The Neverending Thread for Political Shit

This forum is for talking about non-music-related stuff that the DBT fanbase might be interested in. This is not the place for inside jokes and BS. Take that crap to some other board.

Trump trying to goad Biden into saying something stupid is a bold strategy when Trump only says stupid things. Why does it matter if Biden spews nonsense if it doesn’t matter when Trump does it?

We’ll know soon. I can’t understand people who white knuckle to the idea that everyone they don’t like is stupid. I get not liking Orange Man. But he succeeded in construction which is pretty complicated and stressful on large projects. And he had his ups and downs but he has been in the game for a really long g time and is remarkably stress resistant. He had a hit reality show and while it’s tempting for everybody to think any idiot can do that I’m not so sure that’s true. And he won the presidency. So if someone is determined to think he’s stupid then I guess they have to explain all that with what? He’s just one of the luckiest people to ever live? Like I said, we will know soon about him and Biden. I personally think Biden is not only going to lose but lose badly but I might be completely wrong.

Actually, yeah, he is one of the luckiest people to ever live. Of course he has some positive attributes but mostly he’s stupid and lucky. And except for his tv show, the success of which I admit I don’t understand, most of his business “success” is chimerical.

Cole - this simply isn't true.

In private life, Trump has rarely actually BUILT anything. He typically licenses his name to buildings and retains management rights. As for succeeding, you can reference his half dozen bankruptcies. If you want to explore his success as a 'builder' as President, the record isn't much better. While he has had numerous chances, there has not been a significant Infrastructure bill passed during his tenure. Finally, if you turn to his signature construction promise, he has failed there as well. Only a handful of miles of new 'wall' have been constructed, and I don't want to startle you but Mexico didn't end up paying for it. ;)

He is a con-man and shouldn't be seen as anything else. Why he has been successful is certainly up for debate and luck should be a factor to consider. However, there just are not many human beings that have a fundamental lack of any form of empathy or shame. He is damn successful in wielding these personality flaws as a super power.

Let's talk about luck for a second.

Say you own a casino and against all, and I mean ALL, odds (see what i did there?) you're managing to run it into the ground. You've got a big loan payment due in a couple of days and you're sweating it out. What to do? What to do? Suddenly, a guy in a suit walks through the casino w/ a big briefcase. It appears to be heavy - he's leaning slightly to the side w/ the case. He walks right up to the cashier and asks to change his money into chips. The money keeps coming out of the suitcase, more and more, piles of it, until Thirty Five Million Dollars is passed through the window in exchange for chips. The suit packs the chips into the briefcase, turns around and walks out of the casino w/out placing a single bet. Phew! The answer to your prayers! $35 million dollars in cash falls into your lap and you can live to screw the banks another day.

Oh, the guy w/ the suit and the briefcase? He's a highly paid messenger boy from your father.

Someone ran the numbers a couple of years ago and discovered that Trump’s net worth would be much higher if he had simply invested the money he inherited in low yield bonds. Instead he danced around through failed ventures and several bankruptcies and ended up with...less? Is this winning? The successful businessman narrative holds no water.

Exactly. Trump's skills, or if you prefer, superpowers, are those of a conman. He's good at hucksterism, hyperbole, lying and, when he senses blood in the water, bullying. And because he has no shame there is no line he won't cross. Plus he has an unlimited fortune to cover all his many mistakes and to buy the loyalty he needs. He picked the perfect mentor in Roy Cohn, the perfect guide to succeeding in the scummy underbelly of the New York business world. And there you have it: The perfect combination of skills to appear to succeed in the cutthroat environment of New York real estate. He's had a couple of successes there, but he also grossly overpaid for The Plaza Hotel and ran it into the ground. The rest, as pearlbeer says, is mostly licensing and pretty much a 100% fail. See, e.g., Trump Steaks, Trump Airlines and whichever failed football league that was. Do we even need to mention yet again the debacle of his many casino failures and his adding insult to injury of burying any chance Atlantic City ever had of escaping its horrible fate? Then, when he was on the ropes and becoming irrelevant even in the New York celebrity world, just in time to save himself yet again he discovered the other place where being a lying, slimy conman is a feature not a bug: Reality television. And then he stumbled into the biggest con of all: Running for president. You don't need to win to raise your profile, become an A lister, get invited to the best parties, meet the really successful people who otherwise won't return your calls and permanently boost your brand. But then, whoops! There's a flaw in the plan: He actually fucking won. And the rest as they say is history.

True. But just to make sure we get the details right the comparison I've heard was to indexed (i.e. unmanaged) mutual funds that merely track the market. Either way it obviously reveals the "Trump the business success" myth for the joke, the con if you will, that it is.

Yes, the significance of that is inherent though. Indexes funds would be a safer bet than the evidence we have in how he handles his investments.

i'm glad we agree on those things, Cole. the problem is that they continue to happen. I mean, the reason some of these flashpoint issues have stirred up violence is that they were recorded. how many instances don't go recorded, now or in the past?

again i am not condoning violence, but i think i can understand at least a little bit of what's fueled it. not sure if hillbillies have the same grievances to rise up as african-americans but if they do i will gather what info i can and decide if it's warranted or not.

One of the many mysteries of the Trump phenomenon is that working people somehow identify with him and think that Trump knows them, cares about them and represents their interests. This seems self evidently preposterous to me but let's say there are legit reasons for some people reacting this way on an emotional, visceral level even if not on a strictly rational basis. But then one comes to this unalterable fact: The one consistent way that Trump has found to make money is by stiffing working people. We're not talking one or two examples, or even one or two dozen. Hundreds? Not even close. We are literally talking thousands of times.

