I'd have it in my honorable mention either way. The musicianship is excellent, and the songs are actually pretty fucking brilliant.

Interesting. I guess it's hard for me to find the brilliance in something like this but to each his own:

"Finger Up My Butt"

Hold Up I think my Dick got stuck
Slow it down cause I can't get it up
Wanting me to Fuck and bustin' a nut
Then You Gotta stick a Finger in my Butt

You can try to play with your tits
Go ahead and lick my balls a little bit
If you want my dick inside of your muff
Then You Gotta stick a Finger in my Butt

Met a girl named Sally at the local pub
Not gonna lie she was a big fat tub
Back to my place and then messed around
Couldn't get it up so we couldn't get down

Hold Up I think my Dick got stuck
Slow it down cause I can't get it up
Wanting me to Fuck and bustin' a nut
Then You Gotta stick a Finger in my Butt

You can try to play with your tits
Go ahead and lick my balls a little bit
If you want my dick inside of your muff
Then You Gotta stick a Finger in my Butt

Me and Sally became good friends
She called me up the next night and said
"Before we get back home
Be a good boy and clean out your butthole"

Hold Up I think my Dick got stuck
Slow it down cause I can't get it up
Wanting me to Fuck and bustin' a nut

1. Roger Waters - Is This the Life We Really Want?
2. Ty Segall - s/t
3. Kendrick Lamar - DAMN
4. Ian Felice - In the Kingdom of Dreams
5. Iron and Wine - Beast Epic
6. Phoebe Bridgers - Stranger in the Alps
7. Annie Hardy - Rules
8. The Worn Flints - Clementine
9. Son Volt - Notes of Blue
10. Wild Reeds - The World We Built
11. Jason Isbell - The Nashville Sound
12. Dead Man Winter - Furnace
13. Black Angels - Death Song
14. Lana Del Rey - Lust For Life
15. Black Lips - Satan’s Graffiti or is it God’s Art?

Also liked (but not enough spins to rank): Father John Misty, Jessica Lea Mayfield, Noel Gallagher, Liam Gallagher, Temples, Grizzly Bear, Offa Rex, Foo Fighters

I'm not going to write out all the records, but a few observations:

- The Roger Waters record is a revelation. It's his best work in 20+ years, both musically and lyrically. Its anger is palpable and necessary for our time.
- This is the most female artists I've ever had on a year end list, and I'm thrilled for it. So many good female artists kicking ass.
- This was a rough year for hip hop. I really REALLY hate the "trap" sound, which is what pretty much everyone produced this year.
- I continue to be enamored with everything Felice, and I'm shocked that Ian's solo record went completely unnoticed in these parts.

OK, finally got a list done. The one thing I'll say is that the actual top ten are the hardest records I've ever had to rank. I could seriously make a case for any of the first eight to be ranked first and there isn't a steep drop off with the next two (not to mention the three or four after that). There are quite a few that didn't make the list that I like a lot including Kendrick Lamar, Gregg Allman, Ray Wylie Hubbard, Turnpike Troubadours, Marty Stuart, Taj Mahal & Keb' Mo', Rodney Crowell, Rhiannon Giddens, Allison Moorer & Shelby Lynne, Steve Earle, Chris Hillman and the venerable Willie Nelson but those never made it to enough regular rotation for me to include them although I plan on spending more time with all of them. In the last few weeks, mostly because I admire this dude so much as human that I owed it another shot, I've revisited Jason Isbell's Nashville Sound and while I can't even put it in the top twenty five or maybe even top thirty of 2017 there are three or four songs on that album that are pretty great albeit just a little slow to reveal themselves. Unfortunately I think 2017 was the year where I finally stop trying to listen to Ryan Adams because I always end up disappointed despite really wanting to like his work and never going in with high expectations. Also if anyone released a better song than Craig Finn's God in Chicago in 2017 I've yet to hear it. Oh, and while it doesn't fit on any sort of a list Lilly Hiatt and Aaron Lee Tasjan's cover of the late, great Tom Petty's Walls deserves mention for it's sublime beauty. I mean it's simply gorgeous, but I digress. Oh and the spirit of the aforementioned Petty hangs over everything of 2017. I spent weeks listening to his work almost exclusively. Thank you sir, for everything. Without further ado here are my top 20 for 2017:

1. Bash & Pop- Anything Could Happen
2. John Moreland- Big Bad Luv
3. Hurray for the Riff Raff- The Navigator
4. Hiss Golden Messenger- Hallelujah Anyhow
5. Lilly Hiatt- Trinity Lane
6. Will Johnson- Hatteras Night, A Good Luck Charm
7. Lee Bains III & the Glory Fires- Youth Detention
8. Son Volt- Notes of Blue
9. Porter & the Bluebonnet Rattlesnakes- Don't Go Baby It's Gonna Get Weird Without You
10. Tyler Childers- Purgatory
11. Craig Finn- We All Want the Same Things
12. Mavis Staples- If All I Was Was Black
13. Old 97's- Graveyard Whistling
14. War on Drugs- A Deeper Understanding
15. Chuck Prophet - Bobby Fuller Died for Your Sins
16. Susto- & I'm Fine Today
17. Jessica Lee Mayfield- Sorry is Gone
18. Father John Misty- Pure Comedy
19. David Rawlings- Poor David's Almanack
20. The Sadies- Northern Passages

I'll admit it was his weakest to date. Frankly it was much higher on the list earlier in the year but it hasn't held up as well. I do like it though.

My favorites in no particular order. Though Sun Volt might have been my most consistently favorite.

