Paste: The 50 Best Southern Rock Albums of All Time
Not a terrible list but as always there is plenty to argue about

Shot #1:
As a Texan, I'm somewhat offended that the following bands could be considered Southern Rock. All great artists and albums, but I don't know that they fit in this particular genre.
Doug Sahm/Texas Tornadoes
Steve Earle
SRV
Alejandro Escovedo
I'll give ZZ Top to this list....I guess...
Also:
Ryan Adams? My Morning Jacket? These are a few bands I'm not sure I've ever considered a part of this genre.
Great list of artists and albums, but seems to me there is a line between 'Southern Rock' and 'Rock that started near the geographic South'.

That's really pretty solid.
If you're going to call the B-Rox southern, I would have liked to see some Prine in there. If "Southeastern" is rock, than Prine sure as hell is.
Hell, if you're going to throw the B-Rox in, the Jayhawks "Hollywood Town Hall" should have been in consideration. Obviously there's nothing Southern about Minnesota, but that album (and a lot of music to come out of the Midwest) is heavily informed by Southern music.

The "is Texas the South?" argument has fascinated me since I made the mistake of telling someone in a bar in Fort Worth in 2008 that "I've never been to the South, but I'm liking it so far".pearlbeer wrote:Let the arguments begin!Tequila Cowboy wrote:Not a terrible list but as always there is plenty to argue about

I received a very stern "you're not in the South. You're in Texas." and an icy stare. Lesson learned.

You have to ignore the "southern rock" label on this list to avoid your head exploding. If you take it as records from the south it isn't bad.

Yeah, that's probably fair.Tequila Cowboy wrote:You have to ignore the "southern rock" label on this list to avoid your head exploding. If you take it as records from the south it isn't bad.
But they have to be doing some limiting into the "rock" genre, because there's a whole lot of country, soul, funk, folk records made by people from the South that need to be included in a "records from the South" collection that are nowhere to be found.

Re: Paste: The 50 Best Southern Rock Albums of All Time
I didn't read the text to every album on the list, but I read a lot of 'em, and they're solid at worst and mostly better than that. Just about all of the albums on the list are either great or close to it by any definition. So it's an interesting list worth a few minutes of anybody's time. But the thing doesn't really hold together as "southern rock" any more than any of the arbitrary and ultimately "I know it when I hear it" terms we all use when convenient and diss when not. Which is not a criticism of anybody, including these listmakers, I'm just saying it's the nature of this beast we all call rock n roll even if we're not sure what that means, either
They did get #1 right so that's a good start. And extra credit for giving DBT the maximum of 2 slots and putting one of them in the top 5 and both in the top 15. Can't ask for much more than that.

Obviously some questionable genre-bending going on, but not a bad list. As long as SRO, Skynyrd, and Fillmore East are in the top 5 I can’t complain.
Turn it up to 10 and rip off the knob

Re: Paste: The 50 Best Southern Rock Albums of All Time
On my list, #38 would be somewhere in the top five, probably instead of Murmur (not my favorite REM by a long shot), Johnny would've been at San Quentin rather than Folsom, and the B-52s would be recognized as southern, which they are, and not only because Mars is a southern town.
So that's a pretty good list, I think.

I mean...some of this is simply shooting fish in a barrel.
If you're writing this piece from a geographical perspective, I suppose they hit all the biggies. It definitely lacks the deep dive aspect.

I’ve listened to fewer than ten of these front to back
Also, My Morning Jacket never has been nor never will be southern rock

Re: Paste: The 50 Best Southern Rock Albums of All Time
Best of lists normally make me irrationally angry but this list is rock solid. And from Paste? Kind of hard to believe.
By the time you drop them I'll be gone

Yeah. There's maybe 10 of these I haven't listened to. I own well over half.
