I dug Get Out a lot, but felt it would have been a stronger film had the ending gone differently (to not spoil for those still interested). It would have made a MUCH stronger, but definitely less sunny, social statement. May not have garnered the positives it did, either, but I like film makers who have the balls to be piss off an audience.

definitely didn't hold up as well as I remembered it (last saw it in early 80s) but still pretty enjoyable. A contemporary remake of this done by the right director could be really good

yeah now that i think about it, this might have been my biggest issue.
i definitely thought the ending was going to a different place (presumably the same place you did) and it felt right (but fucked up, yes) so the fact that it didnt was a successful twist that just didnt settle right given the rest of the movie

watched this over the weekend

an absolute blast. a guys robot wife breaks down so he goes on a hunt to find an exact replica he can plug her memory cd into. from 1987 but set in the future, 2017, and all the sets and fashions were surreal as hell in that weird way thats simultaneously retro and futuristic. lots of predictable plots but all so much fun, melanie griffith especially

id seen crash and videodrome before so knew roughly what to expect from a david cronenberg movie, but this was disappointingly tame. plot had a lot of potential but didnt really deliver on it

Check out A History Of Violence and Eastern Promises as well. And his reimagining of The Fly is classic.

I wasn't a big fan of Dead Ringers, but have not seen it since it's initial release. Might deserve a revisit.

Cronenberg cameos in The Fly as an OB/GYN. If a Cronenberg film has an OB/GYN character, things are going to be fucked-up. Can you say "Maggot"?

i realized yesterday while skimming through wikipedia that i should just make an effort to see all his movies. i loved crash and videodrome when i watched them years ago, but im not sure how much of that was due to just never seeing anything remotely like them before. should rewatch them now. shivers wasnt bad (definitely had some great effects) but felt too slight, maybe typical of his earlier stuff?

great cast (tom hanks and carrie fisher were a great couple and corey feldmans shtick worked well as the neighbor kid left alone for a few days) but a bit disappointing. found it in hulu's horror section but its more a satire of nosey neighbors than anything. great potential but it just wasnt that funny and the thriller aspects werent intense enough to make up for it

Ocean's Eight - A reasonably diverting couple of hours on a sultry summer saturday nite. Nowhere near as good as the remake of Ocean's Eleven (which I loved) and nowhere near as bad as Ocean's Twelve (which I hated). Mostly a lost opportunity considering the quality of the cast and the potential of the central plot.

Like most heist movies of recent vintage, the writers/producers/director do not seem to realize that cleverness is the key to a good heist movie. Whenever (as is now always the case) all the problems are solved by a hacker who can do everything, occasionally joined by a science whiz/nerd who is both a genius and a surprise anti-stereotype, the plot has no chance to take off. This should have been funnier and more clever but like i say it was diverting enough.

Good points, bubba, and its the reason why the number of truly great heist movies is so small