John Moreland - Big Bad Love - I really loved the song "Love is not the Answer" besides most of the other songs
Hurry for the Riff Raff - The Navigator - A great album, it had everything,
Lee Bains - Youth Detention - I'm a sucker for guys with a message who want to blast a tune at the same time
Sun Volt - Notes of Blue - An early release for the year, was expecting to blow this off. Jay Farrer might be my favorite rock vocalists
Craig Finn - We All Want the Same Things - Besides the truly awesome God in Chicago, there was a bunch of catchy ass kicking stuff as well
Chuck Prophet - Bobby Fuller - Always avoided Chuck Prophet, but anyone who writes a song about Connie Britton deserves a shot. Turns out I was wrong all along
The Sadies - Northern Passages - Saw them open for Kurt Vile a few years ago and was mesmerized. This album kicked ass and was one of my tops
St Vincent - Massseduction - What can I say, I love everything about her. Hopefully, she does the next 007 theme song
Scott H Biram - The Bad Testament - I was angry for most of this year for various reason, this guys provided the support I needed.
The Parson Red Heads - Blurred Harmony - I try to avoid pop bordering on yacht rock, and every time I wanted to pull these guys from my 2017 playlist, I couldn't do it.
Sarah Shook - Sidelong - I'm a sucker for females who drink and smoke too much, actually, the female Scott H Biram
Banditos - Visionland - Another one which grew on me, I thought I was sick of this sound, but maybe I'm not
(Sandy) Alex G - Rocket - Philly's own psychedelic pop guy, who happens to be friends with my son, but a couldn't get enough of this guy. He's legit, please check him out.
Black Angels - Death Song - Loved these guys since the first True Detective series. A constant on my playlist along with Son Volt, Chuck Prophet, Alex G, and the Sadies
Nikki Lane - Highway Queen - I loved this album, I was hoping to see a little more love for this artist.
Chris Stapleton - From a Room - I know, standard stuff, but, finally got into Chris Stapleton and liked it,
Mark Porkchop Holder - Let it Slide - Yes, slide guitar, what's not to love.

I'll say that most of my favorite records this year are well represented here: Tyler Childers (my #1 this year), HFTRR, Kendrick Lamar, Colter Wall, Margo Price, LBIII, Porter & The Bluebonnet Rattlesnakes.

I've hyped them up in a few different threads, so forgive me if I'm a broken record on this. The record I may have gotten the most mileage out of is from a local band that I think some people around these parts might dig: Gasoline Lollipops' Resurrection. Kind of a strange name for a band, granted, but the band that brought us all together is called Drive-By Truckers. I'm not, by the way, affiliated with this band in any way. Just a fan who thinks they deserve a bigger audience.

They actually put out two records this year: Resurrection in February to finish off a trilogy (the first two were Dawn and Death), and Soul Mine just a few weeks ago. Based on their touring schedule, they seemingly haven't gotten a lot of traction outside of Denver/Boulder yet, but I hope that changes, because their live show is fantastic. Colorado is a hard place to be from for a band hoping to build a following; any other major metro area is at least 8 hours away by (fuel-inefficient) tour van.

I was at their album release show at the Fox Theater in Boulder a couple weeks back and the frontman, Clay Rose, referred to them as "cowpunk" (as in "When I started this band, they told me there was no market for Cowpunk music in Boulder, Colorado.") I've never loved that genre descriptor, personally, but if they're willing to use it, I'll pass it along. There's often a strong classic/outlaw country undercurrent. Things get a little goth at points. But the songs and musicianship are uniformly strong. Lead guitarist Donny Embory is unbelievable on the Telecaster. He never misses a note. Fiddler Jeb Bows (80-grade fiddler name) also plays and tours with Gregory Alan Isakov, but when he's around, the shows are on another level.

A few press-kit excerpts that may help you decide if these guys might be up your alley:

"If the Coen Brothers and Nick Cave holed up in Nashville after a near-death experience, it might sound something like Resurrection. The album marks the third in Boulder-based Gasoline Lollipops' so-called Lucky Sevens trilogy, putting an appropriate cap on the themes of destruction and doom. But the end is only the beginning for Resurrection, an album that defiantly celebrates life in earshot of death" - The Denver Post

"The Gasoline Lollipops sound like 'Johnny Cash on steroids,' their fans would say. That's the best genre descriptor I've ever heard. Not 'They sound Americana, kind of,' or 'Uh, they have this rock/country mashup thing going on.' It's 'You'll feel like you're listening to a Johnny Cash concert after Johnny's had a hit of acid and a hit of ecstasy and done 100 pushups backstage.' Or whatever. The message is that the singer's voice reminds you of Cash - the heart and soul of his type of music is there, but the energy is also huge and sometimes takes control of the band and the audience at the same time" - Colorado Daily

That last one is a little over-the-top, and one must be judicious in invoking Johnny Cash. But if any of that sounds appealing, give it a spin.

Gasoline Lollipops are qued up on my phone for my run tomorrow. Both of their 2017 albums. I’m old and the weather is cold tomorrow, I’ll really need a kick in the ass. I’m banking on the Lollipops to provide that kick.

Let me know what you think! Here's a neat little link between the band and your list: Clay's mom co-wrote "Last Thing I Needed First Thing This Morning" that shows up on Stapleton's Vol I. In fact, when she was having some health problems recently, Clay told the fans they could help her out by buying the Stapleton record so she'd get more royalties.

Your list also reminded me how much I enjoyed that Biram record before I moved on to other things, so I'm revisiting that as we speak. "Red Wine" is definitely one of my top 20 songs of the year.

It is obvious where I get most of my musical input these days. Most of what hass been already been mentioned in other peoples lists would also appear on mine, so I am not going to repeat that, other than saying I would probably put LBIII, John Moreland and HGM in my top three.

The only album I haven't seen mentioned by anyone else is Susanne Sundfør - Music for People in Trouble. Probably belongs in my top five.
