common and well accepted form of conversation:

- Where are you from?
-Boston
- Oh yeah, what part?
- Newton (or Cambridge, Chelsea, Quincy, Medford and a whole bunch of other towns)

By contrast, this is a pretty awkward and not widely accepted conversation:

-Where are you from?
-New York
-Oh yeah, what part?
-Scarsdale

After a while I used to say that my kids are from Boston but I'm not. They were literally born in Boston but never lived there, but in the sense I'm trying to convey, they and everyone they know, thought of themselves as Bostonians. Now people from the classic pre-gentrified neighborhoods like Southie, Roxbury, Charlestown, etc might well have a problem with that but I think it's a pretty fair sense of the vernacular.

I suppose these things are less important in the days of increasing homogenization and mobility but for those of who feel it keenly (and I include Clams in that number) it's a very confusing time. Back in the day, all I had to do was to speak a couple of sentences and pretty much everyone could tell where I was from. These days, the Brooklyn has worn off, the Boston hasn't really taken, and very few people can place me by my accent. It doesn't exactly keep me up at night but I do think it's a little bit sad.

*Assuming that it is not wrong or misleading for me to say I'm from Boston in the first place.

This is a fucking disgrace I tell ya, and I'm not even a Flyers fan. Here is a guy who has played so far in a whopping 989 games in a row. The flyers are having one of the worst seasons in franchise history, at the bottom of the division and out of the playoffs. For the " franchise " to make this horrible decision to have Yandel sit as a healthy scratch is embarrassing to the Flyers fans and the league in general.
