from the article:

All of these representatives are Republican. The highest ranked Democrat in the House is Sanford Bishop, who ranks 41st in career donations from the N.R.A. Among the top 100 House recipients, 95 are Republican. In the Senate, the top two Democrats are Joe Manchin of West Virginia and Patrick Leahy of Vermont, who rank 52nd and 53rd — behind every Republican but Dan Sullivan of Alaska.

Just voted. Mostly city and county stuff here. A few state wide propositions.

I just can't fucking believe what happened a year ago today.

Trump says that this shooting is "a mental health problem at the highest level," and that "We have a lot of mental health problems in our country."

So how does one square that with H.J. Res 40, which rolled back an Obama-era regulation that made it harder for people with mental illnesses to purchase a gun?

So much for that Republican talking point that says we just need to enforce the laws already on the books.

And I know you believe that, and I believe that and when you hear the secular left doing this thing, it’s no wonder you have so much polarization and disunity in this country when people think like that.”

I put this in this thread as a "file under culture wars" thing. Can you imagine anyone even proposing a program like this in the US?
Heard about this a while back. There has been similar things in the past as well. Files under "education", but no doubt helps with the ratings as well. With regards to the Culture thing, over here, the Danes are the ones supposed to be the frivolous in this department.

And I can assure you, no change of plans for HC for me as a result of this.

Yep. Just voted here, all local and all the text book version of democracy: Lawn signs, good govt propositions (I disagreed w/ the main one, but still...), write in candidates (one of whom I voted for and is expected to win), names you know, all that good stuff. And while I can't say that the usual thrill/buzz was totally absent, it was dialed way, way down to where I had to look for it to find it. Things ain't what they used to be, that's for sure. Damn.

Phew. Although I was already making plans to access the appropriate local Norwegian website.

more gold from Greg Abbott

the part I quoted below is around the 2:45 minute mark in the video

Remember, even though we are facing these severe tragedies whether it be what happened in Sutherland Springs, or what happened in Las Vegas, or what happened in New York last week or what happened in London earlier this year, we have acts of evil that are taking place and because they are close in time to us right now we think this is something heavy right now. But put this in the context of history.

Look at what happened with Hitler during the horrific events during that era, and Mussolini and go back in time before that to the earlier ages, the Middle Ages, when people committed horrific crimes, and when you go back through the history of the Bible, there was evil that took place from earliest stages of the Bible to post-New Testament, so evil is something that has permeated this world. And that force of evil must be combated with the force of good that is offered by God and it is so heartwarming to see the people of this community turn to God, turn to hope, turn to the promise of good overcoming evil

to paraphrase the Hollies: this ain't heavy, it ain't Hitler

I would've gone with "Thoughts and prayers to all the Republican politicians who lost their seats today. But now is not the time to talk about."

Held against the contrast to last November 8th, I'm downright giddy. Maybe it's just backlash that will have leveled off by next year, but the local, state and national outcomes gave me a much needed taste of hope.

Granted, every candidate/proposition I voted for on that ballot won.

this is the way you do it: she ran a campaign focused on things that actually mattered to her potential constituents- apparently traffic congestion was a major issue- while Marshall resorted to smears, referred to her with male pronouns, and refused to ever be in the same room with her. Sounds like Marshall was the one practicing identity politics, and he got his ass whooped for it

At least according to my FB feed (which is the only place I've seen it), it turns out that Danica wasn't even the only transgendered person to win election yesterday. In a presumably small town called Doraville (I've never heard of it; don't know if it's named after the famous explorer) in GA, the self-identified openly transgender Stephe Koontz was elected to the city council.

you don't remember this one from ARS (The Boys from Doraville)?

While dozens of Republicans in Washington are calling on Moore to step aside if the allegations are true, Republicans in Alabama don’t think the story will resonate the same way for voters. Instead, they focused on the timing of the allegations, which come just four weeks before the election.

Paul Reynolds, the Republican National Committeeman from Alabama, told The Hill that something about the timing of the accusation and the Post’s role breaking the story “doesn’t smell right.”

“My gosh, it's The Washington Post. If I’ve got a choice of putting my welfare into the hands of Putin or The Washington Post, Putin wins every time,” he said.

“This is going to make Roy Moore supporters step up to the plate and give more, work more and pray more."

I feel compelled to note that Abraham did NOT do it. And the rest as they say is history since arguably all of Western civilization flows from that moment.
whatwouldcooleydo? wrote:I can't get over how these assholes- including you, Gov. Abbott- talk about the bible like it's a history book
I hear that but their misuse, abuse, misunderstanding and misinterpretation of the historical aspects of the Bible doesn't bother me nearly so much as the misuse, abuse, misunderstanding and misinterpretation of the lessons and meaning of the Bible. I am sorry. There is simply no possible way that the story of Joseph and Mary can be interpreted as permitting, much less endorsing, sexual molestation and pedophilia. It. Just. Can't. I would think the entire Christian community would be shouting "sacrilege" from the rooftops but maybe that just goes to show how little I understand of Christianity. But whatever the case, I'm drawing a line in the sand: The story of Mary and Joseph as history, allegory, metaphor or myth does not stand for the proposition that it's ok to molest young girls. And the asshole who says it does should be fucking stoned. In the biblical sense.

Wait a second, I thought the whole plot of the Jesus story depended directly on the fact that Joseph and Mary didn't fuck.
