Tyler Childers interview in The Guardian

Post by whatwouldcooleydo? »

Americana ain’t no part of nothin

At the Americana awards, when Childers stepped up in a Colonel Sanders-style suit to accept the emerging artist award, he voiced his frustration with the genre. “Americana ain’t no part of nothin’,” he said. “It is a distraction from the issues that we are facing on a bigger level as country music singers.”

Defined by Merriam-Webster as “a genre of American music having roots in early folk and country music”, Americana, Childers says, started as “a place to recognise people being ignored by their own genres, but now it’s a hindrance. The stuff we used to call ‘good country’ is now getting called Americana. We’ve not fixed the problem of bad country.”

Country, Childers says, became vague and commercial. “The problem with country is we’ve turned the props into the play,” he says of the commercialisation of the songs. “Let’s not just Solo cup and pickup truck it to death. Let’s handle this in a smart way. Nobody is thinking about lyrical content, or how we’re moving people, or what’s going on in the background of their minds.”

Just picked up the new album today. I have to say, it's "good" country. Dude has a way with words and his band is really tight.

Very well done...new album is a really good listen so far. I am really liking Peace of Mind, great story. I cant help but think of Patterson while listening to it. Just sounds like something he would write.

Creeker is my favorite off the new album at this point. Seems to bear some influence from One of These Days, if we're doing to the DBT comparison thing.

Interesting bc I had Peace of Mind pegged as something Cooley would write. The way the song describes the family from the various perspectives of the mother, the father and the daughter reminds me of Primer Coat and Filthy & Fried. Funny though how we all tend to use DBT as a frame of reference.

Also in case anyone is curious, all the Country Squire lyrics are on genius: https://genius.com/albums/Tyler-childers/Country-squire

Love the trailer dims in Country Squire...classic. It is funny I just kept thinking of a slow moving story like Deeper In, not quite as demented, but now that you say Cooley I think of Sounds Better or Love Like This...either way we are all thinking the same reference!

Creeker and Matthew are my early favorites.
And Country Squire is straight 1970's, Gene Watson style country.

It’s the most sincere, funny, and touching (I know what I said) song about jerking off ever.

There have been funnier (WWJ “Better off Beatin’ Off”), more sincere/moving (Jackson Browne “Rosie”), but no one has hit every nail like Childers did.

I've spent a fair amount of time with this album over the last few days and I have to say I like it. Unlike most of you I never really caught the Tyler Childers bug as he was coming up, I bought the last record on vinyl and maybe listened to it twice, so I wasn't really anticipating this much at all but it surprised me. It actually made me go back to the last one and listen as well and I liked it better this time through.

A lot of the songs on both albums were written prior to the release of Purgatory. He went 6 years between albums, and piled up a mountain of good songs that still haven't been properly recorded.

A few of my favorites:

Live on Red Barn Radio is what hooked me, then I went back and appreciated Purgatory for what it’s worth.

been driving me crazy trying to figure out just who it is he physically reminds me of. Finally hit me last night: it's Dwight from Walking Dead/FTWD, of course minus the massive facial burn

Tyler added a few more tour dates, including a 4-night residency at the Ryman in February.

Unfortunately the last two nights of the Ryman residency will probably be during Homecoming, but I definitely plan on being there the first two nights. I saw him the first night he opened for Margo Price and I’ve never seen the Ryman that excited for anyone. That paired with the tickets being $45 and below should make these shows otherworldly.
