Phelps has to be tops. That's a lot of dominance.

What about Bolt? Less events but doing things never done before minus Carl Lewis and the 100.

I would say Phelps is the greatest Olympian ever. He made the Olympic team at 15 (Sydney). He won 6 gold and 2 silver in Athens. He won 8 gold medals in Beijing. He won 4 gold and 2 silver medals in London.
Bolt is the greatest sprinter of all time...hands down. He owns the world record in both the 100 and 200 meter distances and is the only Olympian to do the double in 2 Olympics.
The reason the Russian gymnast wasn't considered the greatest of all time despite all her medals was the lack of competition in gymnastics back then. It wasn't a competitive sport with multiple countries at a high level (Russia, China, USA, Romania) like it is now. Swimming is a worldwide sport with gold medalists from North America, South America, Europe, Africa, Asia, and Australia. Phelps has been dominant in the sport in that context.
A good case can be made that Eric Heiden is the greatest Winter Olympian ever. He won gold medals in speed skating in 1980 at 500m, 1000m, 1500m, 5000m, and 10,000m. No one before or since has equaled that feat. Try to imagine a runner winning gold at 5 different distances in the same Olympics. The mind boggles.

I forgot that was an "event." I saw the emblem on the corner of the tv and made a crack that it was hula hooping. I don't remember the 1lb ball being part of "rhythmic gymnastics." Hell, I saw a hippie do the same thing juggling a glass ball on the lawn at Alpine Valley around '98 at the Allman Brothers.

You still gotta give it up for Frank Ricard's performance. Groundbreaking.

Hot tip: US & Spain men's basketball teams tied at 80 in the 3rd. Sounds like it's worth watching.

It was definitely worth watching. Fun game. Gold medal baby! I still find Coach K insufferable though.

The US Open men's final was staggeringly good. W/ very few totally understandable exceptions (given that the match lasted almost 5 hours) the quality of play, athleticism, competitiveness and mental toughness on display was everything one could wish for from sport played at the highest level. Fantastic. And congrats to Andy Murray for finally breaking through!!

Actually Bubba I think annhilating Federer in the Olympics final was the breakthrough for Murray, as well as getting to the doubles final (look what that did for Laura Robson at the US open).

I'm sure you're right as far as Murray's mental approach/attitude or confidence level goes, but there are 2 types of professional tennis players in the world: those who have won a grand slam title and those who haven't. The difference is huge in many ways.

I missed the final but the Murray quote about his toenail falling off in the 5th and turning black is crazy. Total conditioning, guts and determination by these guys.

Now that is what I call a proper comeback. On Saturday night I thought it was all over; usually the Europeans are better at the fourballs/foursomes and the US better in the singles. Shows you what I know.

Yeah, well at 10-6 w/ a full slate of [American] football on tap, I didn't even bother to turn the Ryder Cup on. Boy, was i surprised.

And how about those Tottenham Hot Spurs taking it to ManU in Manchester? :D

The Spurs beating Man U was beautiful. I sure hope Chelsea has the same luck when I'm in London next month. I was lucky enough to get my hands on a ticket to the match thanks to a season ticket holder who I know from another music board.

Just wondering what kind of party Lebron is going to throw Liverpool, since he promised them one. Maybe a relegation party. Gunner for life!

Complete idiots. Apparently a 50/50 deal submitted today by Bettman to salvage 82 game season.

Would have liked to have seen that. I assume it'll be on re-runs or netflix or something(?)

And in other other sports news, does anyone remember the NHL? Mind blowing what they've done.

Yeah, that caught my eye earlier today.

I especially love the part about how her husband knew about it but wasn't at all supportive.

Very cool image of Everest... I have spent about an hour just checking out the details.

The next link (below) takes you to a 360 view of Khumbu Glacier. Clicking on the image provides control to zoom and move around. Zooming in you can see all the various base camps in the foreground edge of the glacier tail. The pixel detail let’s you follow climbers along the left edge of the glacier all the way to about half-way up the bowl in the background.