One of the ways in which Trump may appear "smart" but is actually merely cunning and immoral is that he simply counts on the desperation to be paid of the small contractors that any real estate business hires by the dozens are. He doesn't even really try to claim that there were problems w/ the work product. He just doesn't pay them and says "sue me." So you're a regular Joe who has done a $10K or $50K or $100K job for Trump. You've already paid for the supplies and you've paid your employees and subcontractors because you run a reputable business. Now Trump doesn't want to pay. Your $10K claim is effectively worth zero because you can't convince a competent lawyer to take on a case that small, so you settle for whatever Trump decides to pay. It could be zero, but let's say the man just had a good time w/ Stormy Daniels so he decides to throw you $1,500.

The 2 guys w/ the larger claims have a different calculation to make: They might be able to pay a lawyer to take the case or find one willing to do it on contingency but if you discount the claim by the amount of the legal fees (it doesn't matter for this purpose whether those fees are hourly or contingent), the time it takes to collect (and Trump can afford to spin things out forever) and the risk, however small, of losing the case and the value of your claim has just been halved, or more. Let's say you can settle for 40% of the original invoice. So that's $20K and $40K, respectively. Add up all 3 claims and Trump has just made $98,500 less whatever small amount it costs him to make the maneuvers to execute this strategy. You can look it up. This history is well, some might say excessively, documented. Now we're talking real money. Bankrupt a small business kind of money for just the kind of people who support Trump. And yet this doesn't seem to bother them.

Ten four. Yep. I’ve heard lots of them. And nobody here will get any argument from me that he’s an arrogant jackass who lies and loves the sound of his own voice. I just don’t agree that he’s the anti Christ. There’s plenty about him to not like. I just don’t get the constant grinding on him being the worst thing ever. He’s an asshole. He’s a liar. He’s arrogant. And I’m pretty sure he’s amoral. That could be just about anybody in Washington as far as I’m concerned. To want to be president, I won’t say you’ve got to be a narcissistic sociopath or maybe even a psychopath but I’ll just about say that. It sure helps anyway.

As far as whether or not Orange Man is as great as he thinks he is or says he is in terms of what he’s done in life I really don’t care to be honest. Barak Obama was a one term senator and it was like he was Jesus himself when he got elected. Before anybody goes there I’m not saying Orange Man and Obama are twins or anything.

This is the fundamental problem with our system of government today and it's pretty hard to get around. Just like I wouldn't want to join any club that would have me as a member, I do not trust anyone who wants to be president. Or senator. I'm a little more equivocal on reps, but there's not much joy there either. In words of smaller syllables that I understand better, you've got to be nuts to want to be president and you've got to have a rather distorted view of yourself and the world to think you can make the kind of impact on the world that every presidential candidate promises.

Trumpers don't care one bit about his past or the things he says and does. All they care about is swinging the pendulum back from the Obama days to their own values and beliefs. Or as others have said, "sticking it to the libs." Nothing else matters to them.

This sounds too much like "They hate us for our freedoms" for my tastes. It may be true but it doesn't really explain.

I'm not sure why this has been on my mind so much the past day or 2, but it has so I thought I'd share, for whatever it's worth.

Shortly after my older son graduated HS in 2005, my wife and I totally unexpectedly got a thank you card from one of our son's good friends. The friend was not one of our son's couple of best friends but he was part of the "main group" of good friends that was together from middle school thru HS. He's African-American. To this day I count this note as one of the most wonderful I have ever received and also easily the saddest (outside of family tragedy-related).

The friend actually thanked us for treating him normally. For allowing him to feel comfortable when he was at our house. For inviting him to stay for dinner if he was around at dinner time and including him in the conversation around the table. For including him when we took the kids for ice cream. For looking him in the eye and sharing pleasantries, or asking how he was doing. And for not following him around the house as if we expected him to steal the family heirlooms as soon as we turned our backs. To say we were shocked understates the case considerably. We had no idea that he felt this way about his overall experiences or that we had affected him to that extent. Obviously we were glad to be a positive in his life, but holy cow, folks, this was Newton, Massachusetts in the 21st century!

Newton's an interesting place in many ways in part because it is unusually large and unusually close to the big city for a standard suburb. But in other ways it fits the MA stereotype pretty well. I'm certain that right now there are more black lives matter lawn signs around the city than there are combined signs for Trump, Biden and Markey (I literally I don't know who the R candidate for Senate is; he or she is the equivalent of Mr. Irrelevant in the NFL draft). Newton has one of the oldest and biggest programs for bringing inner city kids to the Newton schools and the program is oversubscribed every year (to be clear our son's friend lived in Newton and was not part of that program). Newton has an actual (as opposed to lip service) commitment backed by cash money to retaining and adding affordable housing. The city is unique in my experience in that religiously it is divided incredibly equally into thirds: Catholic, Protestant and Jewish. There is now a Muslim presence but it is fairly new and small.

Our son, mostly on his own motion w/out our prodding has been involved in anti-racist activities at least since middle school. He would not be friends with an obviously racist person and none of his friends, or their parents, seem racist to me by the typical casual standards we tend to apply to such judgments. And yet, we got that note. And yet, his experience was obviously far from how any of us white folks imagined it, if we bothered to think about it at all. Just sayin'.
