This forum is for talking about non-music-related stuff that the DBT fanbase might be interested in. This is not the place for inside jokes and BS. Take that crap to some other board.

Speaking with reporters following a CIA briefing to select senators regarding Saudi Crown Prince Mohammed Bin Salman’s involvement in the assassination of journalist and U.S. resident Jamal Khashoggi, Sen. Lindsey Graham accidentally gave us a rare moment of political honesty:

I have great respect for [Secretary of State Mike Pompeo & Secretary of Defense Jim Mattis]. I would imagine if they were in a Democratic administration, I would be all over them for being in the pocket of Saudi Arabia. But since I have such respect for them I’m going to assume they’re being good soldiers.

Re-posted from FB. Can you tell I've about reached the end of my rope?

Time magazine has its famous person of the year cover but perhaps it's a sign of the times that I've been wondering who I'd award an "least person of the year" prize to. This year the competition is unfortunately stiff, but at least for me narrowing it down to just a couple was really easy (essentially, complete POS's like, say, Paul Manafort or Stephen Miller don't even rise to the level of being worth thinking about), and my 2 candidates qualify for the exact same reason: They know better which moves them from the merely horribly cynical to evil.

Runner up: Mitch McConnell, Republican senator from KY. In an ordinary year he'd be the runaway winner. But just as he differentiates himself by knowing better than his competitors, he's nowhere near as smart and knowing as the loser in chief.

Loser: Scott Walker, Republican about to be former governor of Wisconsin. The guy is literally willing to destroy the American system of government in a combination of pique, arrogance, sanctimony, cynicism, egomania (or maybe narcissism, pop psych is not my field) and evil seldom before seen in the United States among supposedly mainstream politicians. It breaks my heart because people like him make it impossible to save or improve the system because they just. don't. care and are unwilling to sacrifice the slightest perceived advantage for the common good. It's a fairly new phenomenon in this country and it's extraordinary. And like I said, he knows exactly what he's doing, even if he doesn't know how to draw a Venn diagram (and how embarrassing would that have been if the substance of what he was trying to do didn't overshadow his incompetence?)..

Dishonorable mention: Paul Ryan, retiring Republican Speaker of the House. I can't figure this guy out but best as I can tell he is an empty suit and pretty much an empty head who somehow built a reputation as a policy wonk and straight shooter simply by assembling a PR juggernaut, repeating the same descriptive words over and over and working out more than the typical politician. His ascent and epic fail are really extraordinary but it will take someone a lot smarter than me to work out what's really going on there.

Anybody else experiencing whiplash from the light speed at which the conventional wisdom on Nancy Pelosi has turned from "she's too old...she's a liability...she's too liberal...she generates way too much negativity from otherwise persuadable voters" to "now THAT's how you lead a political party...anybody who knows anything knows that she's the most effective Speaker in decades..." That's not a comment on either polarity, just an observation about how swiftly and how completely the narrative changed in a matter of a few days or a week.

Every once in a while, a “small” event occurs which seems to me to illustrate larger points in understandable, graspable ways, in contrast to a typical day in Washington, which tends to be beyond my comprehension. David Perdue’s op-ed in the WaPo the other day is one of those little moments.

https://www.washingtonpost.com/opinions ... nes&wpmm=1

Apparently Perdue, whom I’ve never heard of before, is a United States Republican Senator from Georgia. Somebody must think that he’s got national potential since it appears that he was designated to respond to Mitt Romney’s icky, smarmy op-ed piece about how the president needs to display character.

Perdue refers several times to the “radical liberal” agenda or the “radical liberal” Democrats. This is unfortunate on so many levels but it’s also quite illustrative. “Radical” has never been a good thing to be in American politics so Perdue is demonizing the mainstream opposition and characterizing it as being on the illegitimate fringe, Perdue fans the flames of partisan insanity while apparently freeing himself from any need to respond to the Democratic agenda on the merits (if it’s “radical” it’s not serious, right?). There is also the matter of the oxymoronic nature of the term “radical liberal” which indicates a complete absence of knowledge of history and political philosophy.

There is at least an argument that Trump’s economic policy as represented primarily by the tax cut of a year ago has been successful by some metrics. Perdue is unwilling to settle for that. According to him, “the United States has undergone an astonishing economic turnaround.” This is a Trumpian level of lie and mischaracterization. As far as I know, nobody disputes that the economy has been experiencing an expansion of historic levels since approximately 2010. This method of argument by lie and disinformation is tragic for the country. Buying into it is irresponsible for anyone claiming to speak as the “voice of reason.’

As long as we’re talking about the economy and the tax cut let’s look at Perdue’s characterization of the Republican Party as the party against “bigger government” which he describes as “fiscally and socially irresponsible.” At another point he claims that the Republican Party is the party of “fiscal responsibility, limited government and individual liberty.” Apparently, saying something is true is supposed to make it true. Whatever the history or roots of the Republican Party in limited government, individual liberty and fiscal responsibility, it, like everyone else, has to be judged by its actions, not its words and this characterization of the Republican Party is demonstrably and obviously false.

