The "How do you rank 'em in the middle of the year?" Thread
I've found this year a little underwhelming in terms of numbers of quality stuff. What's good is very good but some years I have a hard time narrowing down to 20 by now. Not this year but here goes:

9. The Sadies- Northern Passages
10. Old 97's- Graveyard Whistling

I thought DRA "Prisoner" sucked at first, but I've since came around. The songwriting is lighter than I usually lean towards but I really dig the production and overall vibe.
The new Sun Kil Moon has all the replay value of a shitty audio book. Hell that's pretty much what it is, an audio book of Koz's diary.
But yeah, fairly underwhelming year, especially after last year. I just realized I haven't heard that many new records this year; in fact, if someone wants to send me the new Will Johnson and Craig Finn, well I'd be just tickled

The relative lack of enthusiasm for the Isbell album is quite surprising, maybe even shocking, and does not bode well for him.
As for my take on this year, I've listened to very few new albums and haven't loved any of them. I have no doubt that this says more about me than about the quality of music available, but that's just the way it is these days. I expect I'll keep plugging away in haphazard fashion and hope that something sticks, even out of a small sample.

Really? I think pretty much everything is boding well for Mr. Isbell these days ($800 sneakers, anyone?). People here (me included) have been critical of his new direction (it's not really new anymore) for a while now so the lack of enthusiasm here doesn't surprise me at all.beantownbubba wrote:The relative lack of enthusiasm for the Isbell album is quite surprising, maybe even shocking, and does not bode well for him.

Yeah, his fans are fanatical his popularity just keeps building. The record debuted at #1 on the country chart and #4 on the overall chart. I'm only a couple listens in but so far, I like The Nashville Sound and I have no issues with Something More Than Free though I certainly understand why so many here feel the way they do about both these records. Given that, I'm quite surprised that I like them as much as I do. No less an authority on the type of music discussed here than No Depression co-founder Peter Blackstock has gone on record as saying that Something More Than Free is the best album of the decade so far. While I don't share that opinion, I'm not sure what I would name as my favorite album of the 2010's so far without consulting a list.beantownbubba wrote:The relative lack of enthusiasm for the Isbell album is quite surprising, maybe even shocking, and does not bode well for him.
I have purchased very few new record so far this year and of the ones I have purchased, I'm not exactly sure how I'd rank them other than to put Bash & Pop in the #1 spot. Though the Sarah Shook is technically a 2016 release, I'm including it here due to the re-release of it on Bloodshot.

Yeah, after some early exposure and attendance struggles that dude is riding with a golden horseshoe up his ass to the moon. I understand that he is playing really big theaters now, but if I had to bet on whether he has outgrown those or not in three years, I would say that he has outgrown those venues if he wants to. And good for him. As I had mentioned before I am fine with the new album.Tequila Cowboy wrote:Yeah, his fans are fanatical his popularity just keeps building. He plays (and fills) a bigger venue literally every time he comes through Philly. He's gone from the North Star Bar to World Cafe to the Keswick to the Electric Factory to the Fillmore. Each one is bigger than the previous.Cubfan06 wrote: I understand that he is playing really big theaters now, but if I had to bet on whether he has outgrown those or not in three years, I would say that he has outgrown those venues if he wants to. He easily sold out one night at the Chicago Theatre within 72 hours of its on-sale date the last time he was in town. For that tour on SMTF, tickets were starting and selling at $110 for the balcony seats. To get on the back of the main floor were starting at a buck fifty on Stub Hub at that time. The Chicago Theatre has a capacity of 3,600. On Labor Day weekend, he is playing two nights at the Chicago Theatre. The only natural progression after that is larger amphitheaters and arenas if he chooses to take his shows there. Or he could take the Jack White/White Stripes philosophy of staying in the largest theater setting, with high demand for multiple nights as not to effect the intimacy and sound of his performance. Either way he is in a pretty good fucking spot.Clams wrote:He plays (and fills) a bigger venue literally every time he comes through Philly. All that I know is that with his run on the late night shows and favorable exposure in the press, he has a lot of new fans. I have had a lot of comments from friends and colleagues who had never listened to his music before, but have already dug back before Southeastern to Live From Alabama.

