Re: What's Everyone Drinking?
I was visiting some college buddies this weekend, and got fucked in half drunk. At one point yesterday I was drinking my victory High Life I had won off an annual bet with a buddy on the outcome of the Iowa/Iowa State game while celebrating the Cyclones' victory over #5 KU.
That was the tastiest High Life I've drank in years.

A big glass of water. Had my share of Grain Belts before the ISU/KSU basketball game.

Had this last night as part of Cortez and I's beer swap. Pretty solid. From my understanding, its more of a classic British IPA than an American IPA. The hop flavors were a little more subtle and the malt presence more noticeable. Would definitely be a good introduction to the genre for someone whose been told how bitter IPAs are and gun shy of the style.

Awesome! I try to pepper my posts with as much old Midwestern codger lingo as I can.

The 2nd part in Cortez's line up. I figured after a good morning run, some nourishing dopplebock would do the trick. Indeed it does.
Generally, dopplebocks are one of my least favorite styles of beer (I think they got too heavy/sweet a lot of the time), but this is great. Definitely some roasted malt flavors (like you would see in a dry stout), but you get that lager smoothness and noticeable hop dryness to balance things out. Plus, its 8% ABV. This ain't no Steel Reserve, homes.

Your last statement sums Trinity IPA up nicely. It is a very drinkable IPA that still maintains some kick - 7% ABV. Glad you enjoyed it.

Thomas Hooker Brewing Co. does a nice job. They are located in the next town over from me. They make some really cool seasonal beers - Nor'easter Lager (winter), Chocolate Truffle Stout (spring), Watermelon Ale (summer), and Octoberfest (fall). Their doppelbock has won some awards and provided a good opportunity to counterbalance the hop-driven beers included.

I noticed that the Hooker dopplebock got a Top 10 American beer award from the dudes at Beer Advocate. Obviously that's subjective as hell, but its a hell of a good beer.
Getting through the others today.

Halfway through the New England Buzz. Another traditional IPA. Very tasty. Has that biscuity-malt character you find in a good amber ale like Fat Tire, with a nice hop bitterness. I'm definitely noticing that the New England breweries take a more traditional British approach to the style than breweries in the Midwest/West, which makes a lot of sense from a cultural standpoint.

Bold, intense, and my favorite IPA out of this group this far. Avoids the typical Imperial/double IPA pitfall of being too sweet or malty. Good shit.
