Tribute albums that you like more than originals
I've been listening to Say Yes! The Elliott Smith tribute album and I have to say I'm really liking the versions on the album more than the originals. It got me thinking of tribute albums I enjoy more than the original artists versions. I'm not saying the covers are better but for whatever reason I turn to those versions more often than the originals.
The ones that come to mind are:
Say Yes!
Virus 100 tribute to the Dead Kennedy's
Violent World tribute to the Misfits
Return of the Grevious Angel tribute to Gram Parsons.

Not more than the originals, but definitely as much...

I used to play the shit out of Deadicated. I think the Lyle Lovett and the Warren Zevon songs were my favorites. Been a while though.

Where The Pyramid Meets The Eye:Tribute To Roky Erikson
Again not better than the originals but one of the best tribute records I've heard.

sorry, I don't buy in to the concept of better than the originals but this one was pretty great. Pearl Jam's cover of Crazy Mary even became one of their staples.
We call him Scooby Do, but Scooby doesn’t do. Scooby, is not involved

For myself I think I just find myself liking covers because it's (sometimes) a new take on something I already loved. Maybe saying Better Than was a poor choice of words.

That album is fantastic. Indigo Girls, Los Lobos, Costello....Clams wrote:I used to play the shit out of Deadicated. I think the Lyle Lovett and the Warren Zevon songs were my favorites. Been a while though.
Nothing special musically, but I do have a soft spot for this one:
Also, not really a tribute album, but I do like the Gimmie's salute to contemporary R&B
And of course:
Also a solid recent album:
Don't forget this one, with some hometown heroes.
Love each other, Motherfuckers!
