Wendy--the missus and official bluebird monitor--reports that all five eggs have hatched and the nestbox is now a-stir with five wriggling pinkish-gray alien-looking bluebird babies.
(And LM, Clams is right--it's too early for 'maters.)

Re: Flora, Fauna, Foraging, Forest-y stuff
Spent a couple of hours Sunday filling about 20 flower pots with dirt from my compost and topped them off with a bunch of annuals that I bought on Saturday. It's been pouring rain on them since last night and I have to say all the pots looked pretty happy this morning.

the usual suspects... impatiens, petunias, begonias, geraniums, vinca, some tall yellow flowery ones, the tall spikey stuff, etc.
WTF is an asclepia (and is it pronounced ass-clepia like it looks??? )

Ahh...milkweed! Why didn't you say so.
If you go with the native varieties, they should do fine from seed, but may take a few seasons to bloom. Should be easy to find some small plants.
We have swamp milkweed, purple milkweed, butterfly milkweed, and spider milkweed. Beautiful plants and the birds and butterflies love 'em.
Good luck.

I think swamp milkweed and Mexican milkweed are the same thing.
If you want to order some, check out this place: http://www.mowildflowers.net/index.htm
It's a totally alsum all-native nursery and just about 10 minutes from our house. We go back again and again the way some folks go to their favorite tattoo parlor. And I'm pretty sure they do mail-order.
They're very knowledgeable and would be able to give you a good idea about what would be adaptable to Texas.

cool!!! I love the bright orange flowers. I wasn't able to get every plant I wanted from the other house, that's one I definitely want to have in the new butterfly garden, though.

Got a decent little garden going here in mid-IL. Need some sun, though.
I've actually got some ripe ones too...need to update pics.
Also need to keep this guy out.....
We've got a bit too much of this going on, too:
No, this is not a lake. It's a field.

Hey LM, I was mistaken. Mexican milkweed is the same as butterfly milkweed, not swamp milkweed.
Hope i didn't influence a screwed-up purchase.
By the way, it's copper iris season in our rain garden:

We drove all the way to Iowa for a family visit (1100 miles) ....and to satisfy my wife's obsession for morels.

Thanks, it would have been better if I didn't blow my chance to bring home a big gobbler. Visions of wild turkey and morel gravy flew out the window when I moved my restless arse and the giant Tom I had set up under when WHOMP WHOMP WHOMP away into the next county. We did have a few nice trout though, kept the stockie Rainbows and left the wild Browns.

Nice batch of morels! They've been done around here for about a month now. Didn't have a real good crop this year.
Here's a few babies we found when I actually had my phone to take a pic.
Today's strawberry harvest at the house. Got more at the farm that I need to pick.
Uh-oh. Got hungry looking at them.
