Another invalid R&RHoF ballot omits Warren Zevon

Know of a great band you think we'd like to hear about? Got some music news? Or just want to talk about music in general? Post it here.

Another invalid R&RHoF ballot omits Warren Zevon

Post by John A Arkansawyer »

No reason to bury the lede, right? So here's the list, with my five favorites at the top:

Nina Simone
Sister Rosetta Tharpe
Link Wray
The Meters
Eurythmics

or maybe

The Cars
MC5
The Zombies

but not

Bon Jovi
Kate Bush
Depeche Mode
Dire Straits
J. Geils Band
Judas Priest
LL Cool J
Moody Blues
Radiohead
Rage Against the Machine
Rufus featuring Chaka Khan

Okay, Rufus/Chaka Khan too, in a different year.

I thought this was a very strong group. I'm usually fishing for someone to round out my top five. This time, each and every one of the first four up there (each subgroup is in alphabetical order) is unquestionably deserving: Nina Simone, Sister Rosetta Tharpe, Link Wray, and The Meters. All they might lack is fame. And Link Wray even played rock and roll! ;-)

ETA:

Q: What do the list of nominees for the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame and your haircut have in common?
A: They are both invalid.

Sister Rosetta Tharpe should have been in long ago. Her singing/guitar playing was hugely influential in the gospel strain of rock 'n' roll's heritage.

I know they'll get in, but Bon Jovi have no business being in the HOF. At least not in a legitimate HOF

Heard Let's Go! on the ride into work this morning. 3:30 of pop radio bliss.

Good grief how are the Cars not in the Rock 'n Roll Hall of Fame.

Warren Zevon
Little Feat
Foreigner
Blue Oyster Cult
J. Geils Band

are also not in by the way.
By the time you drop them I'll be gone
And you'll be right where they fall the rest of your life

Zevon and Little Feat are grave injustices, and I'm rooting for BÖC whether they're deserving or not. Hell, nobody's deserving, right?

I always expect the Zevon slight, I didn't expect the Soundgarden slight. You would think they were a lock this year after Chris Cornell's passing.

I believe they both should be. As much of a deserved critics darling as they have been since OK Computer, Radiohead is a no doubter. Does Rage get held out due to their genre of music is less friendly and that their catalog wasn't that extensive? We'll see.

I disagree that Rage is first ballot

No way in hell Foreigner should be in the HOF.

More deserving than Laura Nyro, Lloyd Price, Gene Pitney, Kiss, Percy Sledge and Madonna?

I Love It. Foreigner is Now Illegal.

What the Hell I'm bored waiting for the Port Chester show to start,

Perhaps it’s time for a reassessment of the music career of the band Foreigner. Or maybe it’s time to get another beer.

Well let’s start here. Their first record is as good as any debut album in rock history.
Here are 2 songs from the first record.

It’s like we’ve forgotten as a society of rock fans what a great singer Lou Gramm from up state New York is!

Their entire debut recording and songs like Double Vision, Head Games, Waiting On A Girl Like You, Dirty White Boy, etc. are all catchy, well crafted songs. All they had was 4 quality records. That was all. They had others, sure, both they’re pretty forgettable.

We all understand that overexposure to anything is a bad thing and Foreigner did get an awful lot of airplay at the time and ad naseum now on Classic Rock stations. In that way they are the victims of their own success.

I want to be completely clear here. I am not saying that Foreigner is an iconic or terribly important band. I’m saying they are just as deserving of being in the Rock ‘ Roll Hall of Fame as one hit wonders Gene Pitney, Lloyd Price or Percy Sledge, or any number of the myriad of doo wop groups that are in or Madonna or James Taylor.

Plus there’s this bonus – They played rock n’ roll.
By the time you drop them I'll be gone
And you'll be right where they fall the rest of your life

Since this time you omit Laura Nyro, I'll grit my teeth over Percy Sledge in the spirit of compromise and agree with you.

i seriously question why the Eurhythmics even got nominated.

Cars, Meters, Radiohead, Priest. i'm good w/ those four. i would guess Simone or Tharpe might get in.

LOTS of great debut albums on this list!

Hey I recognize that mine is a minority opinion. How truly boring the world would be if we all had the same backgrounds, tastes and opinions.

Just curious if you listened to the tracks I posted. (It’s kind of hard to remember all of the album cuts from records that were released 40 years ago.)

I guess I’ll have to be satisfied with Mick Jones and Lou Gramm being in The Songwriter’s Hall of Fame, as they were inducted in 2013.
By the time you drop them I'll be gone
And you'll be right where they fall the rest of your life