I guess this belongs in an Isbell thread but on the topic of him blowing up, when I saw him play a sold out show at the Lincoln Theatre in Raleigh shortly after the release of Southeastern in 2013, I had a sneaking suspicion that he'd already outgrown venues of that size. The next time he came to his area, it was with Sturgill at DPAC in Durham which also sold out. As some may recall, that was the show where at least one local writer felt that Sturgill was the more captivating performer on stage that night. I have only seen Isbell in concert one time since, which was also at DPAC but not the same show. When I went, Anderson East was the opener.

I've never seen Sturgill live, but based on my preference for his studio albums and given the live clips I've watched, I have no doubt I'd agree with that reporter.Kudzu Guillotine wrote:I guess this belongs in an Isbell thread but on the topic of him blowing up, when I saw him play a sold out show at the Lincoln Theatre in Raleigh shortly after the release of Southeastern in 2013, I had a sneaking suspicion that he'd already outgrown venues of that size. I haven't gone to see Jason since he toured Southeastern. The predictable set list is a huge turn off. The crowd was way less fun than a DBT crowd too.Kudzu Guillotine wrote:I know of several friends that also exited that evening before Jason's show was over for the same reasons.Iowan wrote:I've never seen Sturgill live, but based on my preference for his studio albums and given the live clips I've watched, I have no doubt I'd agree with that reporter.Kudzu Guillotine wrote:I guess this belongs in an Isbell thread but on the topic of him blowing up, when I saw him play a sold out show at the Lincoln Theatre in Raleigh shortly after the release of Southeastern in 2013, I had a sneaking suspicion that he'd already outgrown venues of that size. Based on his comments about retiring old songs, my distaste for SMTF (although Children of Children would be cool live), and the unchanging set list, I'm in no hurry to get back. I'm not avoiding him necessarily, it's just that I have a lot less time for shows, and there are a lot of artists I'd rather see.

3. Vince Staples - Big Fish Theory
4. Jason Isbell and the 400 Unit - The Nashville Sound
5. Father John Misty - Pure Comedy
6. Thundercat - Drunk
7. SZA - Ctrl
8. Angaleena Presley - Wrangled
9. Colter Wall - Colter Wall
10. (Sandy) Alex G - Rocket.

Need to add Tyler Childers' Purgatory and Colter Wall's self titled to this list. Plus, new records on the way soon from Ray Wylie Hubbard, Shelby Lynne and Allison Moorer, David Rawlings, and Courtney Barnett and Kurt Vile. I think it's been a really solid music year; I enjoy all of these albums quite a bit.
New Turnpike coming in October, and new QOTSA later this month will likely factor in my final rankings. Both artists last albums were my AOTY in their respective years (2015 and 2013).

Agree on the Tyler Childers, definitely top 10. I haven't listened to the Moreland much either but it remains #1 on the year for me and the only reason I haven't listened is that I probably listened to it twice a day for a month or more. Still far and away the best thing I've heard this year. Bash & Pop is #2.Iowan wrote:Add Tyler Childers to the Top 10. Drop Moreland to the HM. Just not getting a ton of spins from me lately.
New Turnpike coming in October, and new QOTSA later this month will likely factor in my final rankings. Both artists last albums were my AOTY in their respective years (2015 and 2013).
We call him Scooby Do, but Scooby doesn’t do. Scooby, is not involved

dan baird – solow (this excellent RnR record suffers from a poor sequence as the best songs are the last few)
nicole atkins – goodnight, rhonda lee
bash & pop – anything could happen
son volt – notes of blue
john moreland – big bad luv
chuck prophet – bobby fuller died for your sins
gold star – big blue
the sadies – northern passages
chicano batman – freedom is free
dan auerbach – waiting on a song (other than a couple BK songs, I've never heard a thing)
**Sarah Shook would be on this list but it was released a couple years ago and made my list then.***
