The Neverending Thread for Political Shit

This forum is for talking about non-music-related stuff that the DBT fanbase might be interested in. This is not the place for inside jokes and BS. Take that crap to some other board.

Yup. That's over in GW's neck of the woods.

I'd actually bet that the dairy farmers themselves didn't vote for Trump. Even though it's a heavily agricultural area, and heavily conservative, the amount of people who have equity in an ag operation are probably less than 15-20% of the population. There's a misconception that Midwestern Farmers were the biggest Trump backers, but in reality, it was people who lived in small Midwestern towns. The biggest Trumpsters I know are small town people, but they aren't farmers. They work in factories, own small businesses, shit - one's even a doctor. Because agriculture is the predominant industry and one that's associated with this area, it gets tied to that movement. I of course know farmers who voted Trump, but I know just as many who didn't. The majority of rural residents aren't farmers, but they're often (especially in western Iowa) very conservative.

Most actual farmers where I'm at (3 hours due east of Sibley, the town in the story) support reformed immigration laws that make it easier to bring people from Mexico here to work in the livestock industry. North Iowa has incredibly low unemployment, so it's virtually impossible to hire locals for that work. As the story pointed out, the farmers aren't hiding their employment of these people from the IRS. They submit W9s, get taxes taken out in their name, and W3s are filed for all of these folks. Now, did they obtain that identity and those documents illegally? Probably, but there isn't really any way for the farmer to prove it, and if they hold themselves out as legal citizens with all of the documents to back it up, then you're going to accept it.

The ag industry needs labor. American citizens aren't willing to provide it. Mexicans are. It's pretty damn simple in my eyes. We have people who want to come here, work, and contribute. Let them. Jesus, it ain't rocket science.
A huge problem (perhaps the most important one) with American farming, food consumption, and healthcare is that the cost of meat products is kept artificially low because of subsidies, tax breaks, and a laissez-faire approach to industry regulation (especially in environmental issues). A pound of ground beef SHOULD cost more than a pound of asparagus. But the American consumer isn't willing to pay the true cost for animal protein.
Now it's dark.

so this anti-Cruz ad from Richard Linklater is getting a lot of hype

The ad stars Sonny Carl Davis, who is featured in one of my very favorite (and most quoted- we reference it almost daily!) film scenes of all-time**

I hope you had a helluva piss, Arnold!!!

**=around the 1:22 mark of the scene, take note of the young Nicolas Coppola, as he will billed in Fast Times

I couldn't quite bring myself to post this in the Grateful Dead thread...

Taper Culture Is Decadent And Depraved
Ann Coulter, who was one of the first people to hear the tapes Linda Tripp recorded of her phone conversations with Lewinsky—simply because, as a die-hard fan of the Grateful Dead, Coulter happened to have a state-of-the-art audio system. People brought the tapes over to her house for a late-night listening party.

Given that those two sentences are the only mention of GD and taping in that War and Peace-length article, you made the right choice

I have basically given up on the circus. There just doesn't seem to be any point to it all. But this one caught my eye and since it's slightly away from the center of the maelstrom I thought it was worth taking a closer look.

Can anybody explain to me how it is a Constitutional exercise of religion for a non-profit agency receiving government funds to refuse to place foster kids in need of a home w/ Jewish [or Catholic or Muslim etc etc] parents? What tenet is it of any branch of Protestantism which says "though shall not engage in charitable works with people of other faiths"?

True and in this case at least as plausible as the false flag conspiracy theories blaming the Democrats which have jumped w/ alarming speed and depth of acceptance from the aluminum foil hat fringe to the mainstream this week.

With Sir Reynolds Wrap on the throne egging them on, they have a seat at the table. But to call them the mainstream doesn't seem fully accurate to me.

Yes and no. Have you looked at polling results on the efficacy of flu shots lately? But we'll have a better, possibly final, answer about how aluminum and acid interact November 7th.

The most obvious is usually the right answer, sure enough, but when you have high-powered killers running around your world, weird shit happens. I still don't get the Debbie Wasserman-Schultz thing, unless it's just Florida, Jake. That was a very weird detail. Come to think of it, I guess it could be that Wasserman-Schultz is a Hillarista. Speaking of which, turns out the suspect and I have one characteristic in common: We have both misspelled "Hillary" as "Hilary" in a high-stakes situation.

I can't not say anything about Pittsburgh but there's not much to say. It certainly wasn't a surprise, which is among the saddest things about it. The inevitable gun issues and "political climate" concerns all have their place but pale beside the human tragedy.

Nor should we forget the Kentucky killings where a shooter couldn't get into the church he targeted and instead killed 2 random african americans. Hard, sad, frightening times.

I don't see why not. My minister did.

I rode the bus and then walked a mile up and down hills to church yesterday only to be disappointed by the sermon. It touched briefly on the attempted bombings and the Pittsburg murders, but mostly told people to not feel anxious and turn off the news when you need to. I like my minister a lot, but this sermon wasn't what I needed, at all.

the link is to Washington Post, hopefully that will be accessible to most (even if you aren't a subscriber you should get X amount of free reads per week/month)

“How do you call Steve King anti-Semitic?” he asked, just before giving a speech supporting gun rights at a dinner celebrating the first day of pheasant hunting season in the western Iowa town of Akron.

He said the groups he’s associated with that are criticized as having neo-Nazi views were more accurately “far right” groups. He specifically cited Austria’s Freedom Party, which was founded by a former Nazi SS officer and is led by Heinz-Christian Strache, who was active in neo-Nazi circles as a youth. The group has emphasized a hard-line anti-immigration stance even as it seeks to distance itself from the Nazi connections.

If they were in America pushing the platform that they push, they would be Republicans,” King said.

For the first time ever, I am forced to admit that Steve King is right

Bubba...you CAN say this killing is different than the last. Although conducted with an AR-15 assault weapon, there isn't much coverage directed toward gun violence or policy. It feels like the country has given up the debate this time. Sadly, it isn't surprising. After Las Vegas, the minimum action of swiftly banning bump-stocks was overtly promised. Even that never happened. Never happened. So here we are, wading into the new normal. I'm not sure what else to say at this point. Madmen can easily and often legally obtain weapons designed to rapidly and efficiently kill human beings. To me, that would indicate a system that is in need of repair. I believe the majority of Americans generally share my view. But, it doesn't matter. No one fucking cares.
