One of my earliest musical obsessions. Just spun Countdown.
RIP

RIP Walter. What a sad day. Loved Steely Dan since day one. Like Becker said in that story, they played rock and roll but they swung. Like we've discussed, DBT does that too.
Kick out the jams motherfuckers.
Re: RIP Walter Becker (Steely Dan)
I somehow made it through yesterday without hearing about this.
"I'm not interested in a rock/jazz fusion," Becker told Rolling Stone in 1974. "That kind of marriage has so far only come up with ponderous results. We play rock & roll, but we swing when we play. We want that ongoing flow, that lightness, that forward rush of jazz."
He added, "I learned music from a book on piano theory. I was only interested in knowing about chords. From that, and from the Harvard Dictionary of Music, I learned everything I wanted to know."

Steely Dan always reminds me of a brief time in my late 20s that was one of the best periods of my life.

I heard “Old School” in the car today and it’s stuck in my head. My sister-in-law went to William and Mary which is mentioned in the lyrics.

were there oleanders growing in her yard?
Re: RIP Walter Becker (Steely Dan)
Worked this one up on guitar recently - such a good song.
A few nuggets:
Daddy Gee refers to G. Gordon Liddy
A "35 sweet goodbye" is a blow job. 35 is half of 69! (rounded of course)
My old school is Bard (in Annandale, NY), which was often referred to the "william and mary of the north"
Love each other, Motherfuckers!

I met Walter Becker at a gas station in Malibu. This was when he was messed up from getting hit by a car. He was having trouble putting gas in his Porsche & I gave him a hand.pearlbeer wrote: ↑Sun Jul 03, 2022 9:07 pmWorked this one up on guitar recently - such a good song.

Love "35 sweet goodbye" which is classic obscure steely dan and new to me.pearlbeer wrote: ↑Sun Jul 03, 2022 9:07 pmWorked this one up on guitar recently - such a good song.

I've never heard the Bard - W&M comparison and based on what I know of both schools (not all that much but some) it doesn't make much sense to me, but that in itself may be good evidence that it made sense to Becker & Fagen.

I love this interview with Donald Fagen. I might have found someone more curmudgeonly than Zip. No offense, Zip...you old curmudgeon.

Albini ain't having none of that Becker/Fagen magic.
