Watched this last night. It's tone is similar to Trainspotting, but substitute sex and bodily secretions for narcotics...and bodily secretions. Well, this has a lot more of the latter.

Jonathan Brugh would be perfect as Keith Moon.

holy shit! For the four years I lived in Austin I worked across the street from the Tower--victims were shot at the site of my job-- and my wife was on campus by the Tower everyday, but that said, I think this film would have delivered a big gut punch even if we had no connection to the place

Went to the world premiere of Patriots Day last nite. The premiere was somewhat lacking in glitz, tho there were a few famous names there including of course marky mark. One thing is very clear: David Ortiz could be mayor of Boston anytime he wants. But as my wife said, he basically already is, only w/out the headaches.

The movie is ok. Very earnest. You can see how hard the makers try to "get it right." The schmaltz is overdone, the rah rah is way overdone (did you know that Boston is a great city w/ wonderful people and a fantastic, no, really, fantastic, community of caring, highly skilled people?) and the movie just screams "competent, craftsmanlike (as opposed to artistic), by the numbers movie making," which is not a compliment. Speaking of rah rah, even when the movie takes the very slightest, most tentative step towards questioning troublesome methods of interrogation, the Boston cops are all squarely on the side of civil rights. I'm guessing that's a blue state thing. On the plus side they do keep the pace moving, the accuracy (as far as I know) is pretty impressive, Wahlberg and supporting cast do exactly what's expected of them and the movie seems to have checked all the boxes the makers set out to check. One notable thing is that the Tsarnaev brothers are well played and surprisingly well developed characters for this kind of movie (tho the ultimate question of "why?" is largely unexplored.

There are worse ways to spend a couple of hours but this is not going to rock your world.

There Will be Blood>The Master>Inherent Vice

I haven't watched many movies over the last 10 years (TV series obsessed and the well seems pretty dry at this point) so I decided to work through some lists. I'm so far behind in movie watching I didn't realize Joaquin Phoenix was this good. I can see where Paul Thomas Anderson could be a pretty polarizing film maker. Really liked The Master but I think I got too far into becoming JQ's Inherent Vice character while watching and might need to watch again with a clear head.

totally agree. i saw the original wall in la & the roger version in a relatively small arena in seattle. roger's was better. obviously pink floyd were great but the band was falling apart when the wall was done. one of the best concerts i've ever seen. roger waters is a visionary regarding concerts. the sparsely attended radio kaos tour was outstanding too. i've got really good tickets for the upcoming tour & am very excited.

But at least you can ogle Margot Robbie in tight-ass shorts for 123 minutes.

that would be the silver lining. that film really needed to follow the lead set by dead pool. i don't know if that would've saved it but it wouldn't have hurt.

Saw both of the big Christmas releases this weekend and the results were night and day. First Fences was fantastic. Yes it was little more than a play on film but that didn't matter at all. The performances by the entire cast were stellar particularly Denzel Washington and Viola Davis, but the supporting cast was also great. Denzel also knew enough as a director to just stay out of the way of the material. I was unfamiliar with the play other than knowing it existed so I went in blind to this but walked away impressed. Lots of Oscars coming.

Sadly I also saw Passengers. Jennifer Lawrence and Chris Pratt were actually on the high end of acting prowess for a science fiction film but the material let them down. The premise was great, the film looked gorgeous but the way the film dealt with its moral center was a huge problem. I felt there was a really great story waiting to get out here but the chances were wasted. Worth watching when it makes it to the streaming services but unless you just dig big screen special effects I'd skip it. I was really disappointed.
We call him Scooby Do, but Scooby doesn’t do. Scooby, is not involved

Thanks to a friend bringing it to my attention on FB I didn't hear of this movie until a few days ago. Ironically, it was that same friend that dropped a few hints about their reaction to the end of the movie that had me expecting some sort of big, dramatic finish. Instead, it sort of just drifts off but it is not one of those movies that leaves the viewer hanging. Major plot lines are resolved but still, due to my friend's comments, I was expecting something more to happen. All that aside, I most definitely enjoyed the movie. Critics are presently referring to it as one of the best movies of our time and a masterpiece. I'm not sure if I share those opinions but it does include some tremendous acting and several emotionally moving moments. Also, it could have used more Michelle Williams.
