There are reports that he has been taken off life support. I'm just sick right now.

I just spent last week listening to his Story Tellers set on my lunch breaks in the car, laughing and shit. Such a genuinely great guy not to mention his art. What a fucked up day...

One of my all time favorites. So glad that I got to see him play with the Heartbreakers one last time at Summerfest in Milwaukee in July. It was the best performance that I have ever seen him play out of about 5 other times. His music has been with me throughout every stage of my life since I was a second grader. This is crushing.

I still remember picking up his first record and the first Van Halen at the Peaches in Tulsa while I was working the pipeline in April, maybe May, of 1978. I'd heard his record the previous December in Ann Arbor and loved it. Never did see him live, but I sure did listen to that radio play "bootleg" a lot then.

I'm such a fucking cynic. When I saw "Hall of Famer" in the headline, I just knew the story was from Rolling Stone.

I got in trouble in pre-school for singing Free Fallin' on nursery rhyme day.

Tom Petty's music has been part of my life literally as long as I can remember.

Fuck. One of the first rock and rollers I ever got into, and one of the first concerts I ever saw: Long After Dark tour, 1982 at the old Spectrum in Philly.

What a huge bummer. This one hurts.

Most the time the music I am listening to depends on my mood. There are only a few bands/artists that I can turn on any time, any day and be in the mood for. DBT, Dwight Yoakam and Tom Petty. That might be an odd grouping but it is true. I know I'm not feeling this as hard as Smitty is right now but it is a similar feeling to when someone you know dies. It doesn't seem real.

I said this to myself last night when I got the first breaking reports of the Las Vegas mass shooting, but it applies here as well:

This is the first musician death that really hit me hard. I am 39 years old, and Full Moon Fever is probably the first album I really got into, as far as exploring the album cuts and digging into the lyrics. He's been one of my top 2 or 3 artists since then, and I'm devastated after hearing the news. I can't think of a specific time period in my life without thinking of his music as a companion. Rest easy Tom.

I wanted to play in a band largely because of Tom Petty.
I learned to write songs largely because of Tom Petty.
Every record, every song has some connection to moments in my life.

My heart already broken when I heard about Last Vegas, especially juxtaposed against the beautiful weekend we just spent in Atlanta, but this just pushed me over the edge. Coming off last year I have been mentally preparing myself for many of my heroes' times coming, because although it's sort of taboo to discuss it, realistically by the nature of time they're drawing close, but somehow I took Petty for granted in a way, especially considering that despite his lessening touring proclamations, he's still been so active in putting out new original music... I just never figured his time was on the horizon. It's a sobering affirmation that you just never know and you should never take for granted that there will be another record or another show.

FUCK.

Tom Petty was one of the good guys. Top Ten show - Tom Petty playing in the rain at Zilker Park in Austin closing out ACL in 2006 I think. The rain delayed his set about halfway through but he played in the rain until the stage began to turn into an electrified bathtub. Rather than pack it up and go home, as he certainly could have, he stood on the side of the stage smoking cigarettes and chatting with other musicians. Once the rain let up enough to safely take the stage, he played his full set and then some. He was as pro, a performer and a genuine human being.

FUCK.

Mass shootings, natural disasters, Trump and now we will have to face a world without Tom Petty. I feel like a fucking dinosaur looking up at a rock in the sky and thinking, "what the fuck is THAT?"
Love each other, Motherfuckers!

I knew that we were heading into a rough 5-10 years where many of our classic rock heroes are going to pass away, I just never thought Petty would be this soon
And I knew when I woke up Rock N Roll would be here forever

Petty was a big part of my musical life, and how I learned to grow and love music really.
I've had an on again, off again love affair with his music over the years. At one point, I simply couldn't get enough of his music. And then that stage passed. I've seen him perform in concert more time than I can safely remember. A couple of those were less than good shows, but most were top notch. The consummate performer's performer, with a band, much like the E Street Band, that played a big part in the music I loved. When I found out the 40th Anniversary tour was opening here in OKC earlier this year, that early love came rushing right back like it had never been gone. It wasn't the best one, but it was what I needed. Petty was incredibly good to his fans. He loved them and vice versa. I mailed a couple of photos and a letter to Tom to the OKC venue in the days leading up to the tour opener. I got these back along with the guitar pick. Thanks Tom, you were one of the best.
