Supergroup Alert: Courtney Barnett + Kurt Vile

Post by Clams »

Moppy hair and guitars. Not to mention "Kurt and Courtney" confusion. Awesome.

An album on the way and a fall theater tour with their band the Sea Lice (consisting of members of Sleater-Kinney, Warpaint and Kurt Vile's Violators).

I didn't see this one coming but have to think this will be a fall highlight, it's right up my alley.

Btw there is a spotify presale going on right now and the code is sealice which helped get me some excellent tix for their Philly show.

Really looking forward to this one

I'm hesitant.
Kurt's last record sucked and the one before it wasn't great either IMO.
Courtney, however, rules really hard. I'm hopeful that her influence will make this a worthwhile listen.

Agree with Smitty on this one. What's the & Family record? I thought B'lieve I'm Goin Down was his last one.

according to Discogs, it was a CDR of some random songs and appearances.

i think his records have been pretty solid throughout. "Pretty Pimpin'" got a lot of airplay and deservedly so. it's certainly one of his finest songs.

edit - btw, warhen, if you wanna drop a sendspace link via PMs, i don't tihnk anyone would object.

No.
Smoke Ring was his last good record. Childish Prodigy is the peak.
I hope Courtney lights a fire under him.

WarHen, what do you think Kurt's 5 best songs are?

Tough one, but I've always dug He's Alright (prob my favorite), Runner Ups, Freak Train, Monkey, In My Time (maybe his best song), Baby's Arms.
I also saw him like 3 times during the Childish Prodigy > Smoke Ring era in some pretty small clubs and as an opener for some other bands (maybe Deerhunter? Can't remember exactly), so that adds to the bias toward these records.
But I dunno his music is almost TOO slacker at this point. Like it comes across as lazy now. Last time I saw him live was a similar experience too, so I dunno I just think maybe that star burned too bright, too quick for me and he's just lost his luster.
I heard that song he sang with what's-her-face from Mazzy Star that came out last year. She sounded really great, then Kurt came in and sounded awful and I had to turn it off.

:o :o :o I must disagree. Wakin' on a Pretty Daze is a fantastic album.

That being said, Kurt Vile is probably the most boring performer I've ever seen live.

Has anyone caught a show? Any good? Was there an opener?

Seeing it on Monday but disappointed to see only 15 songs in the set.

I was disappointed by the record. Will admit am a way bigger fan of Courtney than Kurt. There were only about 2 songs I actually liked.

I think the album is fine. I sold my tickets for tomorrow night's show to a friend. I guess I was hoping for a few more songs in their setlists from their solo catalogs. After looking at the setlists it doesn't appear to be the case. I've seen Kurt Vile before and he is really cool. I've always wanted to see Courtney live and a show without her playing a raucous Pedestrian at Best is like having sex with a condom. Good, but leaving me wishing for something more substantial.

I’m in for next Friday night with my son at the Tower Theater in Upper Darby, PA (hometown show for Kurt!). I’d categorize the record as lazy day slacker music. And while it may not be a masterpiece I do think it’s pretty good - I’ll give it 3.5 clams out of 5. As for the 15 song set, that’s fine with me - some songs off the new record, each of them playing some of their solo stuff, plus a few covers – that’s about what I expected. Plus I’d bet that some of those 15 songs will be stretched out pretty good. Looking forward to it!

I’d agree with the 3.5/5 star rating. Listening to it almost feels like a weird, indie rock version of Kanye West and Jay-Z’s Watch the Throne collab. By no means a technical masterpiece, but two artists at the top of their games coming together to bounce sounds off each other.
Turn it up to 10 and rip off the knob

Yep. To my ears it sounds like Barnett lyrics and Vile music (both good things!).

Going tomorrow night in Chicago -- an e-mail today from the venue indicates it will be a 90 minute set. Looking forward to the show -- saw Courtney a couple of years ago and it was one of my favorite shows of the year. As for Kurt Vile, we shall see, agree with the slacker comments above but I'm prepared to be won over.

Yeah, I think my comment out as more of a negative than I intended. Just looking for some DBT-style energy during the set, but this is probably not going to be the show for that.

Last night at the Tower Theater. Sold out, hometown show for Kurt, and 30th birthday party for Courtney complete with Happy Birthday to You, balloons and falling confetti. The songs from their new record were good but the highlights were the older songs, truth is they could have played just Depreston and Pretty Pimpin and I would've left happy. Was mildly surprised that Kurt was the more animated and chatty of the two, he also did most of the heavy lifting on guitar. I thought Stella the drummer (from Warpaint) was fantastic. Had my son along as my wing man and we topped off the evening with late night cheesesteaks on the way home. Fun show, good time.

The album didn't really do much for me, so I went with no expectations. The Tower is a perfect venue for a laid-back night of rock and roll and they delivered. I was glad to see Kurt only pull out the acoustic on a handful of songs. Good show.
