Interesting article. This is where I live, and I know several of the folks quoted. This pretty well gets what I've observed

Brett J. Talley, President Trump’s nominee to be a federal judge in Alabama, has never tried a case, was unanimously rated “not qualified” by the American Bar Assn.’s judicial rating committee, has practiced law for only three years and, as a blogger last year, displayed a degree of partisanship unusual for a judicial nominee, denouncing “Hillary Rotten Clinton” and pledging support for the National Rifle Assn.
On Thursday, the Senate Judiciary Committee, on a party-line vote, approved him for a lifetime appointment to the federal bench.
Talley, 36, is part of what Trump has called the “untold story” of his success in filling the courts with young conservatives.

Re: The Neverending Thread for Political Shit
This dynamic has the potential to play out in some interesting ways. I think its clearly true that Trump has had and will continue to have great success in filling the federal judiciary w/ a combination of conservatives from the most conservative end of the "normal" spectrum and nominal conservatives who are actually completely unqualified nut jobs because in this cause he and the Senate are totally in sync. As noted these are lifetime appointments and the Administration is clearly looking for and finding young candidates who will be around for a long time.whatwouldcooleydo? wrote:http://www.latimes.com/politics/la-na-p ... story.html

In at least one scenario this will force the other side, whether that continues to be the Dem Party or some other forces like single issue groups or grassroots alternatives to the major parties, to do one or both of 2 things: Go the legislative route to get what they want or, to some extent depending on the specific issue(s), work through state courts and legislatures. This of course raises the stakes of House and Senate races (and the general attempt to reverse the gerrymandering effect of the past couple of decades) well beyond simply wanting to bust up the Republican hegemony. If it plays out this way I think it could be a very good thing for the country. It seems that most times the law of unintended consequences bites you in the ass but sometimes it can be your friend.
What used to be is gone and what ought to be ought not to be so hard

For those keeping score, Trump believes Putin when Vlad says Russia didn't meddle in the 2016 election, but Brennan, Comey, Clapper et. al are liars and "political hacks."
PRESIDENT TRUMP: He just -- every time he sees me, he says, "I didn't do that." And I believe -- I really believe that when he tells me that, he means it. But he says, "I didn't do that." I think he's very insulted by it, if you want to know the truth.

Brett J. Talley, the young lawyer nominated by President Trump for a lifetime federal judgeship in Alabama, was asked by a Senate committee to disclose family members who are likely to present potential conflicts of interest if he is confirmed.
In response, Talley said he would evaluate “real or potential conflict, or relationships that could give rise to appearance of conflict” and recuse himself from cases if necessary, according to a Senate Judiciary Committee questionnaire.
He did not, however, identify any family members — including his wife, who is one of President Trump’s attorneys. Annie Donaldson is White House Counsel Donald McGahn’s chief of staff.

holy shit! not sure if this is the appropriate thread for this. There has been a deadly school shooting in Corning, CA, which is just up the road from Chico and even closer to where Bovine Knievel lives in Red Bluff

I'm not going to talk about gun control because it's too soon. I'm going to wait for the issue to begin to fade away until next week's mass shooting, at which time it will be too soon to talk about gun control

We have a friend who teaches in the school system where the shooting was today, though at a different school. She texted this to me:
"the wife of one of my colleagues is a kindergarten teacher there. Bullets came through her classroom windows. 2 kids were hit, I think 1 was killed."
ETA: just show a press conference with the Tehama County Sheriff and he said that, at the moment, no kids have died

Finding it very difficult to take the long view these days. Every generation seems to think that the world is falling apart in their time. But, I swear, the world is really falling apart.
