Bruce Springsteen has terrible dreams
The boss has awful dreams. I noticed this the other day. My Father's House, Downbound Train, Point Blank, One Step Up. They all have terrible dreams.
If you don't run you rust

But if his thought-dreams could be seen, would they put his head in a guillotine? And does he dream things he can't keep inside? (Probably yes, certainly yes.)Clams wrote:The boss has awful dreams. Re: Bruce Springsteen has terrible dreams
my dreams are typically insane, phantasmagorical, frightening "horror movies" of persecution and terrible things happening to me. My dreams make Hieronymus Bosch's work look like Dr. Seuss. If my dreams could be filmed the movies would make millions...................and frighten millions as well
However, in most timely fashion, last night I dreamed I was in DBT. Me and Roseanne Cash were singing backing vocals to Outfit. And, if I remember correctly, Phil Lesh was playing bass. Jason fucked up the lyrics really badly, so he demanded that I take over, insisting that I could do better.
I did not do better, but that didn't keep me and Cooley from drinking a bunch of beer. So I had that going for me, which was nice

Re: Bruce Springsteen has terrible dreams
Once I dreamed we were together again
Baby you and me
Back home in those old clubs the way we used to be
We were standin' at the bar
It was hard to hear
The band was playin' loud and you were shoutin' somethin' in my ear
You pulled my jacket off and as the drummer counted four
You grabbed my hand and pulled me out on the floor
You just stood there and held me, then you started dancin' slow
And as I pulled you tighter I swore I'd never let you go
Well I saw you last night down on the avenue
Your face was in the shadows but I knew that it was you
You were standin' in the doorway out of the rain
You didn't answer when I called out your name
You just turned, and then you looked away
Like just another stranger waitin' to get blown away
Point blank
Right between the eyes
Oh, point blank
If you don't run you rust
Re: Bruce Springsteen has terrible dreams
Last night I dreamed that I was a child
Out where the pines grow wild and tall
I was trying to make it home through the forest
Before the darkness falls
I heard the wind rustling through the trees
And ghostly voices rose from the fields
I ran with my heart pounding down that broken path
With the devil snapping at my heels
I broke through the trees and there in the night
My father's house stood shining hard and bright
The branches and brambles tore my clothes and scratched my arms
But I ran till I fell shaking in his arms
I awoke and I imagined the hard things that pulled us apart
Will never again, sir, tear us from each other's hearts
I got dressed and to that house I did ride
From out on the road I could see its windows shining in light
I walked up the steps and stood on the porch
A woman I didn't recognize came and spoke to me through a chained door
I told her my story and who I'd come for
She said "I'm sorry son but no one by that name lives here anymore"
My father's house shines hard and bright
It stands like a beacon calling me in the night
Calling and calling so cold and alone
Shining 'cross this dark highway where our sins lie unatoned
If you don't run you rust
Re: Bruce Springsteen has terrible dreams
Last night I heard your voice
You were crying, crying, you were so alone
You said your love had never died
You were waiting for me at home
Put on my jacket, I ran through the woods
I ran till I thought my chest would explode
There in the clearing, beyond the highway
In the moonlight, our wedding house shone
I rushed through the yard
I burst through the front door, my head pounding hard
Up the stairs I climbed
The room was dark, our bed was empty
Then I heard that long whistle whine
And I dropped to my knees, hung my head and cried
If you don't run you rust
Re: Bruce Springsteen has terrible dreams
BTW, WTF was he thinking when he shelved this version for the one on the record?Last night I dreamed I made the call
I swore to return to stay forevermore
Once again we stood on the wedding steps at Victory Hall
And walked arm in arm through the chapel door
I can remember how good I felt inside
When the preacher said "Son you may kiss the bride"
But as I leaned over to touch her pretty lips
I felt it all slip away through my fingertips
And I'm driving a stolen car through a pitch-black night
I keep telling myself everything's gonna be alright
But I ride by night and I travel in fear
No matter what I do or where I drive
Nobody ever sees me when I ride by

Re: Bruce Springsteen has terrible dreams
There's worse than dreams in Springsteen's songs. There is a dream in here, but not a dream dream, a waking dream:
The runway rushed up at him as he felt the wheels touch down
He stood out on the blacktop and took a taxi into town
He got out down on Main Street and went into a local bar
He bought a drink and found a seat in a corner off the dark
Well she called up her mama to make sure the kids were out of the house
She checked herself out in the dining room mirror and undid an extra button on her blouse
He felt her lying next to him, the clock said 4:00 am
He was staring at the ceiling, he couldn't move his hands
Oh mama mama mama come quick
I've got the shakes and I'm gonna be sick
Throw your arms around me in the cold dark night
Hey now mama don't shut out the light
Don't you shut out the light
Don't you shut out the light
Don't you shut out the light
Don't you shut out the light
Well on his porch they stretched a banner that said "Johnny Welcome Home"
Bobby pulled his Ford out of the garage and they polished up the chrome
His mama said "Johnny oh Johnny, I'm so glad to have you back with me"
His pa said he was sure they'd give him his job back down at the factory
Oh mama mama mama come quick
I've got the shakes and I'm gonna be sick
Throw your arms around me in the cold dark night
Hey now mama don't shut out the light
Don't you shut out the light
Don't you shut out the light
Don't you shut out the light
Don't you shut out the light
Well deep in a dark forest, a forest filled with rain
Beyond a stretch of Maryland pines there's a river without a name
In the cold black water Johnson Lanier stands
He stares across the lights of the city and dreams of where he's been
Oh mama mama mama come quick
I've got the shakes and I'm gonna be sick
Throw your arms around me in the cold dark night
Hey now mama don't shut out the light
Don't you shut out the light
Don't you shut out the light
Don't you shut out the light
Don't you shut out the light

Neil's dreams are melancholic
one of my favorite songs, slays me every time

Prairie Wind is the last Neil record I love from start to finish (well almost, could do without When God Made Me). Heart of Gold is a great concert film as well.whatwouldcooleydo? wrote:Neil's dreams are melancholic

"Its a Dream", " The Painter" (goddamn what beautiful pedal steel by Ben Keith on that one), "Falling off the Face of the Earth"... just a great record.

Neil is one of my all-time favorite artists, top 2 or 3, but post Prairie Wind, other than Greendale, the only thing coming close to "a mostly completely good" album was Psychedelic Pill. Parts of Chrome Dreams 2 were good, but those were mostly older songs (I do love Spirit Road and No Hidden Path, which were new songs at the time). During this period, he's also released some of my absolutely least favorite Neil albums, total garbage like Fork in the Road, Storytone, Monsanto Years, and Peace Trail (more like Shit Trail ) American and Letter Home were decent, way better than the albums of original material that came after
