NC's Experimental Folk Scene

Post by Kudzu Guillotine »

Of the artists mentioned in this piece from NPR Music I'm most familiar with Jake Fussell and Sarah Louise. I first saw Sarah when she opened for Jake at a house show in Durham a few years back with her band House and Land. We also have the Nightlight in Chapel Hill that features a lot of these kinds of artists.

thx for posting. I've known Nathan for a while, solid dude. he plays w/ Steve Gunn sometimes and I think Pelt too.

been meaning to check out Fussell as some of my friends are big fans.

i have a record of two from Bachmann and have seen him play, he's good. Also my same friends are big Chuck Johnson fans. i don't know much of his solo work but i do have a couple of CDs from his 90s indie rock band Spatula that are pretty good.

Nathan plays around here all the time so it's likely that I've seen him at some point. In the photo with him is Casey Toll who I've seen in several different bands over the years, mostly Mount Moriah and as a member of H.C. McEntire's solo band.

I believe I caught Chuck Johnson once as part of a showcase during Hopscotch, possibly one for the Three Lobed Records label. If memory serves, Wooden Wand was also part of that showcase. In fact, the main reason I was there was to catch Wooden Wand.

Jake came to my attention when his cover of "Raggy Levy" appeared on the Georgia edition of Oxford American's Southern Music sampler in 2015. It was around that time that he had just moved to NC. I'm not sure how many times I've seen him since then. The Nightlight in Chapel Hill hosts a lot of this type of music. Pretty much every time I've ever been Jake has been there checking out the shows. As you might imagine he also performs there quite frequently.

Nice article on Casey Toll from IndyWeek in 2020. Well worth the read.

the only time i went to Hopscotch (2013) Cory ran a Three Lobed day at Kings. it was a great lineup! free shows from Magik Markers, Thurston Moore, Glenn Jones, Desert Heat(Steve Gunn w/ a guy named Cian?). I wish that Grayson was still involved with Hopscotch. He had some really good bands play.

Looks like the Three Lobed showcase I attended may have been in 2012 but I could have sworn it was the same year DBT's played (2011) as James Toth (Wooden Wand) also performed at a panel discussion Patterson, Heather McEntire, David Menconi, Stuart McLamb and others were part of. Below is the Three Lobed lineup from 2012 which is also the first time I saw Hiss Golden Messenger (solo). Though not listed here, I'm sure Black Twig Pickers performed as well. This afternoon was especially memorable because a homeless guy stormed the stage and went into an "occupy Hopscotch" rant. I didn't realize he wasn't part of the show until a bouncer escorted him off the stage.

damn that's a solid lineup.

the year i went there was also a free Paradise of Bachelors showcase in some nearby park; saw Pelt play, Cristina Carter, and a few others (Swearin' played but I had left already to catch Sleep's soundcheck). that really was an incredible festival... John Cale, Low, Mikal Cronin, Charlemagne Palestine, Gorguts, Golden Void, Spiritualized, Breeders, Wolf Eyes, Merzbow as festival guest and sat in on a few sets, Pere Ubu, etc. damn. i need to revisit my photos as i don't think i really edited and posted that many.

I remember having terrible FOMO when Golden Void, Grouper and Expo '70 were all playing at the same time.