The government has done nothing but expand during the Trump administration (though some specific regulations have been cut). The tax cut was a budget buster of historic proportions from which we may literally never recover. The Patriot Act, perhaps the biggest single legislative blow to individual liberty since, I dunno, the Alien and Sedition Acts, was sponsored by and passed during a Republican administration. The Republican Party continues to speak out and agitate against many kinds of individual liberty from abortion (admittedly a special case) to wedding cakes. This idea that “if we simply repeat something often enough it becomes true” has become a central modus operandi of modern politicians and commentators and it is disturbing as hell. I don’t know, maybe Perdue actually believes this nonsense, but if so he’s totally brainwashed and incapable of recognizing reality. If he doesn’t really believe the trash he talks, that’s even worse. I really don’t understand what is to be gained by making claims and characterizing stands that have no basis in reality but it pisses me off, destroys individual credibility, makes public discussion and debate more or less impossible and makes it incredibly difficult to craft effective solutions to real problems. That this guy sees himself as a practical problem solver (I’m the only big time CEO in the Senate!) makes this all the more frustrating.

All of these rhetorical tricks, fact avoidance techniques and lies are not unique to Perdue. They are used increasingly commonly by more and more public actors. Trump himself is of course the master. But I am particularly struck by seeing so many of these techniques employed in one short op-ed piece the basis of which is Perdue’s apparent belief that he is one of the few straight shooters in Washington. Even allowing him the best of intentions, it’s obvious that the swamp distorts reality in ways that its denizens can’t even recognize to the detriment of all of us.

The shutdown on top of the hurricane has caused Ms. Minton to rethink a lot of things. “I voted for him, and he’s the one who’s doing this,” she said of Mr. Trump. “I thought he was going to do good things. He’s not hurting the people he needs to be hurting.”

She said the quiet part out loud

Winning helps. She beat the people who wanted to replace her. That's proof she's better at politics than they are. Once she got that leg up, her abilities and track record came back into play.

Or maybe he's just a Tom Stoppard fan:
Jumpers is a play by Tom Stoppard which was first performed in 1972. It explores and satirises the field of academic philosophy, likening it to a less-than skilful competitive gymnastics display. Jumpers raises questions such as "What do we know?" and "Where do values come from?" It is set in an alternative reality where some British astronauts have landed on the moon and "Radical Liberals" (read pragmatists and relativists) have taken over the British government (the play seems to suggest that pragmatists and relativists would be immoral: Archie says that murder is not wrong, merely "antisocial"). It was inspired by the notion that a manned moon landing would ruin the moon as a poetic trope and possibly lead to a collapse of moral values.
I bet Warren Zevon was a Tom Stoppard fan. Anyone have the catalog from the sale of his library? I bet there was some Stoppard in there:

My brother, who I do love with all of my heart, has somewhat recently undergone a political metamorphosis. A union electrician & lifetime Democrat; he was bamboozeled by Trump’s ‘Drain the Swamp’ horseshit. Not only does he want the Wall, but he would help build that motherfucker for free. Anyway, I bored y’all with this because he said some shit that I could not follow.

We’re watching the Terps play against Rutgers. We used to watch the Ravens until the kneeling thing (at which point he swore off football). So, a commercial for the upcoming Captain Marvel movie comes on & he gets all agitated. Of course it’s because Captain Marvel is a girl. Gender blending he called it (as if somehow it was a devious liberal plot). While I’m trying to explain to him that there is no harm in having little girls believe that they too can be heroes, he tells me that it’s mainly that they called her Captain that offended him. This is what I’m dealing with.

Naturally, the Wall talk comes up. I tell him that if he is offended by gender blending (whatever the fuck that is), then he ought to welcome the diversity that immigration brings us. He tells me that somehow this is a subversive plot to homogenize us. I think to myself that I am glad I don’t go to church but do look at lots of porn or I may have ended up as fucked up as him. Good thing the Terps won or shit might’ve got ugly.

This is remarkable. It really gets to the heart of "the problem" which in my view is that Americans have changed from a general outlook of bringing "the other" into the fold to keeping the other out in the cold. Or put another way, I'd rather the other guy do worse than me, even if I do poorly, than that the other guy does as well as me or better even if Im doing well. As you note, WWCD, In these PC days one does not often hear this viewpoint expressed quite so clearly and openly.

I appreciated it, myself, as I'm looking forward to having a Democratic candidate who, for a change, doesn't intend to hurt the wrong people. Since much of politics is a zero-sum game, that often means hurting the right people.

Who would those people be? I'm going to start with anyone who "bases his persona on being a down to earth man of the people, just w/ a really big bank account" and continue on to everyone making seven figures and up. It's time for their haircut.

I actually have no idea what "pull" means in this context, but thank you anyway. And this is how stupid I am: Tom Stoppard is so funny it took me a long time to realize he was also very conservative. It seemed like a violation of the order of things. Farceurs should be wild like their work. Which, come to think of it, is typically based on a) the rigid order of society and b) rooms with lots of doors. Maybe I should think this through again.

My buddy (he will be at HC), who I call Queso, was furloughed a couple of weeks ago. When he got the news, I borrowed from Michelle Obama and said, 'well, when they go Furlough, you get FurHigh!'. Funny, until the shutdown drags out for over two weeks and paychecks are missed.

So, I borrowed (heavily) from Cooley, and wrote him this. Thought you guys might enjoy:

It all started at the border
And thats still where it is today
They screwed over my friend Queso
And now he'll go without his pay

Yeah the President's a dickhead
and we know it one and all
and he'll cry just like a baby

colluding with the Russians
and steeped in porn star sin
an incompetent idiot
dumb of mind and orange of skin

it all started with the border
