Phenomenal! When I was watching I thought his guitar player looked familiar & then it dawned on me. Holy shit! It's Sturgill Simpson! & he absolutely tore it up, especially on the first song. Sturgill wasn't announced on first song but they fixed that on the 2nd. Both songs in article on link. I don't think it's really country music but man does it rock.

Don’t watch SNL much anymore, but when I saw Stapleton tweeted about having Sturgill with him I made sure to DVR it. Two very good performances, I don’t think Stapleton has a single song that doesn’t sound better live.
Turn it up to 10 and rip off the knob

It was fantastic.
I think Sturgill wasn't announced because it was supposed to be a surprise. Both songs sounded impeccable, and didn't come off as going through the motions but genuine performances.

Re: Chris Stapleton on SNL
It was pretty killer. Stapleton's band is really, really tight. As good as I thought the production of A Room Vol 1 was, I felt that the songs on A Room Vol 2 came off a little more flat, but those 2 smoked live.

Great performances.
I'm still partial to Sturgill's solo performance of 'Call to Arms' on SNL. I made my 5 and 7 year old watch it and said, "Kids, listen. Look at that! THAT is Rock 'n Roll."

Love each other, Motherfuckers!
