If you'd care to listen to an interview with this guy on my local public radio station's "Book Show".

http://wamc.org/post/jimmy-mcdonough-ta ... ntry-queen

What an Fing jack off. He refers to all women as "dames" and when the interviewer (who is seasoned, smooth and really good at his job) stealthily suggested that he tone it down he really let loose. If I recall correctly he claims to be personally haunted by Tammy Wynette.

Could still be a great book. Don't mean to ruin it for you Smitty

Is there something inherently derogatory about calling a chick a Dame? That interview isn't that bad.

Oh, good - I've been thinking of picking this up. It sounds excellent.

I'm at sales conference for Winter 2013 (Nov '12 - Feb '12 releases) and learning about some cool stuff. There's a book of short stories sent on Lookout Mountain, GA. Looking forward to that!

If it's not derogatory it's at least tacky as hell. Try it out on Mrs Puke and let me know how it goes.

Nameless Dame: Murder on the Russian River by Bart Schneider. Not such a great mystery but a great read. Great collection of oddball characters and expert weaving of poets and poetry into the narrative. First book of his that i've read, but i will read more.

McDonough's style takes a little getting used to, but he's one of my favorite biographers. Loved Shakey and his writeup on Gary Stewart; I'm not surprised his personality could rub someone the wrong way though.

I started "House of Leaves" by Mark Z. Danielewski a couple of days ago. I like it, but it's a tough read. Strange.

and I'm also not surprised he says he's "haunted" by Tammy Wynette - he seems very, umm, passionate about her to say the least.

I've been looking through this thread trying to find a good comp title for the Jay Farrar book of stories that's coming out in about six months. He's not as big as most of the bios you guys read - Patti Smith, Steve Earle, Willie Nelson - and I wanted something autobiographical or fiction by a well-known musician. Not easy! Most are too old or didn't do very well and they're all pretty hard to find. Finally came across the Bob Mould autobio and i think that's the one - it's only a year old, has sold about 7500 copies, and I think they probably have a comparably-sized audience (maybe even some overlap).

So, you guys are the best. Thanks for the help.

I was also gratified to see that you read quite a few books distributed by the company I work for, and not just because I sent you free copies! Duke Silver in particular likes our stuff and I saw that Smarty read our book about rescued horses. Awesome.

I love that you're a literate bunch.

xoxo

The Bob Mould book is pretty good - I picked it up last January. I shall also be buying the Farrar book when it comes out, hopefully pick up a copy next January as it is likely to be tough to find on this side of the pond.

Would Willy Vlautin's books any good to you as a comp?

It may not actually have released by January, but I'll save you a galley if the publisher makes them.

Willy Vlautin might be a good comp as well, though he's not as well known as Farrar (as a musician). Thanks for that!

My problem with Shakey is the author puts himself in the narrative repeatedly. Came off real creepy.
