The Neverending Thread for Political Shit

This forum is for talking about non-music-related stuff that the DBT fanbase might be interested in. This is not the place for inside jokes and BS. Take that crap to some other board.

In the wake of David Brooks's remarkably misguided appeal in yesterday's NYT for gun control advocates to be more respectful and civil, today we have Wayne LaPierre of the NRA foaming at the mouth. The man actually referred to the possibility of Democrats winning control of the House, Senate or White House as "seizing control of the government." This is not merely frightening, it's sick. It's a repudiation, a disavowal of democracy and a justification for an actual autocratic takeover of the government.

LaPierre of course picked up a tweeted endorsement from Trump this morning, too, though it's not clear if it was in response to LaPierre's speech.

Vaguely reminiscent of the classic line from the Godfather: In Sicily the women are more dangerous than shotguns.

We watched the entire thing. I think you are being diplomatic with respect to Rubio, I thought he took a beating, continually wilting whenever pressed on an issue, especially when the student asked if he would continue to take NRA money. That question really brought out ol' Little Marco

This week has been such a journey through the past (the times they are-a changin' back). In all of the furor after the shooting in Florida, people like LaPierre and Jack Kingston have dusted off such rightwing evergreens as blaming Karl Marx, rap music. video games, Hollywood, and lack of school prayer

There is a subset of people who have always been around, but whose insane ideas were mostly kept in check. They were shamed when they spoke up, and so they kept to themselves or socialized on websites or chat groups. That phrase caught my eye because I've been ever since I heard that the crowd at CPAC was chanting "lock her up" I've been trying to get a grip on it. Assuming that convention attendees are a reasonable proxy for Republican voters and a better than reasonable proxy for Trumpists (Trumpets? Trumpettes?), these folks won. Their guy is the president, their party controls both houses. Yet they take up this chant, referring to the candidate that lost 16 months ago, as if they were powerless. My tentative conclusion is that they have become professional victims, exactly what they accused "welfare queens" and minorities in general of being for decades. I find this totally in keeping w/ the current environment which is to say totally bizarre.

Yes, they are perpetual victims. Good call on that one, Bubba. They aren't idiots and demographically they see their time to shape this country is on borrowed time so they take the approach that they're persecuted in order to enact policy of their choosing before they actually become minorities. Fear is their tool and it's frankly the only one available to them. A friend and I had a discussion two or three years ago talking about this and discussing just how dangerous a wounded, and potentially dying, beast really is. Today's "Grand Old Party" is proving our theory daily. I hate these fucking people.

IIRC, Thomas Frank spent considerable time on this perpetual victimhood in What’s the Matter with Kansas?, and that was written over 14 years ago

I've Never Been So Unimpressed By a Person In My Life

Samantha Fuentes, who was shot in both legs during the Parkland assault, said she had felt no reassurance during a phone call from the president to her hospital room last week.

He said he heard that I was a big fan of his, and then he said, ‘I’m a big fan of yours too.’ I’m pretty sure he made that up,” she said in an interview after being discharged from the hospital. “Talking to the president, I’ve never been so unimpressed by a person in my life. He didn’t make me feel better in the slightest.”

Ms. Fuentes, who was left with a piece of shrapnel lodged behind her right eye, said Mr. Trump had called the gunman a “sick puppy” and said “‘oh boy, oh boy, oh boy,’ like, seven times.”

Florida, you shithole

The state's House of Representatives approved the resolution by a voice vote Tuesday, despite some members asking why the topic is being taken up at this time. The resolution was sponsored by Rep. Ross Spano, who is running for attorney general.

During a debate, Rep. Carlos Guillermo Smith asked Spano if pornography has killed or physically injured anyone. He went one step further in asking Spano if pornography has caused any first responders to seek counseling.

Everyone can stop worrying about guns and mass shootings in schools because a Florida lawmaker has just introduced groundbreaking legislation that will surely be adopted by other areas throughout the nation and will definitely put a halt to gun violence.

According to CNN, Rep. Kimberly Daniels, a Democrat, pushed a bill requiring public schools to display the motto “In God We Trust,” saying that while gun violence is a problem, “issues of the heart” need addressing as well.

It is not a secret that we have some gun issues that need to be addressed,” Daniels said on the House floor Wednesday, CNN reports. “But the real thing that needs to be addressed are issues of the heart.”

Now I'm proud to say I ain't never been no violent man, but..... :x :x :x

President Trump claimed Monday that he would have rushed into the Florida high school during the mass shooting earlier this month there that killed 17 people, and he called it “disgusting” that an officer assigned to the school didn’t enter the building while the attack was underway.

I really believe I'd run in, even if I didn't have a weapon,” Trump said during a White House meeting with governors from across the country

I was thinking today, about the Dotard and the NRA and the Rs in general, calling the local police "cowards" and "failures", etc. You know, if those folks had been in the Military, I can't imagine our elected officials speaking like that.

Essentially, the President of the United States had a basement or late nite dorm room bullshit session with the nation's governors. It's an absurd statement to make - unprovable, macho, exactly the kind of thing one says after a few beers while shooting the shit w/ the guys. Which ought not to be a description of the President conducting official business!!! Throw in his history w/ bone spurs and draft dodging and the statement gains in absurdity what it loses in credibility and, as noted above, simply adds to our embarrassment (certainly not his, 'cause he doesn't know from embarrassment, unfortunately).

I know, I know, it's ridiculous of me to even think this much less say it, but you know there's still that spark struggling to stay lit somewhere deep inside. Basically the guy is declaring publicly that he has no interest in doing his job. He thought this legislation was good for GA, presumably still thinks that but won't vote for it based on considerations that have very little to nothing to do w/ GA and the scope of his job. Didn't he make an oath or something? Yeah, I know the legislation is probably a boondoggle and a rip off for GA taxpayers (don't know anything about the specifics but tax breaks intended to benefit primarily one company tend not to be in the public interest) but that doesn't change the analysis. One thing we can probably guess w/ confidence: The NRA gave more to his campaign than Delta did.

It is Wartime. Where is Our Rock’n’Roll?
http://www.realclearlife.com/music/109646/

This is really good. Some sacred cows slaughtered, but a great (and scary) read nonetheless.

"If you don’t start the revolution, it’s going to be started for you, and it will be started from the other side. It has already started. Someone is already building the gallows your freedoms of speech, movement, desire, and worship will hang from. See, the revolution, the one happening right now, was not just televised; it was everywhere, all at once, it became wallpaper, it became easy to ignore.

There will come a time, soon, after the neo-oligarchs take away your elections and stand under a cross while doing it, that you will wish that rock’n’roll had actually told the truth; you will desperately wish that the revolution you have been crowing about for fifty years hadn’t just been a painted backdrop at a high school production of Hair."
